Originally composed by Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) as an organ piece in 1850, L'adieu des bergers (The Shepherds' Farewell) eventually became a choral movement with Berlioz's own added text in his Op.25 oratorio L'enfance du Christ (The Childhood of Christ). Here’s my instrumental interpretation (including awkward page turn!) of this transcendent chorale.

To celebrate the October 10 birthday of the iconoclastic genius Thelonious Monk (1917-1982), here’s his gorgeous ballad “Pannonica”, which immortalizes his great patron Baroness Kathleen Annie Pannonica de Koenigswarter (née Rothschild), sometimes referred to as the "bebop baroness” for her generosity and unswerving support of Monk and many other jazz luminaries.
