[1CC] Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (MS-DOS, Dhalsim, max difficulty)

The MS-DOS port of World Warrior is both impressive and impressively busted. Programmed by two people for U.S. Gold (Gordon Fong is credited for the original logic), it's surprising they managed to recreate so much of the game for DOS. However, the gameplay is extremely janky, and the soundtrack features two songs that repeat constantly. I used Dhalsim for this playthrough because he's hilariou...

    It'd be interesting to see if you could make a follow-up video and get some women's opinions on this. Women aren't a monolith, so its not like whatever sample size you give will be the end all be all final answer, but I think it can help contextualize these points, especially for some in this comment section who disagree on the issue you raise. I think its true we are far too used to games being sold as a "boys club" kind of thing, and women being sexualized is practice that only somewhat recently has been starting to unravel. I myself welcome new approaches to female character design that isn't just oversexualization. From my own specific male perspective, gaming is at its most interesting time in history in terms of character design, so much so that it can make or break games (i.e. Concord), and I think female character design can only go up from here (if the industry lets it). I definitely sympathise with many of your points. Its a fine video, and you bring attention to some important stuff.

      Thanks for taking the time to write your thoughts. I enjoyed reading your comment. I agree that it would be great to get a collection of opinions from women both in and out of gaming on the matter. I worrry that managing such a project would be outside of my skillset though, and I'd hate to bungle it and muddy the waters of the debate more than they already are. I'm no sociologist at the end of the day. That's ultimately why I opted to emphasize considering our individual thoughts and feelings about it in the video, since I can at least offer my own thoughts with some certainty. Thanks again!

    I really don't understand how anyone viewing or depicting "underaged" characters in a certain way would lead to not very nice things in real life. Most people who enjoy fictional works with these types of things don't end up doing anything like that because they know better that anything is okay in fiction because no one is harmed in it while actions in real life can have major consequences. The only people who would do anything like that are those who already weren't very nice or those who have moral agency issues, such as having difficulties separating fiction from reality. However, the actions of those who harm others should not be used to blame the fictional media they consume. In the end, it's all about the individual and what they do based on not only the fictional works they consume as well as how their surroundings influence them. Edit: I understand if one were to simply not like these characters shown in a way. That's valid. If that's the case, then I'd recommend either leaving that piece of media alone or simply putting it aside if it isn't going to intrude on the enjoyment of the work as a whole. In either scenario, it's best to peacefully disagree with those who feel otherwise and not compare them with real life harm.

    • @GGTHRILLHO
      @GGTHRILLHO Місяць тому

      I don't believe it's a straight yes or no answer regarding whether harm results, and in reality, neither of us knows the absolute truth of the matter. I did show one study that concluded that the depictions of sexualized women in gaming is a contributor toward how real life women are perceived in rape cases, but the real goal is for you to decide for yourself. I'm suggesting that there's some measure of likelihood one way or the other, and that it's for us individually to decide whether or not we're personally okay with accepting whatever risk of association that leads to. Telling me that I'm wrong or that you disagree is besides the point. I've satisfied my heart by thinking about the issue for myself and acting on my moral sense, and I'd like you to make a decision for yourself too. That's all. If your heart says it's a non-issue, then so be it. Mission accomplished!

    • @PKSuperStar256
      @PKSuperStar256 Місяць тому

      @@GGTHRILLHO, I already made a decision and that was already stated earlier. Honestly, I find it interesting that some of the artists that draw or make these characters are women. For example, the creator of the Neptunia series (known not only for featuring personified video game references but also for a bunch of fanservice) is a woman as well. It just goes to show that they are completely okay with things like that in media just as much as men are. While some of "those" cases can be contributors to not very nice things, they don't have to be. It's important that people learn morality and separating fiction from reality from a young age to minimize the amount of harm against others that would happen if they weren't educated.

    • @GGTHRILLHO
      @GGTHRILLHO Місяць тому

      Women aren't a hive mind. Some women may be callous, or cruel, kind, or empathetic. If a woman makes a character design that contributes to the trend of over sexualizing girls in games, that doesn't mean that all women think it's okay. It doesn't even mean that woman necessarily thinks it's okay. It's her job, and she needs to consider her own material wellbeing. It would be lovely if everyone was taught a sort of ideal and perfectly kind morality, but this isn't the case in the real world. We have to contend with what's happening now. Offering up a hypothetical alternative is a way of dismissing the reality of the current circumstances. Avoiding the potential consequences by softening the language so far as to say "not very nice things" is another way to diminish the potential issue. Child sexualization might lead to child rape, child enslavement, and who knows what other horrors. We shouldn't hide those possibilities behind vague and soft language. Regardless, thanks for reading my thoughts and for checking out the video.

    You cannot sexualize a human (or what is meant to resemble a human) being. Humans are literally the result of sexuality. The only possible invasive act is to de-sexualize humans, usually as a result of the influence of puritanism, a disgusting and inhuman world view, that should be opposed in every way. And what exactly do you call "child like features"? Fully developed female bodies? Or certain parts of the physiognomy? I know several people, who's faces have been described by certain people as "child like" - even though they're meanwhile in their late 40s. If you can't look at some grown up humans (perhaps especially from specific ethnicities) without seeing a child, then there is indeed a serious issue, but it is nowhere else, except in your head, and I'd seriously recommend to seek professional help.

I did show a study in the video that concluded that exposure to images of sexualized women does contribute to the development of negative perceptions of women, but I also don't claim to be completely read on the entire body of literature in the field. I wish there was hot man games though. The fmpov is hard to find and male gaze is always there. Over all though it is best to teach kids healthy expectations and standers. There needs to be allot of good media that does this, just for the kids that don't have good parents. Un related in Dragons Dogma 2 their is allot of sexy pawn girls in the same out fit. It's little annoying but it's fine, because the game allows you to create who ever you want including quite literally grandma. I agree that there should be more careful oversight from parents to ensure that their kids have a solid emotional and logical foundation before taking on these kinds of subjects, but that just doesn't seem to be the case in the real world. I think equalizing the level of sexualization on display by bringing the portrayals of boys more in line with girls ignores that these images are still seen by everyone. It might be more satisfying for you as an adult, but does that self-satisfaction come at a cost to others? And if so, is that acceptable to you?

      Since the depictions of sexualized young girls in the video are still being viewed and slobbered over today, I seriously doubt this is 10 years too late. Maybe if some of the fighting game cretins could advance in maturity by those 10 years you speak of, you'd have a point. Alas... Sorry, CRINGE TAKE LOLOLOL

    I appreciate that at least you draw the distinction between legality and morality, very important. But then you invoke underaged-ness which is only existent in relation to an arbitrary age of consent. The truth is that humans are wired to copulate as soon as 16, which is even taken under consideration by the law by the fact of laws around two consenting minors. I think a man would be lying if he denied that he finds women as young as 16 attractive on a base (primal) level. Now I have to add that because societies' and as such also mine morality is to never cross that boundary. Looking should be enough for anyone, and to go any further would be a sin (alternatively from a secular point of view it would be just immoral). I find people who see children (before finishing puberty of which purpose is to prepare a body for conception) as arousing are disgusting as I cannot see children in a sexual way and believe that those children should be shielded from sexual content until puberty. I don't know if there would be a rational and consistent way of distinguishing normal children depiction from a covertly sexual. I think that it can be distinguished by "common sense" as underlying fetish can be spotted. What I mean to say by this is that I definitely do oppose child exploitation in all forms. On the point of influence on young audience, I don't think it is as severe as presented. Similar claims have been made in regards to violence in videogames but have been proven false. People, including younger ones are able to distinguish reality from fiction and separate the two accordingly. Even though I have been exposed to Total Recall at a young age I don't not find triple bosom to be my standard of beauty (ok that might be a bit of a strawman but the point still stands). I think that all art in culture has been permiated by depictions of youth and beauty, games are no different. Even if there disgusting perverts, it's not exclusive to video games.

      Heya, thanks for writing out your thoughts. I appreciate the time you've taken to think about the subject. I'm not an expert in the study of sex or psychology, but it's my impression based on what reading I have done that the current trend of arguing that humans have a base, underlying sexual instinct that determines how and when we find each other attractive, and that it can override our ration selves isn't taken seriously in the academic literature. It might be worth checking it out yourself as well, as I may very well be wrong about that. Regarding the influence on audiences, young and old, I didn't want to bog the video down in making an academic argument. I did post the conclusion of one study that did support the idea that such imagery does influence our overall perception of women, but whether you believe that or not, it doesn't interfere with the central thesis of the video, which is that we should think about the subject for ourselves and steer ourselves according to our own sense of right and wrong. I'll add to that though that at the very least, violence and sex are inherently different aspects of our psychology, and so applying any conclusions from one to the other might be a mistake. I mentioned in the video the idea that a prolonged multi-source exposure to an idea can shape how we broadly feel about the idea in society. That doesn't mean that you'd watch Total Recall and so that movie would alone decide how you see the world. Rather, it's about the reinforcement of ideas which are either not considered abhorrent, which extreme violence is, and thereby solidifying them as part of our accepted cultural norms. In this case, the depictions of sexualized girls aren't immediately understood to be harmful as you yourself argued in your comment, but when exposed to consistent messaging regarding the subject over the course of many years, it can begin to feel normal, inevitable, or even proper. It contributes to how we shape our understanding of women broadly and their role in society. And I think this is supported by your point that there will always be some perverts hanging around in gaming. That perverts hanging around happens will all sorts of stuff. That it's normal, inevitable. But ultimately, I think all of those types of arguments get away from the central idea I'm trying to put across, which is that we should think about it for ourselves. I'd rather we thought about it by ourselves and for ourselves. Creeps, pop culture, and whatever else be damned. Regardless, these are just some immediate reactions from me. Thanks again for commenting, it's interesting to think about your perspective.

    An important topic to explore and you made some great points. Appreciate you cutting to the footage of a drive when you did too! I've always been uncomfortable with Horny fightstick art of these characters because I feel they make fgc gatherings less inclusive due to their alienating nature.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The FGC in particular is uniquely bad for it, and it's become deeply entrenched in the culture. At the same time, the FGC is really great for accepting and accommodating LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, or just people who are just on the social fringes but aren't harmful. So it seems especially odd, and maybe especially damning, that the FGC on the whole is so willing to target women and girls for some pretty extreme sexualization. The way the community treats these other groups suggests to me that they can at least understand the problem. What attempts I've made to raise the issue have been uniformly met with indifference in the FGC discords, social media, and friend groups I've hung out in. By comparison, the racing sim groups, retro game groups, and general gaming hangouts I've been in have all taken the issue much more seriously. As you can tell, it's something in particular that bugs me! If I could change anything about the FGC, it would be that.

    I've always liked to play Gran Turismo or Dirt Rally, but I was always worried that I was missing out because I wasn't as good as I could be (even though I'd usually be up against the easiest possible AI). Then I just kept playing Dirt Rally with that idea of surviving. Not crashing in that game is more important than anything else with how damage can affect your car. I never realized that the same idea of survival could be applied to track racing too, which is pretty cool! I'll definitely keep that in mind when I get around to trying Gran Turismo and Assetto Corsa again sometime

    For the controller part, I would say: "every controller is a good controller, as long as it plays well with the game you want to play", and assetto corsa is *NOT* one of these games, on the other hand, assetto corsa competizione plays surprisingly well with a controller.

    as a person who has been into sim racing for the past 11 years. dont dive into cheap wheels and hardware expecting youre gonna have 1:1 immersion to a real life car. i found that if you are just dipping your feet in and testing whether sim racing is for you or not. try some at least mid range equipment. because you are either one of two people. someone who can have fun without the highest end gear or someone who'll be sorely dissapointed that you didnt feel as immersed as you were expecting. if you are part of the later then I would suggest a buy once cry once approach. because if you are serious about sim racing then you will eventually be serious about your hardware.
