Parashat Shoftim – Accepting Uncertainty | Rabbi Shai Finkelstein
In ancient times, the solution to uncertainty in life was found by going to seers or sorcerers. However, the Torah forbids this and expects us to accept life’s uncertainty and not seek certainty. On the other hand, we are told that God will raise a prophet and the people are commanded to listen to him. How can this contradiction be understood and how does uncertainty benefit humanity?

Parashat Re’eh - To See Beyond | Rabbi Shai Finkelstein
Переглядів 38 тис.День тому
This Parasha presents the idea of ‘seeing’ a blessing and a curse despite the fact that they are not tangible objects that can be seen but can only be heard. What is the meaning of this verse and what is the eternal message that can be learned from the demand to see and not just hear? Invoking the Presence of Elijah | Elijah the Prophet in Medieval Ashkenaz | Dr. Chana Shacham-Rosby
Переглядів 72День тому
Elijah the Prophet was usually unseen when present or seen by a select few. However, his image was included in Jewish visual art from the late Middle Ages, as well as special ritual objects associated with his figure. In this session we will discuss Elijah’s (in)visibility and the material culture of signaling his presence and absence simultaneously. In the Jewish year and life cycle Elijah the...

Elijah was connected to the ritual of circumcision since late antiquity across most of the Jewish diaspora. We will focus our attention on the particular characteristics of Elijah’s presence in circumcision ceremonies in medieval Ashkenaz. Elijah’s figure was a prism for expressing and reinforcing foundational messages within the community. In the Jewish year and life cycle Elijah the prophet a...

In the first centuries AD, the idea crystallized that Elijah would be involved in the eschaton. We will examine how medieval Christians and Jews in Europe discussed Elijah’s eschatological role and how these mutually exclusive approaches to the future reflected contemporary struggles of identity. In the Jewish year and life cycle Elijah the prophet appears in different contexts and forms. In th...

Is the book of Deuteronomy a continuation of the previous books or does it have a uniqueness and characterization of its own? The last two Parashot of the book of Bamidbar describe the request of the tribes of Reuven and Gad not to enter the Land of Israel and to remain on the other side of the Jordan river and Moses's reaction is very harsh. Why is Moses angered by their request? Can we see a connection to the next Parsha (Parashat Masei) that describes the journeys of the people of Israel in the desert. Why is this ...

Can sponsors please put their ads at the beginning or the end, the interruptions are irritating and probably no one is interested because they disturb the flow of the discussion. This is a very important and serious discussion of what the Torah says and how it has vital lessons for our lives and situation today in Israel.

This commentary was insight into human nature, that we often want to make or have something of our own, but especially in times of war (like now) everyone has to contribute. Parshat Matot says that, on G-d's instructions, Moshe sends 12,000 soldiers to war against Midian, 1000 from each tribe, with Pinchas, son of Elazar Ha Cohen, "the sacred vessels and sounding trumpets in his hand." To get the Mitzraim out of ourselves, we need to build our families and strengthen our communities in Israel, the sacred vessels and sounding trumpets in our hands.
