Fly6 Pro Review: The Ultimate Cycling Safety Camera?
In this video, I dive deep into the Fly6 Pro, a rear-facing bike camera that doubles as a safety light. As a long-time user and advocate for cycling safety, I’ve been relying on the Fly6 for years. Whether you’re a commuter, racer, or weekend warrior, this device could be a game-changer for your rides.
I’ll walk you through the features, how it has performed in real-world scenarios, and why it might be the most essential piece of tech for any cyclist. Plus, I share some tips on how to get the most out of it and discuss if it’s truly worth the investment.

I'm currently in the market for a new bike (well, will buy used but..) And a cheapish gravel bike to mostly commute with or to drive into forest roads with would be my ideal. My concerns mostly are: 1. Would there be cheap enough options to feel like I don't need to be constantly scared of it being stolen? Feel like this is important for commuter bikes. 2. How good of a rack could I get? I do kinda want the ability to actually carry stuff on the bike rather than in a backpack like I did with my previous bike.
The used bike market is a buyer’s market right now. You can probably get something pretty cheap. I’d look to see if it’s got mounting eyelets on the seat stays/chain stays (or bosses near the dropouts). Those will give you the most rack options.
Thanks for sharing your story , I can totally relate .
Why can't they make the battery user replaceable? Everything else about the unit seems good. I've owned multiple Fly6 CE and one Gen 3. The Gen 3 is definitely inferior as a light source. I've replaced two batteries in the Fly6, but it's anything but easy to do. Their customer support still falls short in many ways. If the unit wasn't so expensive they could just be discarded. They are made in China so I suspect the manufacturing cost is maybe $50 each.
All fair points to be sure. It sure would be nice to be able to replace the battery. It gets 7 hours now. But who knows how long that will last?
@@TheCommutist You think you’re pretty smart, don’t you, Trebek? What with your Dago moustache and your greasy hair!
Wow...pretty fancy safety camera. I have to admit, I felt a little dizzy...but this type of camera got you covered for any incidents, which we hope and pray doesn't happen, cycle on Ivor! ❤👍🏻🙏🏻🙌🏻
I'm retired, but considering getting an ebike for light grocery shopping, as well as just pleasure riding. I live in north-central Florida and it's basically flat around here. I have chronic knee issues from years of martial arts training, so an ebike is appealing. I've tried riding my older road bike (Trek) and even after fairly short rides (20 miles) can feel pain in my knees after. I've been looking at the ebikes offered by Specialized (there is a local shop that sells them), and I'm pretty impressed with both the Globe Haul ST and the Turbo Vado models. I haven't decided yet if I need to extra carry capacity of the Globe Haul. Besides, it's beastly hot now (August) and I'm waiting for the fall cooldown before I decide. Thanks for the informative video.
The other factor to consider, I think, is position. The Vado isn’t quite road bike aggressive, but it’s certainly more forward than the haul. The Vado will handle a little more like a traditional bike, where the haul will feel clunkier in the turns. I think the Vado is more fun to ride but the haul is definitely more versatile/utilitarian.
Thanks for sharing. Saftey is #1 more safety more kmts.Make you visible
Sorry to hear about your accident, hope you are back on the saddle!
I am, now!
what was your w/kg when you were putting in 15k miles per year?
At the best just north of 5. I’ll probably be back at that volume soon but nowhere near the w/kg
@@TheCommutist And you relied on TrainerRoad's plans to get to that level? Or were you mostly just a joy rider?
@ammanuelroberts5965 TrainerRoad. I’m back on it now too, and it’s gotten *way* better. I’m working on a (not sponsored) video about all the new features. But basically, adaptive training + red light green light and a complete overhaul of their plans have been a huge improvement. I had 2 major crashes in 6 months - hit by a car requiring double knee surgeries, hit by a deer breaking my neck. And I’m now 6 months out from that and already back to where I was before getting hit by the car.
@@TheCommutist Cool, I'll definitely tune in.
I commute 3-4 times a week. Use to do it on a road bike now on a hybrid/gravel/flat bar bike. And loving it. In addition to the reasons you mentioned: (1) more upright riding position makes it easier to look over your shoulder to check traffic (2) sitting more upright promotes better vision when riding (3) feel more relaxed on the bike (4) wider tyres provide a bit more grip on all surfaces and weather conditions. Lastly running tyres like Specialized Pathfinders, have a fast centre strip and knobs on the sides, giving you the best of both worlds. Still feel quite fast.
I love pathfinders
Thanks very much for sharing your story.Your enthusiasm in the face of adversity is inspiring. And wow 10-15,000 miles a year. .Balance in life is essential..it sounds like you've found the right path to a lifetime of great living.More content Please.
You think you’re pretty smart, don’t you, Trebek? What with your Dago moustache and your greasy hair!
I work in ebike delivery, absolutely right mindset you got there about road safety
Awesome. I love e-bikes. They’re getting so many more people out on 2 wheels!
One of the first things, my mother ever told me when I started riding a bike in the road was to pretend that I was invisible
Great advice
You are doing well Ivor, we can tell you love helping others with similar injuries and how to deal. Good safety information for all those cyclist out there. So glad neither of you were hit by that drunk driver in that truck. 🤨🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing the great safety tips while biking. Happy that nobody got hurt from the drunken driver.. so scary!
I do not carry a siren or mace. I carry a 9mm Sig with 2 extra mags cocked and locked.
We were so glad you survived this pretty scary accident. Lots and lots of good info here Ivor! You are very comfortable on video (talent) some humor thrown in there too. 😉 Good thing you know lots of lawyer stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing the great info
What?! A deer as well? 😢
Yeah… that was a few months ago now. I didn’t really tell many people
What a year you All had. We heard about the deer incident....but Wow, seeing it from your "go pro" visual, you're So lucky and not only with the deer but the car that hit you. Prayers for healing and God's protection over you. Enjoy your family and life out there in beautiful CA. 😉❤Also...Ivor you make great videos! 🎶🎼🎥🎬
Oh deer.
How long have you had that in your pocket? About as long as the emergency googley eyes?
Oh my goodness! What a year! I wish you a swift and full recovery!
It was a doozy, for sure. Finally starting over.
Roadbike for road. City bike for commuting. I use it in winter for training up 16 ,% grades for vo2 and more . City is a little heavy but its a fantastic bike lol And yes my wife says i can buy a gravel bike . Which itll be a little quiker to work lol. Btw.im 54 just having fun staying in shape lol🚲🍺
Im riding a Tero X which is rad. It’s class 3 with dual suspension. So if I put effort in it will do 28 mph and the comfort is unmatched with dual suspension. But it won’t haul much. When I tested this Haul ST bike I decided to buy it as well. Had I known about it I might have bought it instead of Tero X. Tero X is pretty sick though. 190mm dropper, a bell, knobby tires and dual suspension- it’s hard to beat as a commuter.
I’m waiting for Haul ST to arrive. It will be sick. I will out a tripod and scope on the bike and go to the ocean. And a boombox so I can listen to electro French music. And some drinks. And a snack. And extra layers.
That Tero x sounds sweet. How does it do on mtb trails?
@@TheCommutist it can do MTB trails, for the novelty I suppose. The linkage is simpler than a focused MTB, so at high speeds I noticed the rear sort of losing the plot. And the racks and fenders, and 60 lb weight, don’t make it the best tool for the MTB trail. But as a fire road or slower adventure bike it works. For me, there is no other bike that is class 3 28mph with rear suspension. It’s very smooth on the road. It goes through the battery on full assist…..same as all the others. There’s no magic power solution for 28 mph.
What brand and model is your gravel bike?
It’s a specialized Diverge, but not the latest generation.
I agree & have long-planned to take this step when I can afford a 2nd bike. I'm currently on a great steel single speed _Wabi Classic_ w/ 28mm tires here on the crappy SF Bay Area roads.
Steel is real.
Single speed with Bay Area hills? Your legs must be jacked! 😮
Love the vid and editing! Congrats to your wife for smashing the PR! I have both, Metcalf Rd and Quimby Rd on my list of local climbs to tackle.
Nice editing! Were you shooting with a cell phone camera? looks way better than the regular gopro wide angle footage.
Nope. This is GoPro hero 8 footage with some color grading in davinci resolve. :)
Did you get hit on your globe?! Hope you are healing!
No. Different bike. I had filmed and edited this before I got hit. It’s a slow process.
My solution was to pick where I wanted to live based on the commute. I don’t think id have much energy for work if I rode 30 miles. And then I’d have no time to spend with family if I spent another 2 hour riding home after work.
Makes sense. That wasn’t an option for me. I can’t afford to live closer. As it is, my place is too small for all the kids (and dogs)!
@@TheCommutist yes, I suppose I have the luxury of being young and without those responsibilities! I hope to keep it that way though 😊
Thanks for the great review. My commute is about 12 miles but includes multiple VERY steep gravel/dirt hills. How does the bike do off-road and on extremely steep hills?
I’ll give it a try once I can ride again. I suspect it would do ok going up. I don’t know how it would do going *down* steep dirt. It’s so heavy you’ll build momentum pretty quickly.
I really like this e-bike. I saw it at a grocery store and didn’t recognize it as a recognize it as a specialized because they have been using mid-drive hubs for a while now and due to the very low key branding. I have a 2016 Specialized Turbo-X that has a rear wheel hub. This is one of their first e-bikes. I love it and continue to love it, although the temptation to upgrade is there, especially because the battery is definitely not at 100% anymore. I find that instead of riding with less effort, I ride at the same intensity, but arrive to places in a faster time. I try to lower my effort in order to arrive to locations not as tired or sweaty, but for me it is hard to do. Thanks for the video, this one is one of the best ones out there to really showcase the usability of e-bikes and how they can be used as an alternate means of travel as well as lower the amount of vehicles on the road. Now if drivers would be nicer and not try to kill every biker out there because they think all are jerks, that would make for better and more enjoyable rides.
Yeah… and even when they’re “nice”, they’re distracted and/or make terrible decisions.
I test rode one of these on "5" on flat and was impressed with the acceleration. Is it possible to get a chip or something to override the top speed? Is the bike still limited to 28mph when going downhill? Cheers
I don’t know anything about hacking the bike, but you can definitely go faster than 28, it’s just that the motor stops adding power above 28mph.
I'm here after riding to the store and back in the dark and discovering that, especially when mixing in trails along the way, I discovered I could use some lighting tips. Mine is mounted on the bike. Super bright and effective. Great tail and brake lights. But. I definitely wished I had a helmet lights. Some of my trails are squirrely. Like one has a zig zaggy bridge. I wished I'd had a light on my helmet to cover direct forward. I had to slow waaaaay down compared to going through that area, which I know well, because I was out riding my light since it was zig zagging with the turns. Having that AND the helmet light so I can illuminate straight ahead too in that spot would have been nice.
Yeah…the ability to see where you’re looking is nice, even if the bike isn’t pointed that way.
Love my gravel bike. 2022 Kona Rove DL. I’m running Maxis Receptors 47mm and it’s a very comfortable bike. I even did a fund raiser century ride on it a couple weekends ago. I was on that bike nearly 9 hours and I have no complaints.
Amazing bike!
I got laid off yesterday. Having hard time starting my day
Ugh. Yeah. I get that. What industry? Is there anything that you’d normally not be able to do because of work that you really enjoy doing? Maybe try to do that today. Go to the gym? If you don’t have a therapist, maybe try to find one? Talking about it isn’t going to find you a job but your mental state is important.

Why can't you re-charge while at work for the return trip?
I do. That’s the only way I would have enough battery for 60 miles.
@@TheCommutist Interesting. My Aventon Level.1 is rated for 60 miles WITH pedaling. Of course, I've never been close to that. Perhaps that's an EPA rating... <wink wink>
Yeah it says 60 miles max range for the haul, but there’s just no way I’m going to get that mileage. Perhaps a very light rider in favorable wind conditions with very little elevation and very little starting/stopping.
I have a quick question given that you have the passenger package, my understanding you can only have the panniers on the front i and a front rack. Have you ever used front panniers or rack while carrying your child? How does it handle? I am thinking of getting this to pick up my daughter and put our backpacks in the front panniers while she rides in the back. Great video and I hope you get better soon
I have. When we go shopping, I throw panniers on the front plus a bag on the front rack. It handles just fine. With the smaller wheel (vs a 700c) you can’t lean it over as far to turn or you’ll scrape the bottom of the pannier, but I’ve not had that issue. I’m not trying to rail corners with kids on the back :) apart from that it doesn’t really change the handling. It’s a heavy bike so you’re not affecting the mass by that much when you add bags. Kid on the back adds more, but again, we find it really comfortable and SUPER fun. All 3 kids constantly want to go for rides. It’ll be nice to get back to using it as my car.
@@TheCommutist I really appreciate the detailed reply. I will make sure to tell specialized to send you a commission check as you have sold me on the bike.
Hah. If only. :)
I subbed and un-subed in the same video lol. All the full frame face shots seem like you trying to make out with me, way to personnel for my liking lol bye.
Great review, love your production value. Is the battery easily removable in every day use to be taken inside for charging at the office and home? That's my one reservation about this bike since I have no way to charge outside and can't bring the bike inside the office with a long full battery required commute.
It is. HMU on instagram and I’ll send you a video.
To be clear, that’s exactly what I was doing with the battery. Taking in and charging it at my desk (and will be again when I can ride)
Sorry to hear about your being hit. The main reason I prefer hub motors over mid-drive is that there is a power loss due to the chain in mid-drive. I think I've heard something like 11%, which if true is enormous. The closer you put the motor to the wheels the more efficient it is. And as someone pointed out elsewhere in the comments, the Haul ST has a torque sensor and not a cadence. I've had my Haul ST for a couple of months now and love it.
There’s drive train loss either way, but I see your point. If the motor is in the hub, you only lose *your* power, not the total system power to drive train inefficiency. I love mine, too, and yes, I realize now that it’s got a torque sensor.
Enjoyed your review!
Thanks!
I absolutely love my Globe Haul ST! I was so close to buying a Tern GSD until I realized that I’d prefer having a throttle for off the line performance and a higher top speed. So glad that I didn’t. And you’re right, the torque sensor makes for a smooth power delivery. On level 1 and 2 with no throttle, I get about 55 miles. I installed a Kinekt suspension seatpost and it made a world of a difference because unlike my road bikes, where I have my weight evenly distributed from the saddle to the hoods, most of my weight on the Haul ST is on the saddle. Never had my teeth rattle until I rode the Globe. Not it’s like riding a Cadillac. I dialed in the sag to remove most of the preload and bob so pedaling is still smooth unlike some old single pivot mtn bikes. But when I hit bumps on the road, it soaks up the bone jarring impact.
That’s a great tip! I’ve had that experience, too.
It’s hub drive though there is a torque sensor. Wasn’t sure if you had cited that key difference.
Interesting. I assumed it was sensing cadence and speed. Torque sensor would explain why it’s so much better then other hub motors
Nice video. I love my Globe Haul ST but I actually feel the opposite way about the throttle curve. It’s pretty hilly where I am at and would use the throttle on my other e-bikes for starting from a stop on them. The Haul ST’s throttle has such a slow windup it’s pretty much useless for starting on an incline.
Ah, I haven’t needed to use it to start on a hill, but I can see that being an issue. I guess if it had more immediate pickup, the solution for not ejecting a kid off the back would just be to ease onto the throttle, rather than just “flooring” it. It didn’t occur to me until your comment that, for me, it’s less of a throttle and more of a binary switch. It’s either all the way on or all the way off.
@@TheCommutist it does almost feel like a binary switch but there is a curve in there a very short one though. I actually emailed Specialized this morning about that before I watched your video. Since the bike uses over the air firmware updates It would be nice if they can add something on the app in future to change the throttle curve to match your riding style like how they have it to turn the throttle on or off. It will probably never happen though. It's still a great bike and the torque sensor almost makes up for that issue on hill starts for me.
Yeah. I agree, it would be nice for the throttle to behave like a throttle, and not like a switch. I'll also reach out.
Nice E-bike Ivor. So...this video a month ago. gotcha. ;) I hope enough battery to get you to point A to Z...what if battery stops, so then you are able to pedal...?
I mean…I can’t pedal *now*, but yes had my battery died then I’d have been able to pedal the bike just fine. It would just be very slow because it’s so heavy.
Nice to see someone actually cycling properly on an ebike. Thanks for video
Part of the reason I wanted to get the bike was to be able to speed up my commute but still ride at endurance power. The other major use case for me was to be able to commute in on easy/off days without wrecking my training. It was working out well, and as soon as I can ride again, I’ll be right back on it
