Hi Barry, I am now up to date with all your videos. Glad to see your still going strong as I have looked at your Facebook page and now follow you. To be honest I dont go into Facebook much. I really love the way your layout disappears into the background, you have blended it so well and I can see what you mean about doing the backscene first and then matching the colours on the layout, makes a lot of sense. I was going to put the backscene in first anyway as it seems to me to be the best way of doing things, no reaching over stuff, it just seems to be the right order to do things. Anyway please put an update of your fantastic layout on here, please. We dont see enough of really good N gauge layouts on here and yours is first class. Regards Chris
Bognor Regis - Chris's N Gauge Thanks for the kind comments Chris. I will endeavour to do a long awaited update video this week.
My 35 year old Mallard lost it rubber tyres and unable to replace, saw a video where they replaced the rubber with Bullfrog Snot. Purchased a jar, not cheap and such a small jar but it lasts for ages and you do not need a lot. Works brilliantly, better than rubber tyres. Video is ua-cam.com/video/nOawcCRpxmo/v-deo.html Hope it helps. Regards Chris
Hi Barry, slowly working through all your videos and got to this one and now I have a question. Love that tree, appreciate it is Woodland Scenics but which kit is it you purchased. Those back scenes and the way you have put it in looks fantastic, brilliant job. I then had a look at Copenhagen Fields, to be honest I had never heard of it but wow what a layout, totally blew me away. My only criticism is that I am enjoying your build so much I wish it was a lot bigger but we must make do with what we have. Regards Chris
Bognor Regis - Chris's N Gauge Hi Chris, this video was filmed some time ago and at the time I was making trees from the woodland scenic realistic tree kits. Since then, I have discovered the 4D model shop who sell the most realistic trees I have ever seen. I use these exclusively now. modelshop.co.uk/Shop?term=Trees I need to make another video as things have moved on so much.......it's just time! But I will! Thanks for watching. I'm on Facebook too, N Gauge Bromsgrove'
The Devonian managed quite well, no need for Big Bertha
Geoff Readman Jumble Lane Indeed Geoff! Thanks for looking & subscribing
Hi, Did you use the hall effect sensor and magnet as listed by Ray at the start of the thread... reason I ask is not sure the magnet etc will fit so confirmation would be great before I buy the parts and turntable... Thanks... Pete.
Pete's Hobbies I used a smaller one if I remember correctly same spec but smaller....
Appreciate the reply, will get the turntable first and can then measure up the available space and go from there... Thanks!
Where did you get the code to do that?
www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/78578-dcc-controlled-peco-turntable-project/ It's a long thread & you do need to read it all as things change.
Been following this channel with much interest. Your Bromsgrove layout us excellent. Very realistic, gritty and inspiring. Also your progress from wood coloured baseboards to now is quick. That gives monkeys like me hope for future layout plans! Just wondering if there will be more updates and how is the progress?
sparkshot thank you for your kind words. I hope to do a video update very very soon. I just want to make a little more progress.....
Barry Morton - Ok, many thanks for your response. :) Looking forward to it. I do not know if you would be interested in my latest YT series; I'm filming the building of my first ever N gauge layout. So far it is going good, it's the second layout I have attempted wiring too as I have struggled to get my head around it. Is kinda making sense now though.
Brilliant as always mate. keep wanting to see more.
JAMES DEMU thanks James
Ha ha! Thanks Dave
great effect !! watch that shed dave
brilliant !! super job cheers dave
davestrains thanks Dave
Thanks Keith
Brilliant stuff and some great tips on making some veg. Cheers
Michael Henfrey thank you Michael
love it. great stuff. I just hope i can make my next layout looks half as good as yours does.
JAMES DEMU thank you James
Thank James
fantastic as always. could watch your layout for hours
brilliant layout. love seeing pics if it on Facebook and even better getting to see the 'whole picture' here on UA-cam.
Hi Barry, I notice you are using Cobalt point motors. How did you wire up the scissors with these. An image showing the under board arrangement would be useful. Thanks in anticipation. Mark
Hi Mark, I use a hex frog juicer for the frogs on the scissors crossover......the Cobalts just do the switching. For wiring Cobalts to also power the frogs, scroll down this link: www.dccconcepts.com/resources/PDFs/020-Hobby-Related/040-Layout-Wires-and-Wiring/A-DCC-Advice-11-Wiring-Pointwork-and-Special-Track-Conditions-For-DC-or-DCC-2014.pdf
Thanks for putting with together as a train spotter I spent many hours on that bridge. I think is the one at what used to be called Garringtons. Is that right? a great model keep up the great work.
Thanks Simon, yes it is garringtons bridge..... Also lesser known as Newton Bridge I believe.
Nice track work...
Thank you!
Hi Michael, firstly thank you for your interest in the corridor connectors. We are now selling these as we have perfected the operation. Basically, the bellows is attached to one coach and rides free against a blank on the adjoining coach. Email me at barry.morton913atbtinternet.com (written at to stop spammers!) for further details.
- EDIT - just found the HD version! -/ EDIT - What articles did you use as a starting point, I'd be interested in something like this, I'm modelling 1970' -80's but still want corridor connectors! looks really good. unfortunately your video isn't partcularly high def, so it's harder to make out some of the detail but the vague idea is good. what happened if you tried two bellows that were unconnected between themselves but each to one of the coaches?
Brilliant i hope my layout looks half as good as this when i get it up and running! The musics good too, What is it?
Thanks for the kind comments Phil. The music is something that comes on the iPad with iMovie!!
I found lubricating helps but it's something to do with the traction tyres on the rear wheels I think. But I can't find new ones anywhere!
Mine too!
This looks amazing. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed!
enjoyed your video lovely layout
Looks fantastic, really very realistic. Those trees are very impressive...Ian
Thanks Ian. Yes, so glad I found the 4D Model Shop. Their trees are fantastic.
Looking fantastic Barry!! Always a pleasure to see a true modeller at work! What did you use to make your track look so weathered? Also how do you ballast around your points?
Thank you for the nice comments. As for ballasting, all the paints I use are by Precision Paints. I start by airbrushing a light layer of sleeper grime over the track followed by a light layer of Weathered Sleepers. Then I ballast using Woodland Scenics Fine Dark Brown Ballast. When dry I airbrush again with Track Colour and again with Railmatch Weathered Black. Less is more, so easy on the airbrushing!
Ballasting around the points is done VERY carefully, a little ballast at a time then use a very fine brush to adjust as necessary. Patience, patience, patience!
Thank you Jon T
Barry Morton what's the grade?
It's 2% so slightly less (but a lot shorter) than the real thing.
I just started a n scale layout, my first n scale. I have a 3% grade and my loco has no problem with the haul, my problem is the rolling stock comes uncoupled from the loco on the grade increase. Any advice?
Hmmm, you could try a small piece of blu tank to stop the uncoupling?
Mine does that too
I know what you're on about. How deep is your board? 3 feet? If I could build mine again I'd go with the central operating well idea, that way I could avoid those horrid 9" radius curves! As you're DCC will you be using banking locos? Didn't the ex LMS Garratt do banking duties at Bromsgrove for a while in the 50's? Or am I confusing that with the LNER Garratt on Worsborough bank? I know 'Big Bertha' was purpose built for the Lickey, and I seem to recall I've seen somewhere that she was replaced by pairs of pannier tanks at some point, but I'm not 100% sure! Chris
Big Bertha retired in 1958 Chris. I will be banking Trains up the Lickey using 94XX tanks, a 9F and Jinty(s) as was the real thing in the early sixties. The 9F replaced Big Bertha but inherited the headlight fixed on the front!
Looking fantastic! Do you have any access planned to the storage roads in case you have any derailments or other problems?
I hadn't planned on making the backscene removable. I have been very careful with all the track laying in the storage yards and I've run and operated points until the cows come home ironing out any slight problems. I plan on purchasing/building a tier of 3 steps such as library steps, so I can stand on top and reach over, should and when any such problems occur. I've tried it with a chair and it works well, but steps with some sort of support pole will be ideal. I hope it's use will be limited!! I hope you understand what I'm trying to describe as I haven't got a picture!! I also plan on having 2 cameras covering he storage roads. Barry
Already starting to look like an awesome layout, looking forward to more...Ian
Great video Barry. Really enjoying watching Bromsgrove come on. Fantastic modelling. Keep up the great work. Will have to try and catch up with your thread on the proper N Gauge Forum rather than just on FB.
I meant to say Class 45!!
Hi Steve, probably best if you follow this link. It explains all! www.gaugemaster.com/instructions/dcc_concepts/powerbase%20manual.pdf
Hi Barry, could you explain the dcc concept on the incline ? I'm not sure what those metal plates do but I'm intrigued as my inclines do make my logos struggle a bit. Thanks!
Hi just catching up on your videos enjoyed them so far don't live to far from the licky incline myself and also doing my own n gauge layout not quite as big though keep up the good work matt
Its coming along fine Barry, the electrics look complicated to me, haven't bothered to much on my N gauge layout just kept it DC, but when I start my OO then I'll have to get my head around them, i'll look forward to your next update, cheers Stu @ Lime Junction.
Sorry subbed to :-)
Great update, can't wait for you to get going, as for your back scene, it all depends on your layout, get it started first, I've not even considered a back scene yet and I've been modelling my railway for a few months now, cheers Stu @ Lime Junction (N Gauge)
Thanks dismaldog - they look quality?
Just got my backscene from Ebay-ID Backscenes -Amandajane.3M X 230mm high-i got the hills and dales pack "B".You can get a pack A that joins to it giving 6m.
Great start Barry, very brave to tackle a real location. I envy you your man-cave. Look forward to see the layout develop. Nice to have another N Gauge build on the tube. Ian
Looking foward to further updates. Cheers.
