The song "Child of the King" was written by Cindy Walker, a talented American songwriter and singer, in 1961. It beautifully portrays the transformative journey from a life of sin to redemption, emphasizing God's compassion. Over the years, it has been performed by various artists, including the Gaither Vocal Band, whose renditions have helped cement its popularity in gospel music.
Cindy Walker, born on July 20, 1918, in Mart, Texas, came from a musically gifted family. Her grandfather authored the hymn “Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand,” and her mother was a skilled pianist. Cindy’s professional career began at the age of 7 when she performed as a singer and dancer in a Christmas pageant. By the age of 12, she had written her first song, “Dusty Skies.” At 16, she was dancing full-time in a club owned by famed theater impresario Billy Rose. During this time, she also wrote “Casa de Mañana,” which became her first hit and a theme song for orchestra leader Paul Whiteman.
The Cathedral Trio-composed of Bobby Clark, Glen Payne, and Danny Koker-was formed in 1963 at the Cathedral of Tomorrow in Akron, Ohio. In 1964, they expanded to a quartet with the addition of bass singer George Younce. For their first seven years, they performed and toured with evangelist Rex Humbard, the church’s pastor. In 1969, Glen Payne and George Younce transitioned the Cathedrals into an independent entity. Although they went through a number of changes throughout the 80s and 90s, there is just something special that I like about this line-up. Of course I'm sure we all know the bass singer (Younce) and lead singer (Payne), but the song also features Roger Horne (tenor) and Roy Tremble (baritone) with Lorne Matthews on the piano.

This song is SO much harder to sing than you'd think! Each part has their own lyrics and all four parts sing together. It's like trying to sing the Halleluiah Chorus. :) Always loved the Happy Goodmans! :D
