The Anime Baka Club
Приєднався 23 сер 2016
Baka! Baka! Baka! is a channel dedicated to reviewing and over analyzing anime in a "book club" format. Troy, Jeremy and Jason will choose an anime to discuss, pour over, and ultimately give 1-5 Baka!'s, 5 being the best. We touch on characters, story arches, main plots and our personal feelings about the anime as a whole.
A new anime will be chosen every 2 weeks and subsequently reviewed 2 weeks later. We want to announce the anime, then give our viewers and listeners a chance to watch said anime, then join in the discussion. We would love to hear your thoughts and feelings on anything we said, or maybe something we missed.
Also, if you have a suggestion for an anime you would love to see reviewed, let us know!

Have you guys considered watching Arcane?
Will you guys discuss Vinland Saga season 2 at some point. Would love to hear your thoughts on it
We generally have a rule that no anime gets more then two podcast episodes. But we have used mini episodes to discuss some specific series that really grab us. I’m hoping to do Vinland Saga S2 some day.
I think the term you might be looking for is "Pocket Dimension". pocket dimensions are considered too small or too accessible to be considered a complete alternate dimension. They're just a extra "pocket" of space attached to the world. This is what I personally believe the Golden Kingdom of episodes 21&22 to be
Billy’s reason is actually really interesting- its just elaborated on later
Also when billy uses undead it heals his blindness
Wow that makes perfect sense and I didn’t even notice it. I even am current on the manga now. Awesome! -Troy
Another banger episode as always. Jeremy, you good? You need a headpat man?
I really enjoyed this session, it was insightful and at the same time funny. Excited to listen to the next part!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Been waiting for this! I haven’t been keeping up with a lot of animes today, usually starting a few and just falling off due to life and time constraints. However, after the first four episodes (I think the show originally aired them altogether), I could not stop. As Troy & Jason stated, the music really made those emotional scenes hit so much harder. Some of the animation and framing of shots in the anime were already beautiful, and the music only further enhanced them. The flashbacks, details, and callbacks to earlier scenes really made this show stand out for me, easily being one of my favorites. As you guys also discussed, sensible characters that don’t drag the plot, keeping the story going. Regarding Jeremy’s points, the show is definitely slower paced and I can see how some may see it as boring, if the character moments and each episode’s mini “arc” isn’t resonating with the viewer. Every time I started up an episode, I wouldn’t feel excited in the same sense as watching something like Chainsaw Man, but I expected to be ready to experience a combination of wholesome, bittersweet, and overall pleasant vibes. I feel that while the action scenes are few and far between, they are really well done though. I am extremely curious to see how Jeremy will feel about the second half as I think it may be more of what he’s looking for (at least compared to the first cour). Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on episodes 15-28!
As always, I enjoy the podcast, even when Jeremy is wrong. Kidding, kidding. Believe it or not you’re not the only podcaster I’ve heard that didn’t vibe with Frieren. However, you referred to it as shoujo, but I believe you mean slice of life. Insert simpsons meme here. Shoujo can be slice of life, but there are action / fantasy shoujo like Yona of the Dawn, horror shoujo like Trinity Blood, etc. And to your point about how small the time period was; I’m in the same age group of as you guys, and I remember a conversation I had with someone while walking home from work from at Taco Bell when I was 16. It impacted me, and it was someone I only saw one other time in my life after that night. So roughly 2 hours of my life. Regarding the Stark comment about the demon not hitting as hard, I took it as because the demon doesn’t hit as hard, he can leave himself open to get hit while taking her out. So he takes damage, but not fatal, whereas if he was fighting his master he would just die. Appreciate you guys, look forward to your thoughts on the second half.
Great show!
Thank you!
Oh yeah. This is where the fun begins.
Good times were had!
@@TheAnimeBakaClub as to your confusion of the attire of the male yakuza manager/boss of the cafe. I think i might have an idea. I believe his outfit is a joke upon the cliche attire worn by otaku's and maid cafe otakus in other animes. The 2 rolled up posters in his backpack ive definetly seen before in other anime. Just my 2 cents.
Another lovely discussion boys. I look forward your many hot, cold, and room-temp takes on Season 2 one day. As for the listener's choice episode, I would love to cast my vote for "Violet Evergarden" if I would be so bold. Keep up the great work gentlemen.
So sorry for the late reply! I missed this one. But check out Episode 49! We very much enjoyed discussing that one!
@@TheAnimeBakaClub can't believe i missed that one! Will do.
My vote goes to Heavenly Delusions (Tengoku Daimakyo) for a 13 episode, or the first core of Frieren (as the previous post said ~14 episodes). Both are amazing.
Great suggestions but both are already on a short list of anime we’d like to watch in February, since they both are very recent. Do you have any older anime you’d like to see us discuss?
As far as anime suggestions go, I’m still voting for Frieren, which is still airing with 24(?) episodes total. I know you guys said 12/13 episode limit but I highly recommend stopping at 14, which is a good stopping point imo. Otherwise, I’ll throw in two other animes; Black Lagoon (2006) & Jormungand (2012). Both have first seasons of 12/13 episodes and are personally some of the first anime I ever watched. Hoping one of these will make the list but either way, I’ll be curious to see what is picked. Thanks for another podcast as usual! I don’t usually listen to episodes where I haven’t seen the anime but I’ll tune in for the first 10-15 minutes and see what y’all are up to.
Frieren will definitely happen at some point for the regular show, very likely once it completes its second cour. But happy to add the other anime to the list, keep an eye out for our poll to elect the anime that wins!
Hope you guys will check out Frieren: Beyond Journey's End once it's done airing. Fantasy series with a very interesting premise on what happens after the demon king is defeated, focusing on a specific character in the hero party. The first few episodes were absolutely amazing and I couldn't stop watching. Hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving!
Great recommendation! We have been hearing the hype on this one and it’s definitely a high priority. Depending on when it ends, it may take a bit due to our new years schedule where we use three episodes for a movie and two retro anime.
Will you guys do oshi no ko next?
We are actually going to not watch that anime due to personal sensitive subject matter for our hosts. I can’t go into anything more specific then that. However, I watched the first episode and man what a ride. Do you feel the rest of the series holds up? Maybe I can do a minisode or something on it. -Troy
@@TheAnimeBakaClub it had its ups and downs but episode 6 was even better than 1 imo
Haven't started Hell's Paradise yet so I'll save this podcast for later but I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts on The Dangers In My Heart next time haha. Initially saw the anime on MAL and the description seemed really interesting. The anime went in a completely different direction than what I expected from the plot summary but I've been really enjoying it so far (5 episodes deep). Thanks for another podcast episode!
First thing guys thanks for the call out :) I can tell Jason had a fun childhood 😂 I’m joking messing with him, I do wonder if he likes SpongeBob the MVP of comedy, I’m surprised he doesn’t like Looney Tunes I still crack up at the original Looney Tunes. Anyway it’s that fine I actually think Jason just wants a little something more than the random stuff that happens, which is fine he’s not the only person in the world who doesn’t like random comedy, I sometimes don’t when it’s loud or characters basically just yelling the entire show I do find that grating, humor is subjective just like one’s ability to enjoy a movie or show heck there’s some popular Anime’s and TV shows I don’t like not that I hate then I’m just not interested in them but I’m glad that others can enjoy them. I am also glad that even though Jason didn’t like Urusei Yatsura, he didn’t say that Troy or Jeremy were wrong for enjoying it or being a jerk about it, I like he showed respectfulness to the other two while giving his opinions on the show and characters, while he didn’t enjoy it he was pretty cool about it in the podcast, but I do agree with you Troy this is better watched in small doses then binging it, like have another or a few shows your watching and then come back to to Urusei Yatsura for fun, also a little bit of trivia Urusei Yatsura from what I heard translated to those obnoxious space people or something like that which fits the show like a glove lol.
So I don’t know if you guys will see this but I think what Jason’s overall problem is that the 2022 remake is just one joke after another not really letting the viewer breathe and giving jokes one after the other at a fast pace random way (which is the charm of UY) but not to mention the 2022 remake is a little more safer and has more of a kiddie feel to it somewhat than the original 1979 Urusei Yatsura, where the jokes were more set up and gave you time to settle in with the joke, here are some top episodes that fans loved from the original you guys should definitely check them out from the original Anime and see what you guys think. So you want to start with the first two episodes it’s fun to compare the old with new one see what was different and what was the same with the starting episodes, as for the other episodes they’ll be top rated ones Episode 10: Pitter Patter Christmas Eve Episode 91: Document - Who Will Be Miss Tomobiki!? Episode 122: The Fox’s Hard Feelings of Painful Love… Episode 102: Sakura - Melancholy of a Youth Time Episode 44: After You’ve Gone Episode 78: Pitiful! Mother of Love and Banishment!? Episode 163: Goodness! Words Aren’t Getting to Darling Episode 143: Far Spring! Tale of the Lonely Fairy!! Episode 157: I Love Darling’s Kindness… Episode 107: Different Dimension Switch - Where is Darling!?
Thank you for the comment! We actually all took the time to read it and discussed in our pt 2 episode, which should be coming out soon. You’re a part of them team now Skye!
Great podcast guys! After listening to your final points towards the end and thinking about the story some more, I agree with a lot of it. I got into the anime (and manga) for primarily the premise and the comedy but I did end up losing interest shortly after. I did come into this series expecting/hoping(?) for something more akin to Overlord and premise aside, they are vastly different. The Eminence in Shadow definitely has more of a comedic tone that I think sometimes wants the audience to “just roll with it” rather than explain everything. You guys hit on most of the positives that Overlord has in regards to its world building and I absolutely adore the floor guardians and all the other denizens of Nazarick. 100% agree that the rest of Shadow Garden were underdeveloped as I was looking forward to seeing more of their interactions with Cid, or just learning more about them in general. Unfortunately, most of this can be found in some of the chibi manga short stories, if I remember correctly. I do find the jokes funny, and I would say the anime accomplishes that in that aspect. Just not completely what I was looking for. Not sure if Jason’s aware but there is an Overlord movie that is currently in the works and should be taking place in between Seasons 3 & 4, specifically involving Demiurge’s machinations and Nazrick’s interactions with another kingdom that didn’t get much screen time in the anime. Would love to hear his thoughts on it once it releases. Kind of hoping you guys would take another poke at Overlord but totally understandable if Jason’s the only one still interested.
We get more into it for part 2 but at the end of the first season, I just was left thinking of pickles and peanut butter with the story and the comedy. Two things I liked but just don’t belong together. Thank you for the comment! -Troy
Personally, I'm glad Demon Slayer ended. It showed up to the party, kicked ass, didn't overstay its welcome, and left on a high note.
It’s a leader among men. Or anime. You get what I mean.
Eminence in Shadow next!! Woooooooooooo!!!!!!
Ok, you’re gonna have to sell me on the anime because I’m eight episodes in and cringing non-stop. -Troy
@@TheAnimeBakaClub Haha, love it or hate it, I'll be interested in hearing all your thoughts on it next time. I was just finishing Overlord and wanted something similar (overpowered protagonist, loyal minions, and lots of misunderstanding between the MC and crew). I started off reading the manga and found the premise quite funny, with the idea of whatever the MC was making up to fool his followers (and everyone else, for that matter) was actually happening at the same time. Admittedly, I haven't gotten too far with the anime adaptation (only watched the first cour).
:)
Might be kind of random but was revisiting some of your earlier episodes and as a fellow POE player, I do enjoy hearing Jason's thoughts on whatever the current league is at the time haha.
Not like this. Not like this! -Troy IN YOUR FACE TROY!!! - Jason
Great jobs guys! Thanks for another entertaining and enlightening episode.
Thank you!
Yes ye yes. the comic artist and his assistants is soooo funny.

What perfect timing! I just finished watching this one last night.
Woot! Let us know what you thought!
@@TheAnimeBakaClub really enjoyed. Kept watching with the sense of really wanting to learn more of the mystery and different scenarios from other perspectives. Great animation helped too of course.
So happy to see you guys doing this one! It's definitely got a modern classic feel to it.
We have been waiting so long for Disney to make it available! Thanks for listening!
Another great episode as always. Think there is a chance that Bocci the Rock would interest you guys enough to discuss one day?
Absolutely. It will almost certainly be my next pick. I have been waiting a long time for Summertime Rendering but Bocci would be my second choice. So another month or so?
Awesome
To be fair. The claw boss turned himself in at the end of season 2. No one forced him to go to jail. Even serizawa works for Reigen instead of going to jail.
That’s a great point!
@The Anime Baka Club and mob has been knocked out unconscious before even if he is powerful. Like from teru hanazawa in season 1 that's when we 1st saw the ???% that ritsu was afraid of when they were kids. In season 2 when one of the body improvement club members were protecting mob it was because he actually fell asleep. At the end on season 2 he said he noticed he gets more tired when he uses a lot of his power.
Regarding the budget, another UA-camr pointed out Mappa went all in because they are also the production company for this anime. So they stand to make more money. It’s the first time Mappa has done this so it’s a make or break for them.
Oh that’s fascinating. I’ve never been as interested in behind the scenes as when I watched this anime. -Troy
I've always been curious. What are each of the intro's "bakas" from. Im pretty sure the last two are Jotaro and Vegeta. Other than that, I can't recognize them.
Jeremy and myself (Troy) back in the long long ago, just scoured the web for sound clips of anime characters saying “baka”. Besides the two you mention, I think Hetalia is in there. But it was honestly just random. Except Vegeta. He’s the best part of the sound bite and closes it for that reason.
I tried this anime awhile back based solely off the MAL ratings and could not get into it. I did enjoy the OP though, which is by Tommy Heavenly6, one of Tomoko Kawase's bands.
Very cool!
The dub changes what is said in the sub. The John Cena part you talked about is because he was popular during that time. In the sub the mention Antonio Anoki who is a hero in Japanese wrestling. So Dub caters a lot to western pop culture and don't really use most of the Japanese things in the dubs.
Good to know!
1:31:28 - What anime does to people, having no context makes it even better :D
LOL. I complete forgot about pee flute! -Troy
I would to see Gintama part 2 in your podcast
From Jason: We'll have to talk Troy into it :P
If we watched only 12 more episodes, out of all of Gintama, which 12 more would you recommend as "best of Gintama"?
@@TheAnimeBakaClub can I propose 25 instant of 12 episodes ?
I think Gintama is a pretty good comedy, at least in the sub, but it's hard to get into, and I don't think I'd enjoy it in the dub, I doubt it translates well. That being said I stopped watching it 70 episodes in, maybe I'll come back to it one day. The thing I dislike the most about it is that even if you have a decent knowledge on japanese culture, and anime culture in general, you're still going to find many jokes that are references to things you don't know, so you need either subtitles with translator notes explaining the jokes, googling them, or having somebody explain them to you, and that's not the most optimal form of comedy for me. But it feels nice when you actually recognize the reference or understand the wordplay. On the positive note, I really like the silly world, characters and atmosphere of the show, and the contrast of that with moments when the story gets more serious later. Thanks for the shout-out
The dub really did this anime a disservice. The jokes don't translate 1 for 1 and reading jokes in live format rather than on a manga page just hit differently and may not hit at all. That said, it would be very interesting to have Troy and Jeremy rewatch a few later episodes in sub and see if it hits differently.
It's one of those things you have to see . It's also not for kids. You should also watch it with translation . For everyone who finished it, it's in the top 5. however I know it burns slowly But the payment is satisfactory and big. As for you, I know that it is not your type, but I hope that you will see it even if In your spare time or when there is nothing to watch
Picking up Gintama is like trying to start One Piece. You know it's good, but nearly 400 episodes is a daunting task!
The first two episodes are anime fillers to celebrate the animation of the manga, the manga actually starts at episode 3 which is why it feels odd, it was made for the manga readers at the time. Still, Gintama is a very unique comedy that heavily relies in dialogue/characters and some times (not all) on japanese cultural knowledge, so its not unusual that people dont like it. Its so highly rated since the people that do stick with it on their own will are the ones gintama rewards, since they resonate with it The thing about the sword ban is much more spiritual than it is "we cant use these weapons anymore even though guns exists", the sword quite literally represented the soul of a samurai back then so its more of a loss of meaning than a loss of material, even then having swords around advanced weapons works in Gintama because it lives more by the rule-of-cool than a realistic powersystem, characters may do amazing feats and get impossibly hurt but be fine after a while since the author focuses way more on characters than in the world. Also, im curious, how is the format of the show? Is this the only episode about gintama that will be done?
I really appreciate the extra context on the sword ban! That makes much more sense, and like Cyberpunk, we are too familiar with "rule of cool". We have a "2 show rule" with anime so we won't be getting bogged down with 10 podcasts about DBZ or MHA and have room for a wider array of anime. Since we've already watched 12 episodes of Gintama and done a show, we would have room for one more. With that in mind and context of watching the first 12, what would be your suggestion on "the best 12 episodes" to give the best impression and hook us into watching more on our off time?
@@TheAnimeBakaClub Well there isnt really a good way to skip around the series and be able to appreciate the best "stand-alones" episodes since they are built upon previously established jokes, plots, characters arcs/quirks and character dynamics and are amazing because of that, for example, i just went around season 1 (first 50 episodes) and could only find like 5 episodes that have no major elements that come back later (and even some of those have minor callbacks later). The point where gintama "gets good" varies a LOT between people, some start loving it from the start, others once they reach one of six serious arcs before episode 100, others even later, the point is these people see some potential that keeps them going even for so long. Some people say that the best taste of Gintama is the first season (50 eps) and if you dont like it at all by then then its not for you, but i have seen folks hate the first season and love the rest so idk, in my opinion the first 25 episodes are the best taste of gintama, not the best in the series of course, later stuff is infinitely better and you can see how the author improves a lot as time goes on, my point is that by episode 25 you already have a good taste of the "style" of the author and if you dont see potential in it by then and dont like the style itself, then the series may not be for you (PLEASE include episode 25 if yall ever do a second part). At most i can try and guess which episodes some of you wont like in the first 30 or so: 15 (kind of slow), 18 (a lot of panty jokes), 19 (kind of slow), 20 (even i find this one kinda boring), 22 (many sexual and sometimes juvenile jokes), 26 (kind of slow), 30 (A LOT of japanese humor/cultural references, very hard to get through for a lot of people). Even then i recommend continuing up to episode 25 at the very least because the next 13 are good and a big improvement from the first ones in my opinion. If you still want a list of the best standalones i can give it tho. I almost forgot, but i just want to confirm that the dub is not very good (also it only covers the first 50 eps)
Excellent discussion as always gentlemen. Hot take, but this is probably my favorite anime of the year so far. Wait...thats not a hot take at all. Oh well.
On Baka Baka Baka every take is a hot take! Thanks for listening!!! We’re looking forward to cour 2. Is there anything coming down the pipe that you think might surpass Spy x Family?
@@TheAnimeBakaClub Chainsaw Man is the only one I can think of that could possibly dethrone it. Time will tell.
Through the power of friendship, our heroes were able to rise above the challenge and defeat Dog, but were then utterly defeated at the hands of Dog. Will their destinies intertwine in the future? Find out next time, on ELDEN RIIIIIIING!
Will they try finger?
Ichigo smacking the dragon mouth shut was definitely a highlight.
Let’s not compliment Jason’s gameplay too much. He’s already losing control of his ego as it is.
Nice job with killing the invader at the end. Looking forward to seeing you guys fight some of the later bosses (specifically Malenia haha). When do you normally upload a typical anime review on UA-cam (specifically Spy X Family)? I'm still finishing up the first cour myself. Also, do you guys plan on watching Overlord S4 and the movie when it's done airing? Looking forward to hear your thoughts if you do. Thanks for consistently releasing podcasts. You guys definitely deserve more views and subscribers!
We had to delay Spy x Family an extra week due to Troy (me!) taking a vacation. We’re actually recording it tomorrow so should be ready by end of next week. We try for consistency but with jobs and families, podcasting and releases rarely gets top priority. Thank you for watching/listening! No decisions yet on Overlord but we’ll give it some thought! That series always gives us a good discussion.
Baka Baka-Elden Ring Appraise: Good
You guys are killing it! Evangelion...THEN TRIGUN!? Excited
Enjoy the pod as always. Question for Troy; what anime did you start your kids with and at what age? My son is four now and I am easing him into anime with some Ghibli films with the goal of one day watching big series like Eva with him.
That is exactly what I did. Nausica is still my oldests’ favorite anime film to this day. And as they got older it was just natural to include them if something I was watching was age appropriate. Now I ask them what the hot anime buzz is and get their recommendations.
I subscribed.😇
Thank you so much!
Wtf
When I watch our first episode I say the same thing. Also all our episodes. This is honestly the most accurate review of our podcast. But we appreciate you gave us a chance!
I really enjoyed Visions, especially the village bride, which seems to be the most hit or miss in the reviews I’ve seen. Can’t wait for your Eva episode (and hope you cover more of the series in the future).
Love hearing everyone’s favorites and think that’s a great pick for yours!
Keep up the good work guys!
Thank you!
This show was frustrating. The animation was great, I liked the idea, but it feels like it’s missing all the filler episodes that build characters and motivations. I feel like this would have been a really good anime if it had two cores.
