Maryam Riaz in Conversation: Liberation Psychology, Islam, Psychotherapy and Paths to Social Justice
Maryam Riaz is a Muslim BACP-accredited psychotherapist and senior lecturer at Leeds Beckett University. In this interview with Robbie Curtis, she shares her unique experiences navigating the world of psychotherapy training and academia and the relevance of social justice for counselling training and practice, a current Leeds Beckett counselling student.
As the only person of colour during her counselling training and the first person of colour to open a private practice in Bradford city centre, Maryam shares some of her experiences of racism and prejudice, and advocates for all counselling and psychotherapy training providers to embed themes of social justice and societal discrimination into their training programmes. Maryam offers perspective on working within a hospital chaplaincy team in Bradford, where she collaborated to enhance cultural and faith awareness in mental health settings. She brings to light how her foundations in Islamic psychotherapy have shaped her integrative approach, blending spirituality and pastoral care seamlessly into her practice.
The podcast explores the role of liberation psychology in personal and professional growth. Maryam discusses the need for therapists to address internalized oppression and biases, as detailed in her chapter ‘Social Justice Informed Therapy and Racially Minoritised Individuals’, co-authored with Nahid Nasrat, in ‘The Handbook of Social Justice in Psychological Therapies: Power, Politics and Change’ (Sage, 2023). Maryam highlights the challenges and opportunities of working in diverse yet often segregated communities, advocating for systemic change through genuine collaboration and inclusion. In going beyond tokenistic approaches to diversity, Maryam emphasises the necessity of empathy and non-judgmental support in creating a more inclusive therapeutic environment. In academia, Maryam illuminates the importance of merging academic research with community engagement to drive social justice and systemic change.
Maryam shares her insights on how diverse representation in education enriches learning experiences and prepares students for real-world applications. With a focus on social justice, Maryam emphasises the impact of diverse voices in education, and shows how embracing these differences can foster significant personal and professional growth for students.

Thank you Robbie and Maryam. I thought this was an excellent discussion. I always have so many thoughts when I listen to these discussions that it is hard to articulate here. I generally feel very in the middle in society, often feeling overwhelmed from being surrounded on all sides by chaos. Some phrases which really struck me (I may misquote them). "All faiths believe in humanity" - yes, I think that humanity is a moral stance that every person should take. I am very much an athiest born into a society of christian culture, however it is clear from a variety of sources that the organism's desire to survive means that it wants positive outcomes in the world around it as suffering would not be beneficial. Therefore "healing is collective" is an application which I believe in rather than me and my closest over everybody else. This is probably the biggest mindset error that we lose when the world has less moral standing, when texts are removed from society, or manipulated to suit an ideal. I loved the ideas for training, there is a presentation based on this content which can be created for trainers, (if this is not that in itself). If we are to promote humanity, then there is a start of a unit here to propose on how we do this. We need to increase our own awareness, challenge our own biases and views. I dont think personally these conversations are felt to be safe, or able to be carried out safely in most training programmes. "fear they will get it wrong" - I think people are scared to talk about these things in training or the room. It reminds me of discussing suicidal ideation, which is accepted as being more beneficial to discuss than to not. So if "I recognise there is a difference" is an offering to break the ice and it is beneficial to use this type of phrase to broach an issue for the person, then literally everyone can use this phrase?? Finally "liberation psychology" - "coping vs healing" should be part of all diversity training. Ive never heard of it before.

Thank you so much for this conversation Ayel, Mick and John. I found this after watching the conversation with Orna, Ayel and Dwight. I'm a UK-based counsellor with a British Jewish mother and a Muslim Egyptian father. This year has been full of discomfort, inner conflict, avoidance, anger and everything in between. What's helped me more than anything is conversations like this from grounded individuals that speak to their own process. Thank you! 💙

Thank you Ben. I love that you did this. You have raised the topic of mental health into the minds of the population, and that is the reason why you stood up and took on this challenge. You should be proud of your efforts. It makes me think of Andrew Yang, who ran for the presidency of the US, who believes in an humanistic education system. It is important that mental health policy is stood up for politically as you have done.

I really enjoyed this conversation, but it felt like you were just getting into some key topics when time came to an end. I think it is such an important topic at present and it would be good to hear more unpicking of the psychology around the topic and critical discussion about what we can do as therapists. I have concerns about advocacy, in that I see young people apparently hurt by engaging in this very public political debate via social media and I worry in case it might not be benefical for them. Is it better for people on balance to be out and engaging with this debate as it is empowering, or is this potentially traumatic as some responses are terrible? Why is this debate in society so divisive and how can we help as therapists? I hope this topic will be revisited as it is such an important topic right now. Perhaps a number of voices in discussion as with the boarding school or visible/invisible faith episodes. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and time with us. It is a wonderful series. Therapy allows for this type of psychological contact and discussion around the biggest of issues.

I think I agreed with almost every word said. This is how I view living and how I view politics. I hate being in the middle watching all this. The psychology around the behaviours, particularly the impact of fear is, in my view, key to the polarisation we face.

Wow! This was such an important conversation in the context of the series (so far - I am still far behind). I have been going backwards and forwards on this issue for a long time, but today I recognised the benefits of the approach of psychotherapists being congruent (as opposed to being neutral) in the room with their clients regarding controversial issues discussed in the later stages of the discussion. However, it is still problematic as wide application comes with caveats that need to be considered. Firstly, it would also have to be accepted that counsellors and psychotherapists can be political, and therefore secondly, that means we would need to accept that people can be (are) politically in the opposing camp. This would mean that they could also be felt as challenging from a opposing point of view, and cite their examples of their experiences. As a note I have left therapists before who i have felt were not on my page politicially (/ held stereotypes I found offensive) Overall, it does probably hint that there would be a greater risk of rupture within the relationship, on either side. This is fine in private practice, those who can afford to move can do so, but what about people took a big step coming to therapy and may not return, or if we are looking at government services, what might the impact of the rupture be. If it would not be right to discuss in an IAPT environment, then political exploration becomes more likely applied solely based on the context of which the therapy takes place in and the practitioner's belief system. As I say, I have shifted back and forth on this dilemma throughout your discussions, and it is so important to have this debate. When I started writing I felt like I agreed, now i'm less sure again. I will keep thinking about this. I propose that is what the therapist within the relationship must ensure that they are doing if they did implement the strategy (consider the impact on the overall, multi-dimensional process) when thinking about broaching with their clients. Thanks all 🙂

Absolute gold for me at 30 minutes +. "Existential philosophy is any philosophy that looks at ontology - the basic givens of human existence, the givens of being, and the givens of the universe, not just in the west but all over the world e.g. the socratics, the stoics, the buddhists, the taoists - they all shared common understandings. An existentialist is the name given to the thinkers from the 1900s - Sartre, Heidegger, De Bouvoir, Spinoza - very important post-war, but they are also of their time. We now live in time when we need a Copernican revolution. Copernicus determined that the earth moved around the sun not the sun around the earth, Galileo produced evidence to prove Copernicus wrong. We live in a time when we need another Copernican revolution - just as the earth isn’t the centre of the universe, we humans are not the centre of the world. We’re currently stuck in an anthropocentric humanist worldview in which we believe we can do with the earth and the universe what we want. That it’s all about competition and consumption and materialism. These things destroy the environment and in so doing ourselves. Rather than humans being at the centre, maybe the greatest learning of our time is to de-centre ourselves. This has large social and political implications, and it also has implications to our own personal relationships.

Well put, though I’m of the understanding we as human beings are here for only a very short time on a universal level. We are all dust, and this complex cosmic rock will long outlive our existence and carry on its trajectory. Only consciousness is the constant of our transcendence

Great stuff. But I thought it was weird to say "the drugs aren't working as well as they did in the 80's". The drugs have gotten better (at least, they can do more, different things). Each drug does what it always did; It's not like we've developed herd immunity to them (Although they are in the water some places...). No, really it's your main claim that explains everything: people are more mentally ill than they used to be, because of the real world itself

I have to say, at face value, "integrating social activism into therapeutic practice" sounds like a truly terrible idea. Clients come to therapy for help and support and to feel safe being themselves. Bringing our own social views and opinions, or politics into it is the last thing any therapist should even want to do? I shudder at the mere thought of it, and the terrible implications that could arise from it, such as negative experiences for clients and damage to the reputation of the profession as a whole. As therapists we should serve all clients, not promote our own ideologies. And remember, not every therapist is going to share YOUR social and political beliefs and views, if this is the direction the profession moves in, then therapists who believe the opposite to what you do, will also come through that open door and bring their own views into their practice too. What ever happened to professionalism?
