Hey Kristin, waiting for new video, please do it since your viewers are out there waiting for your amazing presence ❤
It’s actually a new channel since I’m not teaching English any longer. But I’ll finish editing tomorrow. The new channel name is Adventures with Kristin. Coming soon, promise!
Hello Kristin! May I ask through which platforms you're currently teaching? I'd like to take some lessons with you. My English is at an advanced level but I need to practice speaking. I'm actually a teacher too (for German) and I've got my Lingoda interview tomorrow. That's how I found your videos. Kind greetings from Germany!
Thank you for wanting to learn with me. Currently I am not teaching through any platform. But if you’d like to talk about possible private conversations, you can email me kristingrady12 (at) gmail (dot) com to discuss. Best of luck with your interview and I’d love to hear how it goes.
@@KristinGrady Hello Kristin! Thank you for your reply. I'll get back at you later via email about possible 1-on-1 conversational lessons. Thank you so much, I'll let you know how my interview went. Money isn't my priority when it comes to teaching but I'm still curious about Lingoda's hourly pay. Up to this point they've been quite secretive about it. I'm sure I'll find out today. Kind greetings and have a nice week! 🌼
@@Dispatern I Hope you are not disappointed. Talk to you soon.
@@KristinGrady The interview was good and the interviewer was friendly and professional. The pay is half of what I make at my other teaching job but it's fine with me!
@@Dispatern the pay is low and is part of the reason I decided to leave. But I’m glad it went well for you.
I had a complaint made about me at work for use of one word in an email. (Not a racially related word for clarification, just a word someone thought inappropriate). I was told off by my line manager but despite offering to discuss with the complainant, was not allowed. Complainant was allowed to remain anonymous. I had to email the whole circulation list to make an apology. You bet that was the most carefully worded thing ever and that it did NOT include me having done something wrong, rather focused on apologising if offence has been felt and being very happy to talk if anyone wished to. Either anonymous or otherwise in order to resolve. And I did that before said boss could send me a template email to send out. Six years later I’m still pissed about it. And the best part was that a number of people on the mailing list immediately sent me responses off list asking what the hell was going on because the word I had used was total acceptable in context. I’ve learned over the years that if someone offends you to check first if they meant to before coming for their career. It’s so contextual. If someone has otherwise always been lovely and kind, why would they suddenly throw in a slur? It makes no sense. Why not just ask to have a quick word at the end of the class and check. If a teacher then refused or was grumpy or rude or wouldn’t explain then make a complaint. People are so weird. And I think sometimes determined to be offended. I have a friend who is a little like that, she’s great, but after a few bad experiences she’s always expecting to be offended and now sees offence where there is none. It’s exhausting talking her down off the ledge.
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. This happened over 2 years ago and it still annoys me. But it’s just something I chalked up to a misunderstanding between languages. Your situation sounds like something more personal. Isn’t it funny how these small moments in time can have such a large impact? Wishing light and happiness to all those looking for offenses to latch onto.
Thanks for this video - I ve been teaching French through lingoda for 7 years now , and all that you say is true. Well, this kind of job is flexible, and thats the reason why we mostly choose it. Thus, here , the adm team is really kind and fair, which is a very important point, mainly when problems occur...
I never had any issues with the admin team either, so that’s always a good thing. I’m not teaching with Lingoda any longer but enjoyed my time working with them.
Thank you so much. I have just finished my TEFL course, and am starting to look into options for teaching English online. This is really helpful.
I’m glad it helps. Best of luck in your new English teaching career!

Hello. Thank you for your video. I am very new to the online world of teaching and I’m interested in teaching business English. I am wondering if you have any particular formal business English education or as natives it just means we have the ability to deeply connect with the material to understand the nuances and the differences, and therefore qualifies us to teach business English. Do you have any thoughts on that? Thank you.
I am so sorry for you after watching this. Some students are borderline insane. I don't think you said ANYTHING wrong. I know that one person's negative opinion can outweigh thousands of positive opinions. If you taught 1000 students, and 1 student is like this, you have a 99.9% approval rate. She was way out of line, please continue what you do
Thank you for the support and kind words. This happened about 2 years ago now and I still remember feeling so confused. But I am past it and can only continue being me. 😁
Such an amazing and inspirational video.
Thank you for saying that.
Hi, I know this video is a year old but I’m hoping you can answer a question. Lingoda claims you’ll move up a level if you do the super sprint. Is that a reasonable expectation for 60 classes? And how does Lingoda know that if there are no tests to verify student learning? Thanks for any help.
I still reply to messages even though I’m not teaching for them anymore. I believe they are saying that if you take 60 classes, or 60 hours of instruction, then you will have taken enough classes to complete a level and would move up. With that much practice, as long as you review and study between classes, you will definitely show improvement. Which language are you studying?
@@KristinGrady Spanish. I’m Kind of stuck and considering the latest sprint or super sprint. I test anywhere from the A-1 to B2 level depending on if I’ve spent an hour or so reviewing some verbs and numbers. I can read Spanish, I would guess, at about a 5th grade level but an much less than that in hearing & speaking. I’m thinking of shoring up areas I’m weak in on my own and then doing the sprint to complete a B1 level.
@@susanc1179 Getting to a solid B1 is an excellent idea. Most of my English students were between B1-B2 and working hard to progress. It takes longer to move up with each level. It’s very normal to be stronger in one area, like reading for you. I’m also a better reader and writer but need work in listening and definitely speaking.
Hi Kristin, do know know where the attorney general signed your criminal background check? Thanks, I am doing it this week😊
I know I went to the attorney general’s office and filled out a form that was then signed by them. I copied the form and sent everything to be verified and get the apostille stamp. It’s a confusing process for sure, but stay in touch with your contact in China and ask them to be very clear in what you need.
@@KristinGradyThanks so much! 😊😊
Help...I thought it nad to be done by FBI, is state level ok?
Do you mean the background check? Check with your specific contact person at the school. When I applied for an ESL position in South Korea, they wanted it from federal level. Some schools in China accepted just state background checks, which is the minimum. Verify first so you’re not wasting time and money if you don’t need to. Good luck!
@@KristinGrady thanks 😊
One thing that concerns me is the one class per day requirement. How do I make sure I am not booking the class on the same calendar day?
I'm about to start a Lingoda Sprint next month... I have a question... if I have my Zoom camera on is it ok to have a image background vs the room behind me? I think with my working life I will be taking some classes on my 90 minute break at work and that could be in a storage cupboard which I think would be best hidden using a Zoom background image.
Yes, you can definitely use a background. I have done it when my office had a mess in the background. Use either a background or the blur feature and you will be fine. Good luck in the Sprint!

What was your favorite tip.
Some people is insecure that's it. Thanks for this video, it helps me know that I should not get to friedly with students
I think it’s hard to not be friendly, but you must understand to not assume too much. It’s a balance I guess teachers have to learn over time. And you’re very welcome for the video.
Thank you Kristin. I am doing the TESOL certificate iat the University of Georgia. This iinformation was very helpful to me. Will check your other videos out
So happy my video was helpful. Best of luck with the TESOL.
Just came across this and was so upset for you. Great teachers are extremely sensitive. I imagined with horror how this must have felt for you at the time. I rushed to check if you had further videos after this, as it was a year ago. And found with great relief that you are still doing what you love and have bounced back. But I bet you will never never forget such an unfair accusation. All you can do is forgive the woman's mistake and move on.❤🙏
Thank you for understanding how I felt at the time. I won’t forget but moved on and am much more careful about my choice of words with people who might misconstrue what I say. It’s all a learning process.
Please, you would say how I can give my feedback for the teachers? I don't know how I can do this!!!
I believe they send you an email after the class. Then you click on the sentences that say how you feel about that class.
Hi Kristin, Sending love from England. I'm sorry for what you've been through and the feelings. It must be horrible. I'm a Chinese person living in England and got interested in your videos as I'm considering taking German with lingoda. I feel lots of people were brought up with a strong association between guilt and ignorance. Asking for explanations seems to be beyond achieveable. For instance, I was helping with a show backstage. There are a variety of backgrounds, e.g. mandarins speakers who don't speak English, Cantonese speakers who don't understand Mandarin so on and so forth. It's often the case that I told someone lots of things and he or she doesn't even speak the language I spoke. This person still nodded along as if everything made sense. Here, your student did not understand the social implication of what you said and ended up reporting you. I hope you resolve it asap and feel better soon.
Everything worked out ok but I appreciate you sending love! Good luck with German.
Sorry to hear that. I m also Chinese. Probably there are some misunderstandings. We re not that direct or outspoken in our culture. Maybe she experienced discrimination before that makes her sensitive. Most important when u re not doing it, explains the situation n be at rest. We cannot avoid all relationship mishaps, be free n continue to do what u like.
It was a misunderstanding and I learned from my experience. Cultures are different and handle situations in their own way. I hope she wasn’t discriminated against and has continued her language learning.
It's my first time to see a lingoda teacher review, very nice advice. Glad to know that teachers love questions. Agree that preparation in advance helps learning a lot. I m at a level in which i feel very comfortable , they don't have a higher level. Hope soon they have c1 & c2 levels.
Keep up your studies and asking those questions. If you’re at C1 or C2, try finding someone to chat with. General conversation can be so helpful to improving your language skills. Best of luck!
Lingoda is a rubbish company. They only care about how to steal money from their students, doesn't care other things
I have been learning French for several years. Private and group classes have pros and cons depending on your level and goal. As for me, preferred group lessons. I enjoy the atmosphere and learning from others, including my fellow students. I reserve private lessons for areas where I need additional attention, such as relative pronouns. Overall, I've used group lessons 80% of the time and private lessons 20% of the time. Yes, Kristin is correct. The holy grail is a private group class where I paid for a group lesson but only signed up to attend. There are exceptional but rare!!
I think it’s time for me to refresh my French studies and advance beyond A2 or so. I studied in high school and some college courses but not enough speaking practice.
Everyone has their preferences, but I agree with your 80/20 mix. Happy language learning.
Y,1Տ
It's not disrepectful to have microphone and camera off. Also some people might go there together because of money, or lack thereof. Or only one computer, or probably both. Also I am not comfortable with my face.
I do not believe that any of your reasons are wrong, but how can you have a language learning class with no interaction? Listening only will not be enough to practice and improve your language skills. And sometimes I’m not comfortable with my face either and I must have the camera on. 😁
@@KristinGrady I think cameras should only be on if people are comfortable with it, or it is necessary, and microphones if you want to ask a question or reply.
Thenk you Mis I Like Iour Lesons 😍👍
how get lingoda app, create, dowload and instal for using this app?
The Lingoda app is available in the Apple App Store. Not sure about Google Play since I dont have an Android. Just type Lingoda and it should come up. It’s not recommended to take classes on the app since it can be difficult to write for certain classes. It’s good for booking classes and checking to see what classes are available.

Hi, do we get the option of learning different English accents on Lingoda?
Absolutely. There are English speaking teachers from all over the world.
@@KristinGrady Ok, are the lesson names very easy to find like "British accent for daily routine" or "American accent for shopping"?
@@Frag_Limit There are a few British vs American words and pronunciations, but the rest of the classes are the same materials just taught by people with different accents.
Hi kristin, I'm a new teacher and I wanna know how to book a lot of classes because on the calendar they are always taken Second question in my country we are free to be a freelancer without any taxes what would I write in this case Id tax
The amount of classes available depends on the language you teach. I found at the end it was extremely difficult to get enough English classes on my calendar. In the previous years I worked nearly 30-40 hours weekly. My best advice to find classes is to check the computer schedule constantly. You must be quick! I’m not a tax expert, so I’m not sure what you should write if you freelance. This is something I always ask a professional tax person about because here in the USA we do pay taxes on freelance work.
@@KristinGrady thanks a lot ,I'm a French teacher and I keep on checking every 4- 5 hours I thought that it was a hack to book
@@shymshine4737 it used to be, but then I think there were many more teachers all looking for those teaching hours. Don’t give up!
@@KristinGrady so I keep on checking that's the trick now
@@shymshine4737 keep on checking and be willing to take the classes you can find and actually teach.
Hello I have been accepted in the interview and now I have to pass the teacher test. I wanna know if I fail the test what would be happening?
I’m not sure what happens if you fail the test. I don’t work as a Lingoda employee and do not know what their guidelines are like. My suggestion is to choose something you feel comfortable teaching and prepare a short lesson for the time they told you, usually 5-10 minutes. If they gave you a specific teaching topic, then research and prepare your lesson from there. Good luck!
good
I’m glad you found the video helpful.
It takes a heroic effort, because the classes you need aren't available when you need them. Scheduling virtually forces you to fail.
I’m not teaching with Lingoda at this time and did not have access to see what classes are available from the student’s view. The Sprint doesn’t specify which classes you must take. But I understand if you have a specific goal and can’t get those classes it must be very frustrating.
@@KristinGrady This point needs clarification, because it is not what is being reported by other students. They are saying that when you take a Sprint at a certain level, you have to take all the courses at the level. At the very least, the scheduling requires you to take them out of natural order. At worst, the courses becomes steadily less and less available unless your schedule out of your normal time availability.
@@slicksalmon6948 the perfect goal is to take all of the classes in a certain level from start to finish, but that can be difficult getting the availability. It is true you may have to take them out of order to make sure you get the required classes completed. If you have further concerns, I suggest contacting support at Lingoda. I wish you the best of luck with your classes.
I’m not sure if you or the leaners you’ve been in contact with have read Lingoda’s TnC on the Sprint or not, but it’s stated pretty clearly there that: the customer is entitled to change his/her individual learning level at any point, and as many times as desired, without any effect on their qualification for the Cashback. I suppose your friends were talking about the Certificate, which requires a 90% completion of the course to achieve, and is completely different from the Cashback.
@@IrenesCloset_TQ Yes, you are correct. However, some users have nonetheless reported difficulties taking classes in the proper order because of class unavailability at the desired time. This contrasts with a university experience where the schedule is set in stone and the classes flow logically. Imagine, for example, that you want to take classes at 10am. You have to select from classes that are available at that time, and the possibilities may not include the class you want or need. So, you’re forced to take subjects out of logical order. This may not be a crushing restriction, but it’s something students should know in advance.
How difficult are the Business English classes? I am a little worried since I read that they only go up to B2… Would you also recommend them for fluent speakers?
I haven’t taught any in a little while, but I don’t think they’re too difficult to understand. If you have a good teacher, they take the ideas presented in the class and have students practice those ideas, phrases, or concepts. And I’ve found that most teachers are excellent.
Thanks a lot ,I have been invited to an interview to become a French teacher and they proposed to present a lesson in 10mins to be hired How could I make a good impression? And should I follow the same plan and present the information in the lesson?
If they let you decide which topic to teach a lesson on, choose something you like and are comfortable with. It could be a reading assignment with some pre-teaching of vocabulary or a grammar lesson where you teach a grammar point and then allow the student to practice with written answers and then spoken answers. Just keep it simple.
@@KristinGrady thank you a lot I have another problem, today I didn't see the link to the interview and I was waiting for them to send me a link. I've received an email to say that I was late and I must choose another day. I sent an email to explain that I hadn't any intention to skip the interview and that I was waiting for the email with a link. I risk to be not accepted because of this or it happens because I'm afraid that they would make a judgement that I'm not able to manage online tools. I'm waiting for your answer Madame
@@shymshine4737 If they offered you a chance to reschedule, then don’t worry. Many times I have waited for a link or missed an appointment online because I didn’t receive a link. Everyone makes mistakes and you can learn to use online tools. Choose another day since you already told them you made a mistake. We all make mistakes, even great teachers.

Thank you.
You’re welcome! I’m happy my review was helpful. Do you have any questions?
Not at all as teachers change all the time. It's interesting viewing from a teacher's perspectives as I'm a student, I only hear about students complaining teachers not giving any value to their students. 😅 I wished I could do the super sprint but I don't have the budget. Haha

I am an English teacher but non native speaker. May I apply to teach in china? thanks
I am not an expert, but I do believe you have a better chance of applying for jobs in China now than several years ago. There is a high demand for English teachers but many have left the country since 2020. There have also been government changes to their education policies. Check out this video for more details. ua-cam.com/video/hgxXGGYEPZE/v-deo.html
I just want you to be prepared for some possible discrimination since you are not a native speaker. It might not be fair but many Chinese schools still want the native speaker and direct recruiters to hire only native speakers. Best of luck in your job search! Keep us posted!

Not sure how to respond to this.
I think it’s so disrespectful to not have your camera on when you’re being taught something. How would you feel if the teacher didn’t turn their camera on? I’ve just finished a class tonight where the 4 other students had their cameras off. Students actually do themselves a disservice by doing that. The teacher would tend to interact more with me because she could see me and I definitely got more out of the lesson. It’s also nice to get to know other students as you’re often in the same classes or have to do speaking exercises with each other but it’s hard to engage with other students when all they are is black screens. You’ll get so much more out of your lessons if you turn your screens on, trust me 😊
I agree with you 100%!!! I have to admit I think I do interact more with the students I can see. Even if I am trying to be fair to all students. I understand keeping it off if the signal isn’t very strong or stable, or for some it’s a religious reason, but other than that, put it on. You will get so much more from the lesson as you stated. Thanks for your comment. 🖥😉
Lovely presentation and wonderful sharing. I especially like your tone and speed. It is clear and nice. Amazing and sweet voice too. Thx, Kristin.
I’m so happy find my tips helpful! Please share with others if you think my videos might be helpful. And I appreciate the compliment about my voice and speed of speaking. Thank you!
Hi, Kristen, glad in seeing your reply. A question is that why couldn't I find you in any of the available classes recently? Which levels are you teaching normally? Look forward to your reply and your tuition. Have a beautiful day!
@@christam8183 I have not taken many classes in the month of June. I was working on another project and there weren’t many available for my time zone. I’ve also been sick and had a bad head cold and a scratchy voice. Looking to add some classes for July!
@@christam8183 I usually teach B1-C1 during the hours of 9:00 am-4:00 pm EST. Not sure where you currently live but that’s New York City time.
Pls do not feel too sad.
That is very nice of you to say that. I think the only thing that makes me sad is that I may have made her feel hurt. And I am more careful with my words. Thank you for your kindness.
Hi, Kristin, Completely understood your feeling. I am a Chinese myself and I do think that Chinese students over-reacted. It might be her past experience (been teased by anyone before) make her being so offensive.
I have a better understanding now and try not to say things that students might find offensive. We are always learning something new about people.
I could not find you in those classes slots in Lingoda. Really look forward to attend your lessons. I will definitely turn my video on.
Thanks for putting your video on! We love that. I’m not teaching too much right now due to private teaching and many Lingoda teachers scheduling classes before I get to choose them. Currently, I teach during the afternoon EST, so not sure how that relates to where you live. Hope to see you soon!
Thx for your sharing, Kristen.
You are welcome Chris.
