LPFA Work Trip January 2024
Переглядів 2756 місяців тому
I went on an LPFA work trip. It was really fun and also really cold. Being cold was better for working. The work was mainly tread work which was fun, but once the group was large I felt a little like I wasn't able to contribute much so I spent two of the days brushing instead. Highway 33 is open even though Google doesn't know and will lead you astray. There are three single lane traffic lights...

I've always wanted to thru-hike the Santa Ynez mountains. In Part 2 I do a lot of paved road walking and admire the "Dos Vistas" on both sides.
Santa Ynez Traverse Part 1

I did a traverse of the Santa Ynez mountain range from Gaviota Peak to the Ventura River in Ojai. It was a crest walk pretty much all the way with amazing views on both sides. It took me 3 full days and one half day to cover the distance.

      It's 10 miles one-way and you start at the Piedra Blanca trailhead on Rose Valley Road near Ojai. This hike is better done any other time of year than summer or early fall.

    Nice Trip, I have been curious how the road was between Little and Big Cali, looks tough even with a mountain bike. I have been wanting to take my bike down to Middle SY campground but the Forest Service says it and P-Bar are closed but I guess there is no one around to enforce that! By chance, did you see any fish in the SY river? The dam caretaker at Gilbralter told me when Jamison spills, trout will go over and populate the river and lake.

    • @dianesoini
      @dianesoini 2 місяці тому

      The bikers I saw would ask how the road was. I thought it would be hard to do some of the washouts carrying a heavy bike but I'm not sure what strong men can do that I think is impossible. They all rode in from Juncal where the gate is closed. I think I vaguely remember seeing some tiny fish somewhere, maybe in the SY.

    When you’re pushing through lots of poison oak over multiple days, how do you deal with that exposure? Do you wash your body with soap and water and sleep in a clean set of different clothes each night? Any tips to dealing with PO oils?

    • @dianesoini
      @dianesoini 2 місяці тому

      If I touch it with my skin I try to wash my skin with some water. Try to rub it away with water, maybe put hand sanitizer on it for good measure. I try to avoid touching it as much as possible on my clothes or bare skin, use my trekking poles to hold it out of my way, step gingerly, etc. I sleep in my clothes. I sometimes get poison oak and it's really just an annoying rash, not a life or death matter. If I do get it I try not to scratch it and I find Claritin offers relief. It's good for insect bites, too.

    Congratulations on getting through with your thru-hike, from before sunrise to after sunset. It was amazing to see (one?) lupine blooming in November. I love the views, the oaks, the rock formations, your ambition to go from Gaviota to the Ventura River. It reminded me of J. Smeaton Chase's book California Coast Trails, the story of his 1911 horseback ride from Mexico to Oregon. The most memorable part of the book, to me and I think to him, was his stay with a Mexican American family on their little ranchita at the top of Refugio Pass. I once knew someone who lived at the San Marcos Trout Club who would run from there to Gaviota when he was a teenager (also with the last name of Chase, but no relation to J. Smeaton). I love the way you show what you saw with minimal commentary, immersing viewers in the experience. I think it's an act of respect for the experience and the landscape. It looks like it wasn't an easy hike, but a peaceful one. There's nothing like getting above it all to gain perspective.

    • @dianesoini
      @dianesoini 9 місяців тому

      Thank you. I had never been around the Refugio Pass area before. It's really beautiful with the madrones, oaks and bay laurels. I found a listing for little ranchita "Rancho Dos Vistas". If only I had $15 million! I grew up in Goleta and have lived in Santa Barbara my whole life. As a kid I would look up at the mountains and imagine what was up there. I finally went up there to see.

    Great Video! Thanks for sharing. My friends and I hiked from Benchmark to the Canadian border this summer. Unlike your experience in the bob, all the blowdowns had been cleared! Almost felt like cheating after seeing your video from that section. I am also an older hiker, but limited by time off work, and by my fitness level; I could never keep up with you! It's hard to match other people's paces and preferences. Group hiking is always a compromise.

    How do you like your pocket tarp? I just got one with doors and am getting out with it in a couple of weeks.

    • @dianesoini
      @dianesoini Рік тому

      I like it but to be honest I have never used it in heavy rain. I have always worried it would not be the best experience in real rain. It started out as the doorless model and I made my own doors for it because I really did not believe the doorless one would be good in the rain and I'm still not sure even with doors because the inner area is very small. I've been in light rain and it's been okay, but one night I rolled out and didn't even realize I wasn't under the tarp until I woke up being rained on! When I did the CDT I brought a Gossamer Gear Twin instead. The Twin was great in rain because it's very large. I enjoyed sitting under there without fear watching it rain. I did a test on my deck with the Pocket Tarp in heavy rain and it seemed that there was significant splattering into my bed area, but of course there's going to be a lot more splattering when rain bounces off of the deck. I'm going to return to the AZT later this week and there are thunderstorms in the forecast so we'll see how miserable I'm going to be in my Pocket Tarp if it rains on me. There should be good tree cover from Pine going north so I should be able to find a sheltered location to make it be fine.
