King Krule: Border Line Chord Progression Analysis
It seems like the song bounces between being in the key of Bm and Gm.
Bm7 (79777x) // Bbm7 (68666x) (think of it as a Db with a Bb in the bass)
[ Ebm7b5 (x6767x) // Dm7b5 (x5656x) ] // Gbm7 (24222x) // A7 (5756xx)
The Dm7b5 is almost like the Tristan chord from the composer Wagner's play of the same name. There is also a lot of chromatic voice leading that ties these seemingly distant chords together. I like to think of the Bbm7 functioning similar to Db7, which is the secondary dominant to Gbm7.
The whole thing is building progressive tension finally resolving to the Gbm7 chord. But how do we explain the Ebm7b5 chord? Well, m7b5s can be thought of as rootless dom9 chords. If we think of it this way, these chromatically descending m7b5 chords are acting like a classic tritone substitution. Think of them from their root as going Bb9 // A9.
At least A9 is in the key of Bm. Wow, that was convoluted. Not sure how much is true or just insanity. Why are you reading this?
Fun fact: to include the Tristan chord in your music, it's just using a m7b5 chord that's a m6 away from any minor chord. For example, Fm7b5 // Am

    Great video mate. Very late to comment but have you got any advice for where to put it in your chain? Ive tried it at the front and the end but still struggling to completely dial in what im looking for. Im using a Jazzmaster and have had trouble getting the tone right, it feels a bit wooly. Have got a fairly simple eq which helps a little

    • @eric_james_music
      @eric_james_music 27 днів тому

      Yeah, I put it near the front, like 3rd out of 8. I do (random pedal first) > reverb > Lofi junky > Delay > overdrive > fuzz > EQ. What works for me is keeping the volume on the pedal below half, and using my amp to makeup the volume drop. Makes the static noise less loud. It really shines with an overdrive tho, you can cut through the compression a bit more. Edit: since the pedal has a built in compressor, that’s why it sounds wooly. I usually play with the bridge pickup and boost my treble. Sometimes I cut out mid-low 200-400 hz with my EQ pedal and boost 3.2k

    everything you do is a balloon is kinda locrian. the main chord progression is a chromatic mediant movement from Am7 to Cm7, the minor third of the latter being a tritone from the root. and they use that E flat note over the Am7 chord occasionally. though IDK if you'd call it full blown locrian. i guess it's probably behaving more like a blue note.

However for accuracy it’s likely: D U D (muted: D U D U) D D U. While this video is correct, there's a reason why he plays the other strings when he plays power chords. If you watch him play live, he doesn't do a usual power chord shape (index on root, ring on 5th and pinky on octave,) he does what I like to call the "Cobain chord" because he plays power chords with his index and ring, but his ring finger bars (or barres?) over the 5th and octave. Kurt never played power chords with his pinky finger like everyone else does. The sus4 is totally unintentional by Kurt; when he bars over the 5th and octave, his ring finger accidentally hits the string below the octave string, which is the reason why (as you stated in the video) he plays it subtly, because he is accidentally hitting the string below. Not only is this weird Cobain chord shape in Smells Like Teen Spirit, it is also in ALL of Nirvana's music because of the way Kurt would play power chords. The Art Of Guitar channel explains this more in depth than I could ever, so I highly recommend his video: ua-cam.com/video/_M9QTotI-bo/v-deo.html Otherwise, nice ear you have there to notice the sus4!

      just listened again, great ear. he's strumming the open e B G strings on an upstroke between the two chords, mostly as a rhythmic passage. Green Day uses this trick in the song American Idiot in the main riff of the verse. Kurt also uses this on plenty of songs I believe. I do it unconsciously b/c I usually just pay attention to the strumming pattern, but it is interesting that these notes are completely out of key, yet add so much character to the song. gonna pin this comment, thank you

    When I studied your idea, I noticed that if we also make the same 9b5 for the (inaudible) fifth degree, we get a total of 10 notes, which together form the 9b5 chord for the (inaudible) fifth degree of the combined major/minor scale. So e.g C9b5 + G9b5 = D mixed maj/min scale. I think this is really interesting. I think you have found something really meaningful. And some wants believe it or not, the number five is very important in esoteric texts (I have to say that so are many others, but number five may have a special position.). ;)

    • @eric_james_music
      @eric_james_music 9 місяців тому

      haha i know what you mean, I always see certain numbers reappearing but I know our human brain is always looking for patterns! Now that's a cool idea about starting one on the 5th interval and seeing how the scales blend. I'm curious to hear if you compose anything using those ideas. as far as mixed maj/minor scales go, the mixolydian b6 is one of my favorites. it emphasizes the borrowed subdominant feel. i.e A minor resolving to E major

      I thought it was general convention to stop at the 16th harmonic since that’s when they start to get out of the range of human hearing in volume. also, do you not find it uncanny that the first couple of harmonics make a major chord? or that the blues use a b7 in the tonic (yes i know that's an approximation but they use the harmonic 7th in blues a capella singing sometimes and so do barbershop quartets). I realize the series goes on infinitely, but there is a definite threshold at which humans can no longer perceive it

    Great video. It's even better cos it sounds nothing like Kid for today. Not that it's not the right chords, it just sounds totally different on guitar, being that original is so 'atmospheric'

      Thank you! Yeah the original is so chill that I didn’t expect to find such a spicy/tense chord like the minor 6 to be in it

      yeah i might upload this version as a demo. but i'm redoing everything cause i lost the original tracks somehow in logic. so ill rerecord then mix master and put it on the album that i'm releasing next year. this version was an experiment putting isotope vinyl on it and tryna make it sound like a warped record. i felt like this song had that vibe so i went with it

      @colepepper43 Рік тому

      @@eric_james_music it definitely has the vibe that’s for sure. I’ve been meaning to check out izotope for my own stuff sometime. Looking forward to hearing this when it’s done.
