A few clips from the 2017 ghost train. Haven't uploaded in like a year to UA-cam so I figured it was time to shoot something new. Shot on a Canon 6D with 50mm 1.4 lens, video isn't my strong suit. This years theme (escape from area 12) was great, a zombie themed trip. Seemed fresh and new after previous years. Former US Army and White Pass & Yukon 190 disguised as number 13 pulls passengers aro...

    Glad you caught that. I used to live in Hickory. Never thought I would see the day NS would drop through traffic from that line, it used to be pretty steady and consistant all the time with four through freights, the coal trains, locals at Oyama and whatever else NS threw into the mix.

    I see nothing wrong with this. A straight forward move. However as others have said, the problems really start if the wagons don’t clear the points so the loco can’t go back onto them. Get a feel for your handbrakes as you let the wagons roll, don’t panic and don’t stop too early.

    I wonder if a railroad would ever try this with one employee with a belly pack and a remote controlled locomotive? I guess you need at least 2 people with one working the switch if you need to have a person always riding the cars, and working the hand brakes.

    How did they release the brakes without air? I thought the brakes applied when the air is disconnected.

    • @bpatuenwerock
      @bpatuenwerock 3 роки тому

      The air dumps once the locomotive detaches, the brakes are only applied when air is in the system. Otherwise you can bottle the air (which you should never do) and do it that way.

    • @haroldreardon8070
      @haroldreardon8070 3 роки тому

      The air was bled off the cars. No air= no air brakes. They set the hand brake and used that to ease the cars out of the siding and then stop.

    • @insylem
      @insylem 3 роки тому

      @@haroldreardon8070 Thanks. Train brakes don't make sence to me for some reason.

    • @zackbobby5550
      @zackbobby5550 3 роки тому

      @@insylem Basically the compressor on the locomotive pumps air into reservoir tanks on each car. When the air is popped, these tanks use their air to apply the breaks. Normally this air will hold the brakes for a few hours, maybe even a few days on some models, but it will run out of air eventually, and the brakes will be released. That's why we still have to tie enough handbrakes to keep the train stopped without the use of the airbrakes.

    • @dshack4689
      @dshack4689 3 роки тому

      I had the same question insylem - I had (clearly mistakenly) always thought that the build up of air pressure was to release the airbrakes and therefore if a line broke the disconnected cars would lose pressure that was holding the brakes open and thus "fail safe"... I'm not a railway employee so I have no argument with those who have experience/knowledge, but I can't figure out how failsafe is possible if the airbrakes rely on the absence of air pressure to release and the presence of air pressure to engage? but i do recall if trucks lose air pressure they lose airbreaks so if trains work the same way then its the failsafe aspect that i don't quite get...
