With the sand knolls constantly moving, this year as usual the buoys have been re-positioned to accommodate the changes. This is a transit out of the River Deben in Suffolk on a rising tide about 3 1/2 hours before high water. The shallowest section is invariably at the last part, the bar, and we really don't want to hit it. But we often want to get out of the river as early as possible.

    Hi... got to do this trip in a few weeks, I draw 0.9m, going to come in on a rising tide of a couple of hours to drop a boat off up the river, any advice ?🙏

    • @johnranson4696
      @johnranson4696 4 місяці тому

      Hi Trojan, it is still the same with plenty of depth if you keep to the buoys on a rising tide. Two hours before HW will be OK but I have sailed over at mid (rising) tide drawing 1.6m in calm conditions. I don't cross back on a falling tide more than one hour after HW although I know many who do. When coming in to the Deben don't turn to starboard immediately after the last red buoy, wait until you are in mid river.

      @@johnranson4696 just FYI, I followed a fishing boat in at low tide on a neap with 1m of water. With my draw of 0.9m at the lowest point which was near the last red bouy heading NW I still had 0.7m below me.

    We owned Starlight 39 hull 39 (Diamond Blue) for about 12 years and it was fantastic. You could not feel safer in any boat than a starlight. The only downside was the small water and fuel tanks which reflect the age iIf it’s design.

    Many, many thanks for posting this. I’ve been following the thread on the PBO forum and that’s where I found the link to your video. I’m new to the Deben and have a Leisure 17sl bilge keeler that draws about 18”, it’s fitted with a Mariner 5 hp outboard. I keep it at Waldringfield and have to say that the thought of ‘crossing the bar’ has caused me a great amount of angst.. but seeing this video it has eased my mind completely, what I thought was going to be a boiling maelstrom turned out be be quite benign…. but I’m sure there are days that it will catch you out! Is there a reason why you went at half flood? I’m absolutely no expert but I would have thought nearer high tide would have given more depth and less of a flood tide to battle against? I’d be really interested in your thoughts on my little boat and 5hp against this….. also thinking about the Alde bar for the future……. that is If I ever get past this one 😉 Many thanks once again. R

    • @johnranson4696
      @johnranson4696 2 роки тому

      Thanks R, it's nothing to be frightened about in the right conditions. We left at half tide as that was about the earliest we could get out with about 0.5m clearance below the keel and have a decent sail before the ebb set in. With a draught of 0.5 m you could leave even earlier to get back in the Deben to take the flood tide back to Waldringfield.

    Nice video, made me smile and brought a little tear to my eye. Walton Backwaters were the playground of my youth in the late sixties and where I learnt to sail. I was sailing my Drascombe Dabber there last year but this year it will be a Westerly Konsort we've just bought. Just have to sail her up from Chichester to Titchmarsh. Superb drone shot and now I know what the entrance to the marina is like. Back to Walton again after 50 odd years! See you on the water ☺️.
