Louis Vuitton. Meh.
July 2024. Louis Vuitton Art & Craft Elizabeth Pencil Case
Worth the money? No. Excellent design? No. Amazing craftsmanship? No. Heritage? Please. Cute Louis Vuitton? Sure.
Are we really paying for quality, craftsmanship, heritage, or designs when we bought these so called luxury goods? Especially in a post LVMH world? The “luxury” experience has been widely discussed as one of the main reasons for paying the prices we are tolerating. What is "luxury"? A very malleable term, and so much easier to manipulate, compared to the terms the industry used to use, "branded", and “designer". For me personally, this luxury consists of a brief momentary space in time where everything happens exactly as I expect them to. When just for a moment in time, I am not at the mercy of the unpredictability of the world, and everything seems to be revolving around my wants and needs.
It is a nice feeling.
Of course I am also having a lot of fun with the items I bought.
If exceptional quality, designs, and craftsmanships, are what you area really after, there are so many amazing craftspeople out there making really superb quality products. Many of them by hand, using excellent quality materials, for a fraction of the cost. Some of them have very long history and heritage, while others are in the making.
(The only one of these family owned luxury crafts LVMH purchased in the early years of their acquisition expansion, ended up sold for parts to Chinese companies, who then further sold these parts on, effectively killing the brand’s legacy. Feel free to google “Omas”).

Hermes Barenia Leather 🐴 Why It’s Not For The Fainthearted 🔥 Kelly 28, Kelly 32, HAC 32, Evelyne III

FURLA. Why Is Nobody Talking About This Affordable Luxury Brand?

In 2017 I spotted Loewe’s tan leather in their hammock bag and fell in love. I saw it again in 2019 as trimmings, then again in 2021, again as trimmings. Every time I see the Loewe logo, the bag that got away washed over my memory and I can’t shake it off. Is this to be the last original puzzle bag by Loewe made in their classic calf leather? Will the original puzzle bag be phased out and replaced by a different bag that only looks like the puzzle, called the “Edge”? What does Loewe’s “Asphalt Grey” really looks like? Rumour has it that the original puzzle, which apparently costs more to produce, will be reserved to Loewe's higher end range. (Tsk...

It is so beautiful! i'm considering on! I'm divided between a GG jackie and the puzzle large. Saw today that the Jackie, in canvas, is now the price of the large loewe in full leather. Bye Jackie.
@@BrunoEliasable Excellent choice. The “luxury” industry is trolling us at this point and I am done. I can show you how much amazing top quality items I bought instead with my cancelled Louis Vuitton order. I am only hanging around this space because I need to research current market prices for preloved luxury bags as I am liquidating my collection!
I like the Trollbeads look more rustic its just me ☺️
@@cmt1838 Yes they are! I am selling them all by the way!

En el momento en que vi el bolso kisluxs , supe que tenía que tenerlo.
I love this Herbag with natural vachette leather but I found that this bag is too heavy and too bulky.
@@TC-fq7cy Single grain natural leather sadly tend to be on the heavier side. This is relatively light because of the canvas. But you are right. It seems to be modelled after the Kelly and that’s not a shoulder bag. So the shape to me is awkward carried that way. Maybe that’s why it feels bulky to you? I am not sure. Combined with the closure this is definitely not for me and I am selling it. But others have made it work well for them. So who knows! 😅
That’s most of Hermes bags.
@@BrighterThanYours Some. Not most.
Thank you so much Anneke for sharing this info. I was wondering how would you tell the difference between Chamonix and barenia in the vintage natural colour (much lighter than fauve barenia). Thanks in advance!
@@inaonoson Hello! From memory Chamonix is coated. So the “natural” refers to the colour. I have what I think is vintage Chamomix. It’s been so long and these bags weren’t as big a deal as they are now so we hardly kept records and provenance like some people do now. I’ll try to find it and film a comparison.
I like the texture very fine leather . And good quality.
@@bellevue564 It is good quality BUT it isn’t single grain. So not my favourite. Which is why I gave it to my mum, and I have never carried this since I bought it 20 years ago. However it is one of the better designs and well priced out there that isn’t getting as much chatter around here for some reason. I am so glad you are enjoying yours!!
I love furla ,furla is my collection bag.
@@bellevue564 I am so glad they haven’t been forgotten! They are only a few of a handful brands who are still independent.
I am crazy about the Barenia fauve leather (the leather was soaked in oil for a quite long time) but vey difficult to get now a days. You have no idea how lucky you are! Patina is the charm.
@@TC-fq7cy Hello! I am glad I was a fan of it BEFORE it was popular. I can get over how people want it now. It wasn’t looking luxurious enough for most people 15 years ago. Too rustic. With the changing nature of the bag among Hermes fans who prefer their leather to look as they see them new from the store, no one wanted it. Why do people like it now do you think?
I have a bag and a watch. It is my FAVORITE Leather❤but the patina on my watch 💀
Thank you so so much for making this video. I love Barenia and Vache Natural - these are the only Hermes I collect. Let’s please connect offline. I would love your advise on care.
@@Journeywithclaire There is an excellent thread on Purse Forum called Ode To Barenia. It was from a time when collectors and enthusiasts could still sell to each other and restore our own bags in peace. Before these bags became more than bags and none of us could afford to risk having fun with them anymore 😅 There are amazing tips there!
I found myself seething over having to pay up front for a Louis Vuitton bag and then having to wait up to 3 MONTHS with NO GUARANTEE that my purchase won’t be cancelled. What is this? Amazon preorder……??? I’ve been in the luxury space for over 2 decades and I NEVER! The terms were clear when I paid but it didn’t sink in what I had actually done. I HAVE A RANT COMING. So I thought it might be a good opportunity to try streaming for the first time. I can’t schedule when this is going to be so please turn your notification bell and subscribe. Thanks! Maybe I’ll see you then!
Great unboxing must be nice to have a LV pencil case. "A fraction of reality" yes! But agreed so much has changed in the luxury market. From what I understand a lot of the high end designer brands have come under some scrutiny as of late for a number of reasons. But the Art & Craft monogram is really nice. Great discussion here. Think I will stick around 👍🥰☺
@@ALLIENYC Hello! Yes it is nice to have an LV pencil case although I am using it for something else. And yes, I think the secondary luxury market is overheated and overly commercialized. Once shareholders are involved, it was the end for ordinary folks trying to sell their unused bags because they are unused and they want to fee up some cash. NOT profit. Thanks so much for watching, commenting, and sticking around!
Always thought-provoking Anneke. So strange but the thing I immediately thought of as I listened to you talk about your bastion of control was my best friend from 25 years ago who dealt with bulimia for years.
Oof yes, ED is mainly not about food but about control 😣 The need for control is often associated with anxious tendencies, which I do have, and am aware of. Thankfully, I have learned to manage it in a reasonably healthy way. Speaking of health I hope yours is better now. I also hope your friend is well.
Hey Kelly. I am so sorry you had to take all of your content down. The conversation we had were most enjoyable and I regret losing a part of that which I could have with you on your side of the content. But you know I have a fountain pen and stationery channel now. Come join me over on that side. There are a lot of internal processes to be chatted about although usually people kept them to a surface level, in the past I experience that many are more open to digging deeper there. Hi Anneke! So as I am beginning to write this note, I realize I may be coming off as creepy. So I bought that large Loewe puzzle after watching your video and now I’ve just purchased a Barenia bag after watching this video of yours. Oh well. Tis what it Tis. Really, at this point in my bag collecting it’s about the different leathers out there and you convinced me it really was special. And thus I realized it was a gap in my collection that I needed to fill. I suppose that makes you a real influencer (trust me, I hate the term and I hate the silly system). Anyway, I got a 24/24 in the 29 size and it just arrived in the mail today. You are so spot on. Definitely something special about the feel- perfect combination of oils and waxes. Thank you for steering me in the right direction.
Wow!! Let us know how you go with that one! I do hate that term “influencer” 💀 I better be careful what I say in the future!!
I love furla i don't know why people don't talk about it
It is a pity. It is good quality bags with tasteful designs. They are one of a few independent design houses too.
Wow love the 2002 leather awesome
Because it has been used for two decades 🔥❤
Beautiful bags. 😊 What size is your HAC?
Thank you! It is a 32 cm 😁
Stunningly beautiful leather! Are those bags (and cuff) now just sitting in your closet? You should use them more often! That's what they were made for.
The watch cuff is in use since it is on my Apple Watch 😊 Sadly the bags have been sitting in my closet 💀 Since I moved back to New Zealand from Singapore my life style has changed 180 degrees 😅 Walking in sideway rain storms aren’t the type of days made for carrying a Birkin or a Kelly even when they are made of barenia! 🤣 But. You are absolutely correct, of course ❤️🔥
Wow thank you so much for sharing this info! So much knowledge and wisdom on Barenia! I used to have an Hermes Barenia watch strap and it scared me from Barenia. I ended up getting a Halzan 25 in the new Barenia that is textured and actually it has aged really well but waiting for it to patina was a bit distressful. I was offered a k28 in the same leather but I was still in between patina for my Halzan 25 so I turned it down. Looking back, maybe I should have taken it, but no regrets as I ended up with a gold on gold instead. But indeed I think it's worth to get at least one Barenia bag to experience the beautiful patina. I'm glad I have the Halzan 25...I need to often touch the bag and it has patina well. Thanks again for the in depth sharing! So interesting! By the way I heard the pebbled leather is more sensitive to oil...I did splatter some alcohol on it due to hand sanitizer. Hermes was able to touch it up a bit but I believe pebbled leather is more allergic to oil than water. Do you have any experience with Box Calf - some ppl have claimed they get blisters from the rain, but I don't understand why so many vintage ones still look so pristine and wouldn't they have also been in contact with rain?
Barenia is a tough one to live through before the patina. The “issue” I think is how these bags have become a luxury item that costs too much for it to look “shabby” and not “elevated”. You look chic on a horse with well patina barenia but stepping out of a Bentley you might look like you woke up without brushing your teeth. I dunno. My own personal aesthetic has never been “bling”. So they suit me fine. As for box leather, I am too scared to carry one because it is the opposite of barenia. The more you wear the box the worse it looks. Barenia and VN are the opposite. The more you wear them to better they look. “Better” I guess isn’t “like new” in this specific conversation. I have a Kelly sellier 32 blistered like box. But I would never buy box. So I am not sure what I have in my hands at the moment. As to why vintage box leather bags aren’t blistering I guess when you carry a Hermes bag way back in the day, or even these days, you wouldn’t often get caught in the rain now would you? 😌 Cars will pick you up and drop you off from one sheltered place to another, no? Some things are really products of their times.
@@OrangeIsTheNewBag Oh no, your kelly sellier 32 blistered? What leather is it? Actually the worn in look is now trending. It would be interesting to see your bag collection or your favourites from it. Seems you are a long time collector.
@@ClaraZeela Chamonix I think. I will film the bag and the leather and upload that soon. There are too many of my bags stored in a few different places for me to show them all at the moment 😅 I’ve been buying designer (“luxury”) handbags since the late 1990s. But mainly started seriously collecting around early 2000s. Prada was amazing at the time. Miu Miu and Fendi too. Really playful and amazing designs. Tom Ford was on fire at Gucci and YSL. Most importantly LVMH was only a few years old and they haven’t ruined the market yet. Maybe one day I can go through all of them one by one ☺️ Are you in HK? Don’t have an after sales service team and craftsperson there? I need some of my hardwares replaced and I have no Hermes near me. Australia is the closest to me but they don’t have after sales service teams in any of the cities their stores are present I don’t think. As for pebbled barenia being more sentient to oil, I think you are right. If you see in this video, there is a permanent mark at the bottom of my Kelly 28 that I suspect is oil. If it had been water it would have disappeared. Since pebbled barenia has more crevices it would be more prone to anything getting caught there and staying on the leather. I don’t know about alcohol stains. But my first reaction would have been to leave it. As I have alluded before, for me staining is part of the long process of the “maturing” of the leather, and the changes in its visual qualities which is part of the fun of the leather for me. Sadly I think the unbelievable prices the market is asking for these bags now would have prevented anyone from having fun with any of it. Very sad. I am curious how H “fixed” yours though? Could you share?
@@OrangeIsTheNewBag yes I am currently in Hong Kong and the after sales is fantastic but usually takes a few months if it’s a local fix up. I believe they may have put a light paint over it to cover the discolouration. It looks okay and you cannot tell unless you look closely. For more heavy duty fix ups I believe they need to send to France . So far the experience is very good
I HAVE NOT MONETIZED THIS VIDEO. UA-cam and Google have.
Is FURLA “luxury”? Is “luxury” luxury? LUXURY is a PROBLEMATIC term.
I love it.
It is chef’s kiss 👌
Love Furla. Have a bag, wallet since mid-200s at least. Well-made, well-designed but I think the brand is better known in Europe than in North America.
I suspect so too. And most vloggers are from the US. I think.
CLARIFICATIONS 1. When I said black barenia is no longer produced, I only know that in terms of bags. Presumably if Hermes is still making saddles for dressage, and if they use barenia for those, they might still be producing black barenia. 2. I said the Kelly 28 was “never carried” while at the same time saying it was carried for 1-2 weeks. What I was supposed to say was that’s it has never been carried ENOUGH, as far as patina is concerned. 3. What you see here comprises of my ENTIRE collection of Hermes Barenia items. (Except one on a canvas Kelly sellier 32 as trimmings).
That belt design is a beauty. It is a pity the conglomerates cutting corners all over the place.
Let’s hope smaller brands won’t keep trying to compete with LVMH in a race they can never win, and take a decisive position in the market where they can provide customers like us with alternatives to LVMH’s brands and prices.
Wow, ask and I shall receive. Ah, I was wondering why the new Barenia didn’t look like the old specimens. Pebbled! Yes like wood. That is what patina does to it. I follow this leather guy called James crane and he took a non treated vegetable tanned bag and has been following its patina process over the last year. Very fascinating….. I know you glossed over the black Barenia as not having the same dynamic character, but from what you showed, I would disagree. The shine, patina, was so much more alive than most black bags I have seen on camera. But was that just the camera ‘fish bowl’ setting you were on? Hah, yet another video of yours I foresee going on repeat. You’re endlessly fascinating.
The black barenia didn’t get a justified amount of time here you are right. I foresee a black barenia dedicated video soon 😆 I’m Google-ing James Crane 😊
Hmmm, I hear a sadness in your voice and in a comment you left somewhere about not being able to wear the clothes and shoes of your youth. (sorry I don’t get to respond all of the time so quickly. My work can get hectic for days upon days on end. And if I feel something deserves a more thorough response I’ll save it for later). I can give you advise but sometimes when ‘strangers’ on the internet give me advise, it seems just a platitude to be repeated with no real meaning. If u don’t really know a person, how can you know what to recommend? So all I will say is this, while a part of me hates my body as I grow old, I love that I’m learning what I actually like to wear, not because it fits or conforms to some ideal or societal expectation. Stupid ridiculous clashing patterns and expensive handbags and loud jewelry upon a base of old disheveled jeans and sweatshirts. Voila. I’m probably luckier than you because I came of age in the grunge of the early 90’s and never cared about fashion till recently. So now I just get to add and play. Not take away. For the stuff that has been taken away in other areas of my life, I consider it a challenge to find things to add in their place. Ramble ramble I know. I’ll stop now. And yes I’m from alaska. Been here for more than 20 years now. Still an outsider. Probably why I like it. Hah.
Always a pleasure to find someone who think deeply about things as I sometimes been accused of. Even when talking handbags! I grew up in the 80s and 90s too. But it took me into my late 20s which is the late 1990s to feel comfortable in my own skin. Luckily I grew into an adult in New Zealand. It was a place of feverish independence. Sir Peter Jackson grew up in the same city as mine and there is a reason why Lord of The Rings in its glorious trilogy could only be made right then and in NZ. It was a magical time here. I could hardly recognize this country today but that’s a whole different conversation. I only realized this when I moved to NYC. How my sense of style is unique and I had NZ to thank. So into my 40s I have maintained the same centre of confidence. This centre shifted as I hit 50. And all the unique personal style I cultivated all of my adult life suddenly no longer works. It is amazing how changed in your body changes so much more.
BTW, I would love to hear more about your work in Alaska, and Alaska itself, IF you are comfortable? As I mentioned elsewhere, it is on bucket list to visit 😌
@@OrangeIsTheNewBag yes finding folks who think deeply is always a bonus out here in the tube. My work? Nothing special really. Just an engineer in the oil industry.

Never would have known without you. so enlightening that Jonathan Anderson isnt some ‘god’ in the fashion scene. He was just building upon something that came before. As is true for most art. But what has me fascinated is the big bad business owning the rights and the stories that they want to tell. ‘Jonathan Anderson. His first design for the company. Isnt he a genius.’ No not really. And when he leaves, some other fresh commodity will get top billing for something equally not ground breaking, but we’ll believe it because they tell us to believe the story. I am fascinated as to why we are fascinated with these people and their designs. And yet here I own 5 puzzle bags because I do.
Well. To be fair, if you look at the Origami Tote, it lacks a certain kind of polish or sophistication. I don’t know how to say it without sounding like I don’t really mean to with my sentence. Simply that pushed for a much bigger arc, Stuart Vevers managed to touch a design touch point. Which as amazing as it is, felt to me a bit unpolished. The way I see it, that’s when Jonathan Anderson came in. Looking at his own design label, his designs under his own banner also lack a sense of elegance and delicacy which makes his Loewe pieces sensational. Perhaps it is all about synergy. Alone they are interesting. But with a team of people under a big business with huge cashflow, certain other things can happen in ways they can’t independently.
I am size 36 without socks and 37 with. These are 37.5 and they fit comfortably with socks. So it seems like they do run a bit small.
6:06 From what I heard from others who are in a position to make comparisons between this Damier Pop material and the classic monogram, the coated canvas for the Damier Pop in 2024 is in fact more supple, thicker, more lush, compared to LV's previous coated canvas. So I am glad to have been able to confirm that I was not just imagining this. The last time their canvas felt this substantial for me was LV Murakami Speedy 30 and that was 20 years ago in 2004. I never revisited LV since, so I can not comment. The only other LV pieces that I have been able to hold in my hands were not until after 2020: The Petit Malle, Virgil Abloh's carrot pouch, and LV x Yayoi Kusama Gaston pouch / bag. The last of which is the absolute worst, and shockingly bad. More on that in a different upcoming video.
Hi Anneke! So great to see another video from you. I have thoughts. But I’m late for work. So will hit you back many many hours in the future.
CORRECTION: The handle drops remain the same for both XL and XXL. The larger tote listed both handle DROP and LENGTH as 26 and 27 cm respectively. While the smaller only listed handle DROP as 26 cm. Making a difference of 1 cm handle DROP between the two sizes. QUESTION: What on earth is a “handle length” that is only 1 cm longer than its drop? Has someone at Loewe mixed up their drafts? 😐 NOTES: There were chatters that as of May 2024 they have renamed the L to XL, and XL to XXL. Which has not clarify things. In fact, quite the opposite. Because now, the XXL consists of TWO different sizes 🫤 To make things more confusing, the dimension listed for the XXL which is 45 x 45 x 45 cm measures the BOTTOM WIDTH. While for the smaller bag, let’s call it the XL for our sanity, they listed the TOP WIDTH of the bag. This tote is MUCH WIDER ON TOP 😶 Any of you understanding this differently? 🤨 Has Loewe always been this messy?
Hello! Currently in the same dilemma of trying to source an early Puzzle... thank you for this super helpful video! Am I right in thinking the original Medium is smaller than the current size 'up' from the small? Could you possibly tell me the dimensions of this one? Thank you!
Oh! I have no idea what the current size up from small is! This is a 29 cm wide!
After a bit of research I think it’s the same! Think the small is the one for me but proving even trickier to find! Thank you 😊
