Newport beat the All Blacks

New Zealand defeated at Rodney Parade in 1963 - the only defeat of their 36 match tour
im a kiwi living next to Newport Wales and I can tell you the nostalgia here for this match even today 70 years later!!
Nothing like a local Gwen’s derby. Hard men doing hard mens things. Good to see mark brown and turned getting stuck in
Gareth roberts was a great flanker
I think the story goes that Dickie Uzzel rang in sick that day only to be told by his boss that he had seen him playing!
It is said that this was one of the few occasions ever where the All Black pack was dominated by the oppostion 8.
I always wondered why Paul turner didn't get more caps a truly classy out half
Thank you for this archive
Newport well beaten again
Newport played very well on the day and were unlucky to lose to a late Horgan penalty
Great video
I was there, standing just in front of the support post in line with the 25. I remember all the All Black players after the game signing autographs and mingling with the supporters. They were true sportsmen and Whineray was the ultimate gentleman. The greatest victory by any team over a full touring side, the only defeat of the tour.
Cracking try.
Dear regional rugby, "what's it like to see a crowd"?
NEWPORT,,ROBBED !!
I was there! The entire first team squad from Newport High School got taken to watch the game. I was 16 at the time and will never forget it, when John Uzzel got that drop goal. My one eternal memory was watching the All Blacks throwing everything against Newport in the final quarter in a desperate attempt to win, notably flanker Waka Nathan tearing into rucks with his feet pumping like a long jumper1 What a day
I'd rather download and put on dvds these games than watch what's passing for rugby on the TV these days. And I ref this current era stuff! At least I got to play in the past era.
Great days when Wales had proper clubs with strong local support
As a Newport supporter I like this.
My dad went to the match and I remember him coming home rather drunk and my mum telling him off, but he didn't stop smiling.
Does anyone kno how I get hold John "Dick" Uzzell? I got the programme to this game for him to sign.
He's a friend of my family
But I need to be able to contact you somehow
I see former Newport prop John Rawlings from time to time and wonder how he ever became a prop with his slim, athletic build. But then again, Neath's Brian Williams wasn't exactly your stereotypical prop forward either! Now, Rhys Morgan on the other hand......!
Celtic Warrior John was an excellent player, if I remember correctly he got called up for the 1987 World Cup squad but I don’t think he ever won a cap.
I was there!! Honest v young schoolboy only thing I remember was 3-0 and the disabled cars pitchside . Glyn Davidge was always my fav Black & Amber
Commentator blatantly admits newport lock was pissed ie steaming in this game
I was there!!!
Top class win by Newport. Proper tidy!
Yes,proper rugby and a proper crowd
How do you get these great videos?
Richard, you need to post the full game or send me a copy please...Widdy def got the ball down.. Check the ref he doesn't look at the grounding on any of the efforts. I speak to Cardiff players to this day and they still nervously laugh about the result as they dodged a bullet that day... If only we had a TMO, an assistant ref or a ref to say collapsed scrum, penalty try! still the sign of a great team is to win against all the odds, so good on Cardiff ...Thanks Jeff Howells (played 12 that day) great posting mate..
Widdicombe grounde3d the ball no doubt in my mind, the referee had a shocker
Shelford's teams when they did the Haka, it began to take on a more menacing style.
When Buck Shelford was made captain-he said lets do this properly-these half-assed versions disrespect Maori culture and, therefore all of us. Under Shelford, the All Blacks had a mini-golden period (1988-1990)
Why was it disrespectful. They did their best considering that most were European. I think your comment is disrespectful to the All Blacks in general regardless of the ethnicity of the All Black performing the Haka. I watched Sid Going perform a Haka during the All Black game against the Baa Baas 1973. Syd (a Maori) gave a shocking performance...would you say of all people that his performance was disrespectful to his own people?
Yeah Wales were great back in those days, oh hang on we were getting dicked by England and the rest, now boot very much on the other foot, never go back to these dark days again!
Fuck wales, Pooler forever
My first ever rugby match - school took us and gave us the day off - we sat on the pitch behind the posts. Didn't realise the significance of the match at the time - but it certainly gave me bragging rights over my Llanelli mates 10 years later.
What about Mike Shyne?
Brilliant footage! Sick of hearing about the Scarlets being the only Welsh team to beat the All Blacks!
both swansea and cardiff have also beaten them of course
that was not 1993 i was there it was 1996
They call that a Haka? Looks more like the Hokey Cokey... =/
brilliant stuff
@MrCEreviews And I was there each time
This is the only clip I can find which shows a brief glimpse of the finest fly half of all time, Dai Watkins. What a fantastic day, and yes, I WAS THERE!
I agree with you re. DW. He doesn´t get nearly enough credit.
I was there too!
this team was almost the test team and had their only defeat of the tour and remember tours were 3 months long then what a day and fantastic cellebration in the clubhouse..
was meeky hooker that day??
Ta for uploading the video. Welsh rugby doesn't know what it's missing with the advent of 'regional' rugby.
makes me proup to be from newport...bout the only thing that does
I recently watched a recording from the 80's when Pooler hammered Llanelli by 40 points plus. How times have changed. I was at this game also and remember that it was absolutely freezing as Neil Jones states. Sad to say that from this game on Pooler did go downhill and have fallen away but are looking a good bet for a return to the top flight for next season.
Ahh good, fantastic night in Newport.
Anymore highlights from this game?
But the difference is they are all different! That's the point. It's like Mel Gibson Morris Dancing in Braveheart. Samoa, Fiji and Tonga all speak different languages. It is a fabricated ceremony, out of place in the modern game.
Amazing match. Also, it was interesting how amateur the haka was...suggests it is a relatively modern development. Surely it is time that, in the professional era, this was ended, or at least restricted to those actually born in NZ! What other professional sport gives one, and only one (OK, Samoa as well) the chance to psyche out opponents before they even start the game?
Oh the good old days!! I was at that game (supporting Pooler) and was gutted we lost Dean Oswald in the 1st half. We were on top of the league at that point, and went downhill from there on. Pooler have never recovered really. Awesome to see this footage again though. Got any more? I used to have a whole library of Pooler games on video but lost them all. gutted.
