Always ask a fisherman before trying to wrangle his fish!
Catching big fish from the surf with light weight gear is always a challenge. On this particular day I had a fisherman to my left who kept trying to wrangle my fish……. Comment below your thoughts.

Nothing beats targeting these big drum during the winter months here in northwest Florida! The bait of choice used to catch these big guys were FISHGUM with frozen shrimp. I was using single drop pompano rigs which makes bringing in these large drum a blast!

This 7ft sandbar shark really put my 10000 battle reel to the test. The setup I was using for this shark was a 12ft heavy duty squadron surf rod. With 65lb braid and a custom hand tied shark rig.

    I haven't run into a situation like that before. Thanks for sharing that. For me, it's always someone coming on the beach after I've been set up since before daylight, and they set up literally 30-foot away. Especially when I'm the only one there for hundreds of yards each way.

    I'm here because J. Reed recommended you. Been watching your stuff too! I am planning a trip down to Navarre next Spring (2026). I planned on booking you as a guide. It will be 2 of us old dudes (around 60). I really want to experience the pomp run so I get hooked and want to keep coming back. Is mid-April best or earlier in your estimation? I'll be bringing a bunch of surf rods/reels and could use some suggestions on rigs. Right now I have 4 Spinfisher 6 (2 5500, 2 4500). I'll be picking up rods down there to properly match things up. I should have 6-8 outfits for pomps, whiting, redfish, big uglies, smaller shark species. Thanks for sharing these adventures with us Mid-Westerners!

      @@fishinfool3795 yessir mid April is definitely a great time for pompano. As you mentioned there normally is a spring run of pompano that come through during that time every year. I do have any and all gear needed for surf fishing. I highly recommend allowing me to show you my setups on our charter. This will eliminate any extra buying for you. Once we have completed our land based charter together, you will know exactly what you need rod/reel wise. I will also show you how I tie my own custom pompano rigs. Keep watching my videos I appreciate all the support and I looked forward to meeting you in 2026 when you make it down for a visit.

      I follow the tides. High tides down here on the panhandle run afternoons and nights all fall/winter. And sunsets being so early makes a lot of my trips seem late. But as the spring and summer comes I will be fishing a lot more during the daytime.

    Good stuff my guy, what time of year can you find shrimp in Navarre? Cold months and warm months?

    • @FloridaFishingIsLife
      @FloridaFishingIsLife Рік тому

      You can find them year round. During the warm months they are much easier to catch. But during the cold months they are still there just deeper in the ground. When it is cold i tend to pump one hole about 5-6 times to get to them. But when it is warm they tend to show up after the second pump. Also it is much easier to catch them during low tides. I normally make a routine of catching these guys during low tide, and then take them with me to fish during the next high tide that day. Good luck to you on your next adventure.
