Scruffy City Poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee"
great song
And it got 😂 sure, sure
Miss ya Matt
I met a liitle girl in Knoxville, a town we all know well And every Sunday evening, out in her home, I'd dwell We went to take an evening walk about a mile from town I picked a stick up off the ground and knocked that fair girl down She fell down on her bended knees, for mercy she did cry "Oh Willy dear, don't kill me here, I'm unprepared to die" She never spoke another word, I only beat her more Until the ground around me within her blood did flow I took her by her golden curls and I drug her round and around Throwing her into the river that flows through Knoxville town Go down, go down, you Knoxville girl with the dark and rolling eyes Go down, go down, you Knoxville girl, you can never be my bride I started back to Knoxville, got there about midnight My mother, she was worried and woke up in a fright Saying "dear son, what have you done to bloody your clothes so?" I told my anxious mother I was bleeding at my nose I called for me a candle to light myself to bed I called for me a handkerchief to bind my aching head Rolled and tumbled the whole night through, as troubles was for me Like flames of hell around my bed and in my eyes could see They carried me down to Knoxville and put me in a cell My friends all tried to get me out but none could go my bail I'm here to waste my life away down in this dirty old jail Because I murdered that Knoxville girl, the girl I loved so well
I love this song
The BEST cover of this Song EVER!!!!!!!
Fine Song Writing
Beautiful song
🔥🔥🔥
My high school history teacher introduced me to this song. I have heard many versions of this song. He showed this song to many of his classes as young as seventh grade. Yeah. that was Mr. Doyel. We all liked him. Most of the time. I used to sing this much to the ire of people around me. it Freaked out the house parents. Most of us did. Then I got to looking around as an adult. I found more songs like this. Yeah. He liked strange music. we Used to sing while in class. I went to a school for the blind. if he Had done this in a public school well yeah.
I first heard this years ago at my mom's house. She had several albums on blue grass. Sent chills down my spine 😢

^ The original lyrics
This is the 4th version I've heard of this song, including the original, two by Lera lynn, and lastly Local H. All have their own sound and all are excellent.
😭👏🫶🏽
Thanks for keeping our Home land Ballad alive
I love this. A beautiful interpretation of a beautiful song.
Amazing!!! These old ballads are our heritage!!!
Can anyone point me to her first recorded cover with just her singing? I love that version but can’t find it anywhere.
Amo a Lera Lynn!!!
Well damn!
I don’t understand how this was popular. Killing a child? Wow. Someone explain it to me.
It is not about a child, it's about a girl that he was dating.
Sometimes..
Enjoyed guys
this is amazing
god damn this is amazing
As good as it gets!!...
Say, say, my playmate Won't you lay your hands on me Mirror my malady Transfer my tragedy Got a curse I cannot lift Shines when the sunset shifts When the moon is round and full Gonna bust that box, gonna gut that fish We could jet in a stolen car Bet we wouldn't get too far 'Fore the transformation takes And the bloodlust takes And the crave gets slaked My mind has changed My body's frame But God I like it My heart's aflame My body's strained But God I like it My mind has changed My body's frame But God I like it My heart's aflame My body's strained But God I like it Charge me your daily rate I'll turn you out in kind When the moon is round and full Gonna teach you tricks that'll blow your mind Baby doll, I recognize Your hideous thing inside If ever there were a lucky kind It's you, you, you I know it's strange Another way To get to know you You'll never know Unless we go So let me show you I know it's strange Another way To get to know you We've got to move Here comes the moon So let me show you Show you... Dream me, oh dreamer Down to your core Open my hands And let them weave onto yours Feel me, completer Down to my core Open my heart And let it bleed onto yours Feedin' on fever Down on all fours Show you what all that howlin's for Hey! Hey! My baby Let me lay waste to thee Burn down their hangin' trees Gotta curse we cannot lift Shines when the sunset shifts There's a curse, comes with a kiss The bite that binds The gift that gives Now that we're gone for good Writhing under your riding hood Tell your grandma, mama too It's true, true, true My mind has changed My body's frame But God I like it My heart's aflame My body's strained But God I like it My mind has changed My body's frame But God I like it My heart's aflame My body's strained But God I like it
You sold that story!!!!
like to see her do "winter",,,,that would be awesome.
So beautiful.
I knew Todd many years ago I hope he is doing well now.
Little late to discovering this song, but what a song!! And what a singer! 😍♥️♥️♥️
❤ ❤ ❤
Great tune
I love this version. I wish she would record it this way. Her recorded version is different.
Dang.
From my wife’s notes. Shannon left this world 18 months ago. From an old English ballad. The Loudermilk Brothers reworked it and wrote this tragic ballad. The Loudermilk’s recorded under their stage name, the Louvin Brothers. John D. was their cousin.
A great version of this old ballad!
I love this!! My mother used to sing this to us on road trips when we were young. This and the Death of Little Kathy Fiscus and the Preacher Who Went out A Huntin. This is such a great version of Knoxville Girl

A very good job on this old song, and the old Gibson sounded great also.
Remember this from my childhood.. Makes me feel old but I love these old ballads!
My favourite song sang to perfection!
Pick a lead singer ffs...blondie should lead. May have been a bigger band if they coulda kept their egos in check
Just came across this. Unbelievable. Check out the Screamin Cheetah Wheelies if you want to hear Mike sing along with a badass band!
Boys that's best I heard!
My grandmother used to sing and play this for me when I was a child 💜 but seriously I would request it over and over ...kinda strange cause it is really a fucking murder ballad!!
Same with my grandma. And now she's passed and I was so glad to hear it again. And even more glad I can hear her in my head singing along.
Liked it alot
Don't get it. It's unmelodic, affected and screechy.
Fuck you
I adore this man!
Wow! Great arrangement. Different. Nice!!!
