The story goes Bob saw Scarlett walking down the street with her violin in New York City and asked her if she wanted to play on the album .Talk about being in the right place at the right time !

I have never understood this bizarre mentality where it’s only ok to like and/or praise post-‘65 Beach Boys, and act as if everything they did before that doesn’t matter, or to relegate it to the status of “fake yuppie music” or whatever. Sure, the early surf-cars-girls stuff was all about establishing a brand, with a certain ‘California as white suburban teenage Utopia’ kind of image, but that doesn’t change the fact that some really truly _great_ songs came out of it. “Surfer Girl”, “In My Room”, “Don’t Worry Baby”, “I Get Around”, “Let Him Run Wild”, “Help Me Rhonda”… I could go on at length name-checking so many early Beach Boys songs, but the main point is that there are plenty of us that love (almost) every phase/era of The Beach Boys. My own personal favorite era is the ‘65-‘67 Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations, SMiLE period, but I can easily pull lots of diamonds from what came before, as well as after. When a band has been around as long as the Beach Boys have, they’re going to go through a *LOT* of different stages and phases of evolution. I mean yeah, there’s more than a few albums that I felt were real stinkers. Mainly the ones where Brian was either completely absent or had minimal input, and Mike Love took over the wheel. No need to drop names. Even if you’re just a casual fan I’m sure you probably know which albums I’m referring to. Point is, limiting your tastes to timeframes is pointless and self-defeating. If you dig deep and listen to more than just the ‘greatest hits’ stuff from _any_ era… and I mean with open ears and open mind… you’ll be surprised at what you might like. However, if you’re one of these people who has to impose all these rules on yourself because some hipster dipwad told you that’s the only way to listen to music, then I pity you. You’re missing out on a lot of really great stuff. Having said all that, my personal opinion of the Surf’s Up album is that it’s brilliant. Along with its’ immediate predecessor, “Sunflower”, the best album they made in the 70’s… even if the title track that closes out the album was actually recorded in 1966.

There is a video out there called "Adrianne Lenker alternative guitar tunings" She runs through several tunings. Then she finds the tuning used in Mythological Beauty, and starts singing it too. I recall tearing up at that part.

I loved your commentary on this wonderful song. It is a great critique. I remembered the song after hearing it many times 30 or 40 years ago, but I couldn't remember the title. I had to look through every Dylan album to finally find the title again. I'm surprised there are so few videos about this wonderful song.

I agree that student demonstration time does not really fit on the album at all but I wouldn't say it sucks, thats a bit far. Its the black sheep of the album but its a fun little blues rocker, feels like a throwback to some of the 12 bar blues songs that inspired the group. All that being said I wish it was replaced with something more appropriate, I'd love to live in a world where this song and Deirdre from sunflower swapped places.

It may be your favorite album because you are too young to remember the Beach Boys of 1962 through 66. They were putting out one double sided hit after another and it was the era of BB mania. The truth is the band was never the same post 66. Their next big single Heroes and Villains was a dud and they pulled out of Monterey Pop. All down hill until Endless Summer of 74 ...a greatest hits record.

This is my favorite Beach Boys album too, And one of my favorite albums of all time. Don't Go Near the Water is (as of writing this) my favorite beach boys song of all time. I love how gloomy it is but also how it has the old fashioned beach boys mixed with it too, talking about saving the water and stuff like that. Long Promised Road and Take a Load off your Feet are also amazing and catchy songs. And Disney girls is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. And although Student Demonstration Tume is definitely the low point of the album, I don't find it to be that bad. A Day in the Life of a Tree is a literal masterpiece and has all of these metaphors about the Beach Boys decline. Surfs up and Til I Die are also great. And all of this is without mentioning the amazing album cover which I currently have as my pfp on other platforms. And another thing that a lot of people don't talk about is the title, Surfs Up. A lot of people talk about how ironic it is that more of a dark album has a more lighthearted name. But what I think the Beach Boys meant by Surfs Up, is the same thing people mean when they say "Times Up", as in its over. Like the Surfing era of the Beach Boys is over. Amazing Album

I always felt that when the tiny man bit the soldier's ear it was a playful bit of hanky panky. It made the song even spicier for me. Are you sure the tiny man was attacking? It could be that it's ironic how those two managed to find pleasure. Good talk though!

Dear Bread and Water, I ADORE the Beach Boys and I've always felt 1968 - 1974 were their best. WHY? Because they matured and used their problems and challenges as inspiration, resulting in Dennis, Carl, Mike and even Bruce producing gems. Dennis and Carl in particular came out of the shadow of Brian. Dennis proved he was, in some ways, stronger in certain areas of music. And Carl, reflected his thoughtful and calm sea mindset. But, I had NEVER thought of "Surf's Up" in the way you described it. You're right. The irony? That same hey day they had said goodbye to and resulted in their best work, would come back and become both a commercial gold mine but also ruin their creative progress. It breaks my heart that they became a golden oldies band. I can understand PERFECTLY why Dennis and Carl were so unhappy. Here they were growing as a band and individuals.... yet now Mike wanted to stick to the safe easy money? And then there's the solo career Dennis could've had. I agree with Al when he said that if Dennis had cleaned up his act - he could've been a huge star in his own right. The Beach Boys was always a story of many contradictions. A influential Father who was very abusive BUT, at the same time, responsible for the same discipline and never give up mindset which would be so useful in hard times. A Mozart band leader who gave them their greatest highs but was, at times, a huge disadvantage. A strong family bond, which would hold them together at the same time as being the very thing which threatened to tear them apart. The Beach Boys were like the heavenly beaches and surf. But, also could become a huge storm. David

As an American band why would The Beach Boys not be qualified to make an album with anti Authoratirarian and anti Establishment themes? That's the job of musicians and songwtiters after all. I think they did the best they could. It's definately one of my favourite albums from the early 1970s..I dont believe a music critic can have a faultless or inside opinión of what the band/writers were trying to achieve..

i think you've totally got the wrong end of the stick vis a vis surf's up - for one, you don't know about SMiLE, which is a pretty significant part of the story of the song. As well, the idea that the lyrics in the song are very brian is also totally wrong. Brian wasn''t a lyricist. the lyricist for surf's up was Van Dyke Parks, and he was/is famous for being very poetic and arguably pretentious etc. I'm not going to go to like literary analysis levels but it absolutely fits the theme of the album - a man is performing, is disillusioned by the fakeness of the opera, goes outside and listens to the laughs that "come hard" as a year passes (people get miserable as they get older) and resolves to turn into himself, into the children's song, the innocence he once had etc.

THank you for this video. I have been obsessing over this album for the last few weeks- mainly the 2nd half. I appreciate your insight into these songs. But I have to admit I was let down with your comments (or lack there-of) of Surfs Up. That song has been the focal point of my obsession. I believe it to be profound. I find it to be about deconstructionism. For Brian, probably about his band and success. For me it is hitting home with the unravelling of our America and to a degree my faith in the traditional western Church and god. I relate to the character in the song. Anyway. Thank you.

Surf’s up is absolutely fantastic. It still sounds like the familiar “surfin safari” or “Kokomo” Beach Boys most people know, but is warped into a more mature and jaded version of those times. Definitely tied with Pet Sounds as my favorite BB album.

🤔 is 50 yrs really that long though? I mean ww2 was 80 yrs ago and though dwindling we still have some veterans. Even ww1 veterans were still around in some numbers until about the early 2000's even a few in the 2010's. I guess in the realm of history it doesn't seem like that big a disconnect for me.

This analysis makes it pretty certain that Levy was chiefly responsible for this song, and this could be the reason Dylan doesn't include it in his concerts. It's a very good song but lacks the moral or emotional focus of the best Dylan songs.

I've heard the Beach boys most of my life I was born in 1958 and was always interested in the Beatles... About 2010 I finally got burned out on the Beatles and all they were doing was rewrapping the same crap so I drove deeper into the Beach boys and man they did not disappoint! The cars in the surfing we're just fine when you hear the warmth of the Sun or Caroline no,don't worry baby. No wonder the Beatles got shook.
