Using a fly cutter and jigs on a Bridgport mill to surface flat parts. Minnesota Implement.
A video of set-up and use of jig templates and a fly cutter on a Bridgport mill.
Yes, I know, no safty glasses, I took them off to set up the camera and then forgot to put them back on for the video.
The point of view of the camera kinda makes it look like my hands are close to the tooling. That part is 10 inch wide by 16 inch long.. my hands were never closer than about a foot from the tool. But even I flinched when watching the video. 😒

An updated on this. It ended up being the AFM system... the 4 cylinder /8 cylinder system that cuts out the intake valves. I purchased a $40 electric module from Amazon, and it solved the rattleing problem... I can still hear some minor noise in the engine, so I likely already caused some permanent damage, but at least it's driveable now .

Looks like you need an X axis power feed. And a larger flycutter 😎
I am a retired landscape contractor. I built a couple of these for my business. I also added several features that improved it's usefulness many fold. Do you have an email address that I could send you further information? Regards
Who knew that there could be so many tips on using an annular cutter. Thanks very much. Regards.
I was using in 1977 Same manual Bridge port type. Miss that machine
Preparing for Christmas? ;)
Good job
Excellent, but where are your safety glasses?
I was thinking the same thing
i have done alot of machinnig wit fly cutters.I never broke a cutter. That would pucker me up if that happened
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks........................................................
Great consice explanation and practical application. Thanks
Just found this channel and love this type of content. Great job! Thanks for teaching us.
The description of feeding "into and out of" the work was very confusing to me. Were you trying to explain "Climb Milling " vs "Conventional Milling" ?
He was describing conventional. The insert or primary cutting edge goes into the the material head on. in climb cutting it is opposite to eliminate chatter in the backlash of the feed screw. Where as the tool would tend to pull the work in instead of pushing the work away. Learned about that when I tried a big mill cutter in my lathe. I bought a mill and made a couple fly cutters that would hold 3/8 in square insert type carbide lathe tools. Easy to make and worked well on Aluminum and Steel. Many different fly cutter configurations. This guy uses his mill every day and knows from experience what works. Safety is always a consideration. Metal flys when you are fly cutting.
@@martinnorbeck4657 Yes...I get that...but he did not use the words CONVENTIONAL MILLING........I like the video...but as a retired machine shop teacher, I found his attempt at describing it..."CLUMSY" sorry if I nit pick....I am more accustomed to TEXT BOOK LANGUAGE DESCRIBING CLIMB MILLING AND CONVENTIONAL MILLING...that's all....not looking for a fight....THANKS...
@@markclauss2314 I had no internet and am self taught. I assumed you were a student or a diy guy. I understood your confusion right away. My high school had industrial arts, but too many students for the time in the class.
I found that confusing as well, also if he pushed material into the center vs away from the center he would only have to deburr the ends instead of all 4 sides.
I've never seen a hollow drawbar setup for Bridgeport but I have used R8 Hogan holders that have a coolant line running to a floating collar and they work really well. For the price of those cutters even an important coolant through holder is better that not by far.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,as a machinist , i feel the things you are saying,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks for your generous videos and time brother.................................................
Cool beans. Thanks!
Galen, new shop is great…a work in progress…love the 3Ellis saws…cheers from Florida …Paul
What kind of steel is that? Where is it from? Is it cheap steel or is this a common occurrence? Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the information on belt tension.
Very common for the past 10 or so years. A36 has gotten very bad for impurities.
Enjoy the videos. Ellis saws and Bridgepots…cheers from Florida …Paul …new subscriber
A cheap Chinese hole saw would've done the job, Possibly faster. And that no longer a precision Kurt vise.
No….no it wouldn’t. Those annular cutters are better metal, have flutes for chip evacuation and don’t chatter and cut a way more accurate hole. If you’re drilling that thick of steel with a damn hole saw at least drill a damn hole on the periphery of the saws cutting area for the chips to fall out.
There are no "chunks" of carbon in steel plate. Your feed speed or movement/slop in your table or vice will do that
His cutter was shot, forced the table to shift and bound up the kerf. These cutters have less than .003" clearance in the grooves they cut. In his last video he was making light blue chips at 80rpm.
@@phalanyx3478 Yep. I use these cutters every day. I know the tolerances. Never found a "chunk" of carbon in the steel to make one break though He fucked up and created an excuse as to why so he could explain to anyone else watching who has no idea. He made a mistake. Own up too that shit. We all make them. That's how you learn and are able to teach others
I was confused by this too. If there was "carbon chunks" in there it would be graphite, which breaks apart really easy (think of a pencil lead) and acts even lubricating, and I doubt it would have been diamond. Might be more like chips getting trapped in the slot and binding up the cutter. A36 is also a common structural steel with only little carbon content.
Not carbon. --D
i like the straight to the point style videos. Even with the background noise. You act like you care about getting the job done and not just being there for the money. Lots of guys would just bust up tools with the attitude that the company will just buy more. Also like all the tips on how to avoid work hardening the cut and running it slow. I see these cutter sets from China, India, Pakistan being sold and now I will have to try them. Thanks for you time and effort. The tip about the weld seam on the inside of the box tube is noteworthy as well. Once you bust thru the top of the box you might think you are in, but that hard seam might surprise you. Overall great tips.
Carbon or carbide inclusion?
There are a few reasons why You, broke this cutter ??? But none of them have anything to do with Carbon Chunks 😒
Mist Coolant ??? IF you used standard Coolant, it would lubricate the cutting edge and be drawn up inside the ID of the cutter to lubricate the tool. I know Coolant can be messy to use. But it's better than burning up Tooling👍
I wanted to watch this video why even bother filming when someone is using the loudest arc welder in the history of the world right next to you???
only thing I'd change is , use a vacuum cleaner instead of air hose. think about clean up time.
Those cutters usually have a spring loaded pin in the center that pushes the slug out after drilling the hole. We use them in a cnc mill to drill hundreds of holes through the side of steel tubes mounted on a 4th axis.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, a fourth axis would be any given angle to the workpiese,,,,correct ??? ............................
@@ThomasELeClairour forth axis is just like a lathe chuck and a tailstock so you can rotate the part and drill holes through the side.
Dude in background sound's likes he's welding with his lead right off the powerline.
what's really good is leaning the thumb on the body to transfer the vibration of the cut to feel how the cut goes, that's old school manual milling - Thanks
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,old school is hardcore real school,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no shortcuts..........................................................................................
Really good practical info. Thanks for sharing!
I always use cutting oil on the holesaws.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I'm hard of hearing,,,,,,yet I managed to understand..............................

Well, that sucks
Thank you, I saved money watching this video with your information.
Thank you for watching, and for your feedback.
do u have any tips i got one i wanna do the same thing only rwd tho
It really depends on your skill level and shop tools that you have. I know alot of folks will do a Unibody build, but I tend to prefer to start with a full frame, like an S10 or cutlass frame, and then build the body shell onto that... I tend to treat the structure and the body as 2 separate parts until theu are mated.
God video as always. Could you build a screw splitter that I could use on my 763 Bobcat or my JD 710 D TLB?
It is good to have inventory!
Have you ever thought of making a screw type log splitter, or tilt faceplate? It looks like a great set up you have now.
Thank you. It is great to have all this space. We are learning to adjust to the space.
We have looked at building the screw style log splitter in the past. It's a surge-trend market. They become popular for a year or 2, and then fall out of favor for another 3 yo 4 years, until the trend starts again. Typically, the demand years for them, is also the demand years for our tree pullers, so while we were in a small shop, it was not a viable plan to add more to that seasonal build. We may visit those products again now that we are in a larger shop.
Are you guys still making these? the website is down Looking for something that can pull 6" - 10" piles (round)
Smooth camera work and good smooth narration Galen.
Thank you kindly!
Another thing i wanted to mention, that car is not a 4x4 it is an AWD (all wheel drive)!!!
@jcanfixall1585 it is a 208 transfer case out of a 3/4 ton truck... it is 4 wheel drive... it can be locked into 2wd or 4wd. Not trying to be negative, but it's always funny to me when folks who have never sat in the seat or ever even seen something in person tell others what something is or is not
@@galenkoeckeritz8488 I made a mistake I figured you used a car AWD chassis to build it... Isn't it hard when cornering with 4x4... I built a 1983 Chevy C10 short box AWD using suspension out of an Astro van it was bad ass cornering a full size truck at 50mph, I had an Audi Quattro when I was younger.... There's a few AWD cars on UA-cam one of the cooler ones is a G body I think a Cutlass from LA...
If you want or need info on vortec heads check out Cutters Performance on UA-cam, formerly Pisscutters performance...
Very nice, wish I had one!
Can you make more content on this I’m trying to do this to my brother that he left me when he passed
I have about 4 other videos of the car on my channel. Unfortunately, I don't have alot of other photos or video while I was building it.
There are a few other videos on my channel about this car. I have not done much more with it over the years. Still have it, but the engine has been less than reliable, so I have only put about 15,000 miles on it.
My eyes rolled back when I saw the title of the video, but it was actually very well done and informative. I will refer beginning metal artists in our club to it. What type of grinder is that?
It's a 22 year old Metabo W7. They discontinued it about 12 years ago. Best grinder I have ever owned, and it gets 4 hours of hard run time a day, 4 to 5 days a week... The Metabo W9 and W11 are similar, but not near as good of quality. I have burned up 4 of the W9 and 2 W11 in the same time that this grinder has kept going... nothing is as good as it used to be. But Metabo is still one of the few with the slip clutch. Dewalt has a slip clutch in their battery operated grinder, not sure if they have it in the corded ones as well or not.
Nice design, Galen!
Appreciate the video, very helpful for us beginners.
