This is not music This is better than music
Are yall slow? There literally isn't a single comment that says this isn't music. SMH, this is why people dont like you guys.
8:45 is what i imagine sex with someone you truly love feels like😻
Black metal
This is much better than 'black metal' music
this piece IS music because i am unable to refute the definition i was taught in high school music class ( early 1970s) That is to say it is organized sound, as I was taught, organized I might add, by some kind of creative intelligence. Bu that is a very broad definition and covers even Cage's "4 minutes 33" Whether it is good or great music is entirely another question I have a composition degree, I was an orchestral double bass player for 25 years and I have a trained ear. So i understand this piece HOWEVER I am now over 60. I am old and tired. life is too short to be bombarded by Shostakovich's angst. I gorged on it in my 20's now 40 year ago. but now no longer. If poor Shostakovich were a happy man who composed not a note he would have been much better off
Interesting comment section here My 2 cents.. if it's making everyone think this much, then I think regardless if you consider this music or not, it has effectively done its job. 👍 I do agree that Shostakovich's style changed over time as he distanced himself from some of his earlier compositional tendencies
Penis music at its finest
2:14 cello concerto no 1 cadenza final section
I’m not sure what all the fuss is about. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. The score is beastly!
Those who believe this isn’t music will explode when they hear Michel Finnissy
This recording is astounding. Fight me🔥
A complex piece that needs an attuned ear. If I watched a Spanish TV show, the dialogue would mean little to me because I've not learned Spanish. This is a piece that makes sense, if you are familiar with the idiom and have developed listening stamina.
İlk dəfə qulaq asdim əla əsərdir. Muasir dovr ucun yazib dahi Sostakovik👏👏
I like this-the opening reminds me of the Prokovief 3rd sonata.
Whats the time signature of the first part of this piece
sometimes common and sometimes 12/8
It's probably 4/4(12/8) , so common time but it makes triplet easier to notate as they are commonly used
so much more personality than his first sonata
Insane <3
shostakovich's first sonata or prokofiev's last?
I love Shostakovich, in general, but this isn’t one of his best works.
4:10 A wild shark appeared
Me struggling to find the people who say “this isn’t music”
there are so many similarities between this guy and anthheil that it's crazy, such a thought provoking avante-garde piece composed at the mere age of 19!
Despite the "this is not music" comments, I still do believe this is music.
i agree with u
Musica stupefacente! Adoro Shostakovich.
Not a part of the "this isn't music" comments lol. Saying some shit like that is crazy at this day and age. It isn't even that radical. There are a bunch of contemporary pieces I don't consider music. There IS indeed a line where it stops being music. But this obviously is music lol, but it doesn't mean it's "good". My problem with it is not the language used. But it does feel directionless to me on a first hearing. Tonal ambiguety can lead to adding too much fat to the music and making the form hard to follow. Also some stuff really seems forced. Him trying to show off how "modern" he could be for the time. To me it just seems pretentious. I much more prefer Prokofiev.
Imagine saying "god doesn't exist" in a church in during the 15th century, literally the same thing. Religious loons will point to their doctrine, proving nothing, and getting their t*ts up about the blasphemy of ruining their safe space of nonsense.
@@Whatismusic123 What?

@@Whatismusic123 read books about modern music and stop saying that modern art is "a cult." It is not a cult.
I disagree. Music doesn't have any kind of frontier. There is no line.
Personally, I find it enthralling !
Technically its amazing. It must be listened to as a piece. Not merely as a few notes Ots called music appreciation...
Love Shostakovich. What a fearless and genuine composer.
So good
Это-Прокофьеву)
Sounds like Prokofiev's 3rd sonata
he must have liked what he composed here because you can hear his 2nd piano concerto throughout and that came 14 years later.
For all those who think this isn't music you definitely need to hear more than Liszt... I can't even imagine what will happen if you hear Schoenberg or even Ligeti.
Depends how you define music, but if it’s just a collection of any sounds then yes this is music, but the so is a child banging aimlessly on a piano. This isn’t good. There is nothing here that can resonate with any emotion of me. No matter how many times I listen to it. It’s just bad and frankly it just seems snobbish and childish to pretend like there’s a deep meaning to any of this.
Just because there exists trash worse than garbage, doesn't mean said garbage doesn't fit right in there with the rest of the trash. Liszt is also garbage.
Stockhausen 💀
@@Whatismusic123your taste in music is horrible. I don't like Liszt and this isn't my favorite piece either but it's good and not at all garbage
@@actualman908 This is not a question of taste
Seems like he had already been through a lot
Wow, it sounds so modern, sometimes jazzy too
Wild, dark, and beautiful!
This is so much better than the 1st Sonata, Shostakovich really matured
Sounds like a Prokofiev sonata to me
The beginning sounds quite similar to the beginning of Prokofiev's Sonata 3
If I recall correctly, the "Living Presence" recordinga were all made usinf 35 mm. magnetic film, rather than conventional magnetic tape. This made a HUGE difference in the quality of the finished product. The legendary Virgil Fox (a pupil of Dupre) made some of his finest recordings using this technology, under the direction of the late band leader Robert Fine. Not until Fox made his last two commercial recordings for Crystal Clear Records, using both digital and direct-to-disc technology, did Fox equal, let alone exceed, the quality of such recordings as this one!
Nice production. These extraordinary historic organ performances by legendary artists give quite a perspective on different interpretations of the pieces performed, especially this well-known concert piece.
Plot twist: Everyone was just mad that he said UA-cam's ContentID engine can be beneficial.
The music starts around 5:44
I think you meant 0:01
Thanks. My immediate thoughts: a composition by Prokofiev's "little brother".
Says the guy who thinks Debussy was the last composer ever.
Wrong, it doesn't start anywhere.
@@Whatismusic123 Wrong, it starts at 0:01.

CEO of Music here: this is music.
CEO of your largest competitor: disagreeing in our perspectives and having a conversation about it instead of blindly supporting the artist to look intelligent is what makes art "art." The fallacy of blindly supporting the artist to look intelligent and convincing your mind that something is music when your gut knows it isn't is that it feels like a high-IQ alpha-male move, but it's actually like lowest-IQ position out there.
@@tchaffman Seems like someone is falling in the fallacy of calling everything a fallacy 🥰
I would believe those who say this isn't "music" give the word limited meaning. I personally feel the attempt to explore the essence of sound. Music is sound, but is sound music too? Then, regarding atonality, I do agree this isn't atonal. I definitely like it. I would not place Beethoven on the other side because there's no opposite side. Shostakovic wouldn't have been Shostakovic without LvB, JSB, WAM and all. Thanks for posting, looking for more!
No you're wrong
Every time I went on exam I play this musix
It's so sad that Shostakovich was restrained mainly to the requirements of the Soviet Union during his career, and while he was a fantastic composer, he had to walk a fine line of expression and keeping to the party's demand, which if not walked correctly could've literally meant his death. A beautiful bird caged
well soviet union granted him a home and a salary, and I think we all should thank Stalin to make Shosta write some ot the most miraculous symphonic music ever heard on this earth 😜✊
@@iacobellusthe government also killed several hundreds of fellow musicians, some of whom Shostakovich had known 🤪🤪😐
@@that_oneguy_yt6329 sure he did, that's awful …
Yeah, they should have just prevented him from composing at all, as he was clearly incompetent at composing anything close to music.
@@Whatismusic123 this is SOOO TRUE 🤪🤪🤪😐
I don't know how anyone could think this isn't music without also admitting that they have the artistic intellect of a 16th century noble who believes himself an authority of music but is really a bloated and harmonically miserly snob. This stuff makes perfect sense to me and, at points absolutely beautiful.
I couldn't agree more, this is such a wonderful piece.
You're conflating 2 different people and pretending they are the same, just so you can absolve their opinion. Not everyone that disaggrees with this garbage is a snob. In fact, *you* are the snob, who thinks everyone who disagrees with you, is not holier than thou.
