My Most EMBARRASSING Mistakes as a Foreigner in Japan

Japan, where etiquette is king, and social rules are God. While I’ve had a host of wonderful experiences in the time I’ve lived here, there have been those times where I have, badly messed up. If you aren’t careful, navigating Japanese etiquette as a foreigner can make you feel like a wrecking ball, haplessly smashing against the unwritten formal rules that govern society, annoying the locals a...

I'm a bald, white, American guy living in Japan who is currently wearing a hair system. I also often got the "You look like Jason Statham" comments or "かっこいい" comments as well. But frankly, I hate my appearance as a bald person and I definitely feel like it hurt my dating prospects here. I still dated as a bald guy, but since I started wearing a hair system, my matches and messages on dating apps and language exchange apps, and meetings improved. Not to say that I'm meeting women all the time or something (since I just turned 41, so the dating pool isn't so great and meeting younger women is much more difficult), but I still have had more success with "hair" than without. It's definitely a pain in the ass to wear hair systems, especially in the beginning when you get them new and hair to trim all the excess material off of them to fit the bald area of your head, and attaching it (with tape, glue, or both), but once it's cut and ready to wear, just having to remove it once every 2 weeks give or take and clean it and reattach it, it's not too bad, usually. Of course I wish I just had hair like when I was younger, but this at least gives me an option to have hair and have a second chance at life. Even people that I've known since when I was bald have said that they forgot that I was bald and got used to me with hair, or when I told people about it being fake, they had no idea and didn't care that it was fake, so it's definitely something to consider.

Excellent, informative and descriptive video with an exciting variety of specific places of interest !! However, excessively showing off his bare legs, shorts, and constant focus of video footage on his face. That was totally unnecessary, since we viewers are primarily interested in seeing NAHA, not continuous naked male legs from behind, and a face with a hat.

What is the dating experience like as a bald man? I'm Irish, 22 with a receding hairline and long thinning hair, planning to move to Japan next year. But I fear my chances at love will be compromised in Japan compared to at home.

Shouldn’t be a problem! Japanese people think a foreign bald guy (with a shaved head, not a combover or anything) is cool, because it’s emblematic of foreigner culture. They think bald Japanese are not cool because they see it as a sign of poor health, but Japanese will see a foreign guy and see it as a cool fashion choice. Why do they have that standard? I’m not sure lol Also, I’ve seen many international couples where the foreign guy is bald. I’m sure you can find the right person. Best of luck!

Just this week a 5 year old girl asked me "why don't you have hair!?". I told her my hair decided to leave me. She was a bit confused but laughed...and btw, I've known this neighbor girl for over one year but just now she asked. Then the next day I passed some kids playing soccer in a school yard and while I drove past they started yelling at me. Their soccer ball was kicked over the school fence and they hoped I could retrieve the ball for them. I stopped the car, threw the ball to them and one of them yelled..."cool haircut!"... I'm so used to shaving my head since my hair began to thin. I don't ever think about it till asked. Not sure if it is confidence or just accepting reality.

I’m not sure, but if you download the Go Taxi app, you should be able to check. At the very least, you should be able to get a taxi back to Isehara station and take the Odakyu Line back to Shinjuku from there. Hope that helps!

Yes, they like to make fun of baldness. And expect people with baldness should accept it and respond it in a humorous way like in some standup comedy. Body shaming is pretty common there. By the way, i have early baldness. When i lived there, i was even laughed while commuting on the train

Got this on my recommended and clicked not thinking much of it, cause it seemed like an interesting video. Only once I was halfway through and left for a bit and came back later did I realise it came from a small channel. I would’ve easily thought this came from a channel with 100k+ subs 😅 keep up the good videos man!

Very nice! As a bald American living in Japan, I was a little self conscious about it but seeing your video made me feel better. Thanks!

I remember that one time I went to the post office, did all my transfers and withdrew what was remaining after that which would be my monthly fun money (as I drain out the Japanese account) and put it all in a folder that contained my passports and other important documents which I had on the time on me. I went on my motorbike and zipped off to see my client. The meeting was a success and then after wanting to grab a bite to eat, I then realised that all of my stuff was missing. I quickly phoned the post office that time and they thankfully had my documents but will be closed by the time I arrived. There was a police box nearby them so they would drop it off along the way. On the way home, I went to the same police box which was unmanned. I entered and used the phone inside to ring the police station and informed them that I was here to collect the items. They acknowledged my request and said the police officer would be there .................. in 1.5 hours. I eventually got the items back but lesson learnt.

As mendokusai as that was for you, we should still be incredibly grateful you got your stuff back. In a lot of places around the world, you’d never see your stuff again. Thanks for the comment Marvin!
