Learn about the history of the Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Scenic Railway and our efforts to bring historic steam locomotive No. 9 back to Mt. Tam! At the turn of the last century, the Mt. Tam Scenic Railway was one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world. Starting in Mill Valley, in Marin County, California, it climbed and twisted about 2,000 feet up to the East Peak of Mount Tamalpais, earning it the nickname of "The Crookedest Railroad in the World." At the top of the mountain, passengers could enjoy themselves at the the Tavern and take in the magnificent view. The Railway was also the original gateway to Muir Woods.
