My name is Paul Schommer and I'm just your average Olympian training for biathlon. The journey #StartsNOW!
Flatlander- North Dakota Moose Hunt
This is the story of my unlikely journey to hunt moose in North Dakota. My life has had many twists and turns that have put me on paths that I would have never chosen on my own, but have resulted in amazing opportunities.
A big thank you goes out to all those who helped me put this video together, including videographer Payton Jahnke, assistant videographer and emotional support Barry Termaat, production advisor Chris Parr, my wife Jillian, coach Chad Salmela, The Gutta, Matt Lee and the countless others who have helped me along the way. Special thanks to those at Sitka and Vortex for hooking me up with some gear for my hunt.

The Canadian Biathlon Team joined us for our July camp, during which we had a time trial. Having competitions during the summer is important to stay in touch with both the physical and mental aspects of competition that are hard to replicate in training alone.

Weird times here in Lake Placid as the air quality takes a dive from fires up in Canada. We decide to keep our workouts indoors for the day to protect our lungs during our intervals.

Classic Whiteface workout, 60-70 min level 3. This workout is one of my favorites that has some great benefits. Being able to have a continuous hard effort helps build efficiency of skiing but also increases fitness all in one.
The Training Story- Level 3

In this episode I go over level 3 training, also known as the anaerobic threshold. This is a special zone, because if you can increase your level 3 fitness you will become an endurance racing machine!
The Training Story- Level 2

In this second video of the Training Story I talk about the other base endurance training zone, level 2. This was the hardest zone for me to talk about because I generally don't like to train in it! But it does have some benefits to those who don't have as big of training volumes and still want to build endurance.
The Training Story- LEVEL 1

In this first video of the series, I talked about Level 1 and why it is a key part to endurance training.

Many times we want to be recognized for our successes, but what happens when we enter a room of strangers, and our accolades become obsolete? Did what we accomplish become something of the past, or is there a part of it we carry with us.

Cool video man. Nice bull moose. Better friends and family.
Great Video Paul...Congrats
Hands down one of the best hunting films I’ve ever watched.
Phenomenal storytelling and a great watch. Congrats on an awesome Bull!
This was fantastic! All glory to God…. Way to go, man. Thx for sharing all this! Nodak is a sleeper state that I’d live in in a heartbeat if my wife had more fondness for the long winters. lol.
wholesome
i live in williston and have hunted the exact same spot he was from his onx map
By far your best, Paul. And, I’ve loved them all.
Awesome watch! Great story. Well edited. Thanks!
That sir, was quite impressive. Probably one of the best videos I’ve seen on UA-cam. Be proud. Nicely done!😉
What a great journey. Such a well put together story and production of your journey.
Respect!
One word…. Incredible.
thanks for sharing
Incredible story, incredible job capturing this hunt. Incredible editing and presentation. Truly well done sir, congratulations!
Thank you for sharing such a personal story.
Fantastic Paul! Thanks for sharing .
so pumped
I haven't heard the word dig used like that in a long time. 😊
Hi Paul - what kind of lubricant or rust preventive (if any) do you apply to the bolt and its components? Routine use or seldom? Thanks for the video!
Can't believe I have to rollerski in Minnesota in February (and January) to train for my first Birkie. 😒Minnesota has NEVER been so snowless. There are motorcycles out on the streets. I would rather fall on soft, beautiful, white snow 🌨☃
Love this video and all your others. Nice. There is a little cash on offer to race this old man up a few lumps. Just ask. Ski hard Ski often.

Paul! Just listened to your Heartbeat interview again. Keep videos coming. Edit them or don't. Just slap a go pro to your head and share something.
Thanks man, we had training camp there last year and I was just on the down loop, because I was too scared for going up, when I saw the uphill to the shooting range and the downhill from it. We are going there in 2 weeks so I think I will try my best to survive the downhills and I think it would be fun 😀.
how did it go? I am going there next week and after watching this vid I think I am a bit scared to say the least 😅

What #’s is your setup?
For this I was shooting 60 lbs with arrows around 450 grains.
Seems like a fun venue for a summer race.
lol sean what a flex
A masterpiece 😂. Great vid, Paul
Go USA! Thanks for posting!
Nice
Loved the spent cartridge casing leaping off the ground and into the action of your Anschutz!
That treadmill is very useful, I see a lot of teams use them these days.
Can you add names over people's heads like a video game? I dont know who's who.
Well done on this video, and the small bite of birthday-schmarnn.
Keep these videos coming!
First view, first like,
Bro your cracked. That is just outrageous
Way to go boss!!! First time with a 590 67x is steller!! You remind me of my Dad he always says im not changing anything till after the shoot, then day night week befor changes something I just laugh at this point some times it works some times it doesn't. Good on you for trying something out of the norm. 5 spot is a tough game to play its so mentally frustrating. If your ever in Grand Junction Colorado and have your bow I'd be honored to shoot with you. By chance was this a state or national shoot?
Well I appreciate that! I had a lot of fun and was a great opportunity to work on my mental game. It was the state championships for South Dakota. Would be awesome to make it down to Grand Junction sometime!
So, what level was your 3-hour skierg workout? Had to be level 1, right? But man it was fast. I skierg at around 2:25/500 in zone 2 (hopefully not graying into 3). For those of us who are not in shape a zone 1 workout is really slow...
That workout was level 1. There were times where I did a short pickup, but the goal and focus of the workout was level 1. The only times I really go more than level 1 is if I have a specific interval workout. Yes, it is slow at the beginning, but after building that efficiency you will reap the benefits of the training zone.
@@paultschommer Humor me? What is your "level 1" pace on the skierg?
@@philipsmart9474 I usually will look at watts before pace, but I think I am around 2:00 min/500 m. For watts I am around 140-150 watts.
I am looking forward to hearing about level 2. I have been guilty of going too hard even when I thought I was going easy. The older I get, the more fit I used to be.
The dog looks bored.😢
42,195 meters is the official marathon distance. The Concept2 Global Marathon Challenge runs from 5/1 through 5/15. To participate you have to set your erg for exactly the distance (21097 if you just want to do the half).
Then enter your exercise into the online logbook.
Thank you. This is my new skierg Z2 workout entertainment 😉
You'd make a good coach.
I like idea of constantly building the "simple skills". It gives confidence.
Great video
You rock Paul! Your being a light started then…😎
I love when your wife's "runner sense" wants to scream, "Nothing new on race day!"
