Sounds like a Variac to obtain the Brown Sound. Be aware for EVH 5150 III amps, according to Howard Kaplan the filament voltage is already dialed down, so this would be unnecessary.

A few things: 1) tube amps can be fixed relatively easily so relax 2) I use a variac to get down to 110V which is the voltage that is printed on the rear panel of the amplifier. I regularly see an average of 122V so 12V overvoltage is significant. Brown Box does not allow for specific voltage targets, only percentages. A variac with a real time voltmeter and ammeter is superior to the Brown Box and cheaper. 3) when you undervolt, you overcurrent. This means when you decrease input voltage it also decreases plate voltage at the power tubes. When plate voltage is decreased, plate current increases. Short story long is, if you want to do like EVH and brown your amp down to 89V, you will also have to bias the amp accordingly or risk burning the cathodes out.

hello kyle, i was about to buy this amp untill i noticed the you had your MXR-OD "ON" and the KHDK "ON".... so basically that wasnt the real amp sound? im a newbie to this kind of stuff.. Thank you for this video thou🤘🤘

Amazing vid!!! I think the amp pairs best with the Engl cab and the Omega 8. Really punchy and not too harsh on the high end.

I had a kid post high school graduation thus I stopped playing. My adult years are taking care of my 3 kids and my wife. And over last 3 years I have taken care of my elderly mother helping her maintain her home, car, life, and helping my grandmother. My time is spent and so have been my finances. I am far far from rich I earn $99,000 per year, work in my house consumes the other half of my time opposite my family. I actually gave up playing for last 7ish years. I just didn't have free time, extra money, or mainly the willpower. Now I am in a better position the haters can hate because I am gonna start small to get back into it then once my feet are wet I am going to buy a very nice setup. So, they can judge me as much as they want but I am gonna have a nice setup before I die even if it's just to play the most basic rock/metal songs.

Me and a friend stayed with a friend of his from a guitar and amp forum.This dude was like you he had a wall of amps,pedalsand guitars. My friend who had the gift to get a good tone out of a Gorilla amp and a DOD Thrash Master pedal lol. He got great tones out of some of the higher end amps but when he plugged into Krank and fuck our faces melted and same for the 5150. Nothing wrong with boutique amps and pedals but you don't have to have it to nail down a killer tone. If things were like they were back in the early 90s when I started playing you weren't worthy unless you owned Mesa cabs and two rack box full of gear lol. Play what makes you happy I thinks that the lesson most guitar player don't learn until later on in life.

If you played this to someone without context and blindfolded, they would be thinking its different amps, thats just how big of a difference different speakers and cabs can make, its crazy. Hey man, just stumbled upon your channel. As I've grown up and have been a serial hobbyist of so many different things, I've come to notice that this is a perpetual problem across just about every hobby I've delved into. Thank you for making this video and keep trying to be a positive influence in the world... I do think people should play a 6 string before they jump into a 7 or 8, however, if they wanna learn Animals as leaders songs and that's what's going to motivate them to play then by all means go for it! What are your thoughts on the celestion 70/80 speakers in the laney gsl 4x12 @ 16 ohms compared to the MESA 4x12 with vintage 30 @ 8 ohms.

ive grown to like the red channel on my amp(same amp as you show here) for years i only played orange cause it would get more bassy and scoopy but the red ive learned has more snarl and grind and less fizz but way more presence(cant do that exagerrated scoopy sound as good but sits better in a mix)Also,and most importantly,these amps are a whole different beast when u start cranking them up ,which sux cause my hearing is suffering

So I think I remember hearing somewhere that the old carvin brand is now the guys behind keisel or at least the guitar shop....I remember carvin in the late 90s early 2ks where the ultimate bang for your buck...mts3200 full stack and a dc700 was a rig....

As a former owner of a boutique guitar store, I can attest that most gear snob gate keepers suck on guitar.

I will say of the stealth, you can get a more usable range out of the red channel with a lower output PAF style pickup. Those amps have SO much gain it feels extraneous to use anything high output.

I've always thought a terrific rhythm player would naturally be great at lead. I can see lead is really not your focus, as you've said yourself. I'm really surprised by this, because your rhythm chops are EXCELLENT!!!! I promise you I mean this is as a compliment. Plus, you have awesome gear.

I played a lot of shows with that amp and a ton of drunkin practices the Amp can chug...

Was thinking the stomp boxes...this was a ripoff of Olgas...but actually enjoyed the sounds you dialed in better.

I'm 38, when I was in my 20s I was all about "you need the expensive or best stuff only if you have earned it..." In my chase for tone I can attest that the peavey ultra series are great amps, especially when they were sub 300, I picked up my rivera used for 450 and that's another amp that doesn't get mentioned enough for how great they are. At the end of the day, you've earned the gear you paid for. You wanna play 12 bar blues on a custom reissue '59 and a dumble? have at it. You wanna put 6 metal zones in front of that same dumble and play For Whom the Bell Tolls? If that makes you happy, go for it.

I've owned about 8 of the pro line of HK amps from that era. They tend to like Greenbacks and not V30s from my experience. The new Triamp and Deluxe series amps play nicer with Mesa v30s it seems. Also, you gotta bias these amps a little on the warmer side, around 42 ma..
