This channel evolved from a mix of many things into a design channel filled mostly with tutorials about Rhino 3d, Blender, Grasshopper3d, Software-driven environmental analysis, 3D Printing and more.
This Channel is an opportunity to connect with other link-minded people to discuss software, methods, design philosophies and any other topic related. The tutorials which try to focus on the logic behind them are here to start the conversation. Since I'm a Landscape Designer during daytime, Landscape, Urban design and related topics will appear here too.
I'm usually uploading every Thursday if possible but a least once a week. To keep things tidier I decided to split off my beloved music and other unrelated topics to another channel, which I will call Philipp Galvan. From now on this Channel will be called Philipp Galvan Design.

Ladybug Tut. #24 - Rhino sun with Ladybug and More
Philipp continues the Ladybug Tools course in this tutorial, covering advanced sunlight and shadow analysis tools in Rhino and Grasshopper. Here’s a breakdown of the key topics:
Reintroduction of Legacy Tools: Tools like "Set Rhino Sunlight" and "Surface Ray Tracing" have been resurrected in the latest versions of Ladybug Tools (1.8+). These tools allow precise control and animation of sunlight within Rhino, enabling users to simulate sunlight by minutes, hours, and even years.
Surface Ray Tracing: This tool tracks how sun rays hit and bounce off a 3D model, useful for analyzing potential lensing effects and solar impacts on design.
Solar Envelope Tool: Determines how obstacles (e.g., buildings) cast shadows and block sunlight. It helps architects understand where to build without infringing on solar access rights.
Sky Mask Tool: Visualizes the percentage of visible sky from a given point in the project, allowing for optimal sunlight exposure.
Practical Tips: The video covers essential settings in Rhino, such as adjusting sunlight quality and shadow sharpness, controlling lighting in viewports, and animating sliders in Grasshopper for dynamic sun studies.
Upcoming Tools: The creator hints at exploring "Shade Benefit" and "Thermal Shade Benefit" in future videos, focusing on optimizing output visualization.

Hello Philip, thank you so much for the explanations. I had run into issues a few times, but now I was able to install it easily
Hello Philipp! I’m working on energy performance optimization using simulations. I’m currently trying to implement the Sobol sampling method in Grasshopper to study different design parameters. I’m facing challenges with running simulations for each sample and saving the results properly. I’d really appreciate any advice or guidance you could offer on this process. Thank you!
How install in Rhino 8?
Thanks a lot broski <3

Hello and thank you for these tutorials, I got this error at ''loadporbsvalue'' ''C:\Users\username\butterfly\ Failed to find probes folder windtunnel\postProcessing\probes do you have any suggestions? Thank you

@@PhilippGalvanDesign yes like your video, but I didn't wait for the calculation as it took so long and it was running and running and I didn't know when will it finish.
Is there any cyclone simulation
Not that I know at least not in Butterfly. What you like to analyze?
@@PhilippGalvanDesignwind flow
@@PhilippGalvanDesign yes
Butterfly can only analyze one wind direction at a time... Although you could more than one inflow but that would not simulate a cyclone. Butterfly works like a physical wind tunnel. Maybe you need to modify your question. Instead of wanting to simulate a cyclone which is pretty unpredictable maybe think of what problem you want to solve first.
Hi, it was a really helpful vide as always. Have you ever got error in annual daylight that Radiance fails to load one of the files when calculating the direct sunlight. I'm having it and couldn't figure out

Hi Phillip, on Rhinolands there r two options to purchase: Rhinoland or Lands Design. which out of the two you are using? Thanks, Oded
I use Landsdesign. Rhinolands is basically a combo. Rhino + Landsdesign. In case you don't have Rhino you could go for that option. it doesn't have more functionality...
What are the benefits of memberships
No specific benefits. It's for me to survive as a channel and I will prioritise members questions and suggestions.

Did you follow the installation properly. Which version of bluecore CFD did you install? Did you follow the steps to setup the bluecore CFD environment. And are you running Rhino in admin mode?
Hi Philipp. Thank you very much! I've a problem. I created my energy model, and inserted brise-soleil (sunshade) with the "HB Louver Shades" node, as you taught. But when analyzing the building with and without brise-soleil, the result of the operative temperature in the "HB Read Room Comfort Result" node is the same, as if the brise-soleil had no effect, do you know what that could be?
I'm not sure I haven't looked into HB for a while. I'll check it out when I get to. Is the the 'HB read room comfort result's part of HB radiance or HB energy? Also is your shading inside or outside the glancing line?
Hi there, why would my heatmap be giving me in the inverse of color. Where hot areas should be using a shade canopy it provides less hot areas and where less hot areas should be (under the shade) it is bright red...
You might need to check if your surface is not upside down. Or you maybe have a different colour legend code. What is the temperature under the canopy and what is it next to it? Are your canopies solids? Which climate are you testing? (Which geographic location) Which time of the day are you testing?
@@PhilippGalvanDesign Turns out I was testing for 7 pm in a climate where the sun had set, so this would makes sense. Is there a way for calculating WBGT as opposed to UTCI?
Hi! In order to analyse ground surfaces I have to extrude them into solids?
No you don't need to extrude them into solids. Except if you use Honeybee.
and URBANopt CLI? is not necessary?
@@nanox4520 Not necessary except you want to run Dragonfly models through E-Plus... I never used it as it is very specific.
hi many thanks for the video! I was wondering if I can use the hb utci confort map component to make an estimation for temperature levels and so efficiencies of the PV panels that are located at a certain level?
The comfort map is the perceived temperature. But for PV panels the most important aspect is the exposure to the sun. Not the temperature. But you should be able to calculate a heat map just from the surface temperature only. It's an interesting topic.i might make a video.on this.
Hi Philipp, When I run the Direct SunHours component, I seem to get an extra timestep. For example, if I am analysing 1hr with 6 timesteps (every 10mins), I seem to get results greater than 1hour (e.g. 1.16hrs of sunlight between 12pm-1pm). Do you know why this is the case?
I am wondering if you need a 10 minute interval for a Sun Hour study. The idea is to calculate hours together. Except you want to animate the Sun exposure over time. However I think the reason why you get a seventh step has something to do with the way how ladybug calculates this. It adds values for points in time. So for example. The first value is captured at 12:OO then 12:10, 12:20, 12:30, 12:40, 12:50. (6 values) Now because you define the hour as 12:00 to 1:00 you get a seventh value at 1:00. This value supposed to be part of the next hour. 1:00, 1:10 1:20 etc... Now again I don't see much reason why I would calculate an hour in 10 minute interval if I can just calculate 1 hour with an hour interval... You get the same result...
thing is i followed same procedure but my structure is highrise structure with detail wall and multiple floors which i combined and made a bloock and group of that so when i select in brep its not getting selected as well there is error ? i am not able to send you picture of that on youtube chats will you please help me on that ? please send me mail id so i can send you the actual doubts and question regarding shadow as well wind analysis ????
office@nedomlel.com
Hi! Is there a way to adjust the albedo/reflectivity of the material and obtain the value of mean radiant temperature to see the impact and relation?
In theory I should be possible but I haven't tried that myself. I am quite busy these days. But if I come across it I'll try
i have doubts regarding installation of cfd .. it didnt work on my pc after following same procedure and thz video is 3 years old maybe not working on new rhino.. so please upload trying new version of rhino and grasshopper using same procedure .
Which version of rhino are you using. And which blue core CFD version did you install?
@@PhilippGalvanDesign same version 2017 bluecfd and rhino 7
Are you running Rhino in admin mode?
And did you create the CFD environment?
@@PhilippGalvanDesign how can i check thz ?
This is very useful particularly how can we use ,it in the design and extract more from it.
Is this a question?
can you also include 5 minutes ,how we can get benefits of these data.
Yes good idea, I will do a follow up video at some point to explain use cases.
Hello Philipp, Thank you a lot for your videos. Great work! I have two questions. 1- Don't you need to also limit the simulation period for the data of the fract. solar exposure? 2- How can we average data for each point on the grid and plot one hourly chart for UTCI? I can only plot a chart for each point on the grid.
Question 1: The human to sky relationship doesn't require weather data information. It's the relationship between location and objects. No sun movement. Result is one number per point. Question 2: you need to average the list of values per point to get an average number per point. Then you need to flatten the resulting list to get a single list with one value per point. Not a list of lists with one value....
@@PhilippGalvanDesign Thank you a lot for your reply.
Hi Philip, Thank you for this video, I have a question, how UCTI component has accepted the wind speed that has different length than the temperature and the relative humidity? Should not be the same size? Logically, you should take the probe points of the velocity and put it in the point of human to sky so that every probe point has utci and velocity, no?
Yes I'm using the probe points as my points for the human to sky relationship component... In the UTCI component I input the windspeed resulting from Butterfly. Not sure if I can follow your questions correctly.
Hello Philipp, your videos are great, thank you very much. I followed every step and I think I got a good result but I'm not sure about the accuracy. I also indicated the north direction but there is equal amount of light coming from all directions. When I do the Lady Bug solar analysis on the same location, I see that there is a significant difference between north and south. There should be very little light coming from the north but in the daylight analysis it is the same from all directions. Why do you think this happens? Thanks a lot again
Daylight is different from Sunlight. With Solar analysis you can calculate the direct sun hours which doesn't include the skylight. Only direct light. Have you tried the solar radiation study in Ladybug or the Sun Hour study?
@@PhilippGalvanDesign Thank you so much for your answer. I did solar radiation in Lady Bug
amazing! is there a way to bake the sun range of a specific period as a shape? so as to mark an outline where the sun hits throughout that period?
You might want to look at the Sun envelope in the new Ladybug 1.8. that might be able to do that.
Or at least help to get there.

Ok you don't need to download the weather data. You can just place the URL of the weather data in a panel. Ladybug will do the rest for you... Now if you got an error on your weather data then it might be corrupt. Some weather data files are empty I realized. If the size is very small it might be empty. Have you tried a different one?
Dear Philipp, Thank you for your response. I re-watched the tutorial carefully and managed to input everything correctly. However, I am unable to see the desired results because the software freezes every time I connect my surfaces via brep. I also realized that the Radiance file is missing.
