Process For Creating A Portrait of John - November 2024-January 2025
From November 2024 to January 2025, I did a portrait painting of John.
Here are the stages of the painting.
I found a photo of John..
Then I trace the photo onto 300 lb cold press watercolor paper.
I mix ultramarine blue and burnt umber and begin layering the shading and build up contrast in the painting.
Once the underpainting is done, I start layering color. I slowly build up washes of color, wait for it to dry. Then I do another layer.
Then I finished my painting.
I used these materials:
300 lb Coldpress Watercolor Paper
Craft Smart Graphite Paper
Liquitex Acrylic Paint
Angelo Lopez’s art was deeply inspired by his love of comics and his love of children’s book illustrations. As a child, Angelo loved watching the Marx Brothers, Abbott and Costello, Willliam Powell and Myrna Loy, Charlie Chaplin and all the old comedians and comic actors and actresses of the Golden Age of Hollywood. He likes to laugh, whether something is funny or not, and he channels this into his art.
Angelo graduated from San Jose State University with a B.S. in Illustration. Since he graduated, he has created murals and utility box art in the South San Francisco Bay Area. He has exhibited his work in Gallery Saratoga, the Sunnyvale Art Gallery and Chopsticks Alley Art Gallery. His paintings are also seen in coffee shops, libraries, and assorted odd places.
From April 9, 2008 to April 2011, Angelo Lopez was the regular cartoonist for the Tri-City Voice, a local newspaper of the Milpitas, Fremont, and Union City areas in California. From December 2011 to March 2023, Angelo Lopez was the regular cartoonist for the Philippine News Today, a Filipino American community newspaper based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

OK, nice 'toon. I like the visual and artistic style. Only reservation I have is the comment about the MAGAs' "legitimate econimic concerns" which I believe are 99% Trumpist BS poopaganda. The US' economy is _legitimately_ the strongest in the world right now, and although prices have gone up, so have wages - on average, the purchasing power of people in the US is on par to _slightly better off_ than they were 4 years ago. These are the numbers I read and hear, anyway. Perhaps people are cherry-picking their stats, and for sure it's not uniform across the population. The most serious _legitimate concern_ I would have as a person living in the USA right now is the culture of the police having absolute power in any interaction with the public, irrespective of who's right or wrong, with the only recourse being to defer to them in the moment and try sort it out later - which has so often not worked out in the correct way that there is clearly a systemic problem that permeates from the courts and prosecutors all the way down through the police ranks to the street. And that is not something that MAGA is going to address, _guaranteed._ Apologies for the rant 😝

    • @ford289cid7
      @ford289cid7 18 днів тому

Actually, there is a legitimate economic concern for MAGAs and almost everyone else-the increasing concentration of money in the hands of the top 1%, or even the top 0.1%. Only thing is, Trump's ultranationalist talking points will only make things worse, not better. He convinces the white working class to vote against their own self-interest better than anyone.

Thanks for the comment Christopher. And thank you for liking my cartoon. I slightly disagree with you about MAGA's legitimate concerns. One of the questions that I have had these past 9 years is how did the working class White communities in the Rust Belt states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, etc... which used to be solidly Democrat, fall under the sway of Trumpism? I don't know the full answer. But I learned that over the past few decades, many of these working class communities were hard hit by globalization and the outsourcing of manufacturing jobs that used to provide them with secure middle class jobs. The jobs that remained in these communities paid half as much as the jobs that disappeared and did not provide any of the benefits of the manufacturing jobs that disappeared. As corporations outsourced those jobs overseas, it undercut the union's leverage to help workers with wages and benefits. These working class White communities began experiencing many of the same maladies that inner city Black and minority communities faced in the 1970s and 1980s when middle class jobs disappeared in minority communities: drug addiction problems, a lack of interest in schools, a rise in suicides, a spike in crime, a sense of hopelessness and despair. For decades, progressives like Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown were criticizing trade deals like NAFTA for the harm that they were causing to working class communities. Trump co-opted that criticism of trade deals and made it a centerpiece of his appeal to Rust Belt communities that were hurt by globalization. There is a really good PBS Frontline documentary titled "Two American Families: 1991-2024" that follows one Black working class family and one White working class family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as they struggle for 3 decades to survive a changing economy that is increasingly hostile to working class people. ua-cam.com/video/VClQ_TlXT2U/v-deo.html

the load of Socialistic left wing drivel that is being spewed by you is amazing. We have just spent 4 years being abused by the Biden admin, a group of people that weaponized the DOJ against anyone that disagrees with them, and you are worried about Trump. You are 4 years to late and blind to the fact the the Biden admin has been the textbook example of abuse of power. People that lied about the health of the president, they used their friends in big tech to suppress any descent, the list goes on and on and yet you are foolish enough to worry about Trump's intentions. What I see is that the left is so far out that they have no Idea why they fail because they continue to fail. and your cartoon is just another example of scare mongering.

Y'all need help! Like SERIOUSLY need help. All this talk of being a tyrant or shredding up the constitution and all that crap. He could have done so in his 1st term but he didnt. He often diffused federal power and religated more of that back to the citizens of the country. The man is VERY reluctant to use authority or send folks to die for his ego... Y'all need SERIOUS help as we did have such an issue over the last 4 years.
