Drawing, sketching, and painting tips for a more rewarding watercolour experience. Perfect for beginners or intermediate creatives who prefer a step-by-step approach, ensuring the process is manageable and enjoyable. If you're drawn to the natural world-birds, animals, flowers, landscapes-and have a particular interest in Australian themes, then you've come to the right place
Learn how to draw a Kangaroo and her adorable Joey
You'll be surprised at your new level of confidence after learning how to draw a kangaroo and her joey, with shapes and lines on a foundation of basic anatomy.
I used to find drawing animals challenging, until I started to look at them as stick figures.
You ask how…. Well, I would Google images of their skeleton and see how the bones were put together. All of a sudden drawing became more than just drawing, but a way of learning about my subject, what makes it tick and how it lives, making it even more interesting.
The images of the skeletons are AI generated, (they’ve included the ears…lol), but totally fine for what we need!
You don’t have to an expert, but any idea on how kangaroos are put together really helps and remember the more you practice, the easier it gets.
And then come the proportions…. Oh no, where to start. ..
I found that starting with the size of the head and comparing how many heads I could fit into the length of the body helped a lot.
Same goes for drawing people, I grown man might be 7 heads tall, an infant 3, a child 5…
Let’s break down the drawing process into an envelope, a space to confine our subject to, some simple shapes and lines, and remembering to focus on the kangaroo's anatomy and proportions. When we know how these limbs move, we can move them anyway we like, and the drawing will be believable.
And then we can get to the really exciting part, when we add those life creating details, their eyes, smiles and gestures. Bringing a drawing or a painting to life, has been my number one goal since I was a kid.
The creative way you finish off will uniquely identify you as an artist. Don’t be afraid to experiment, just keep in mind the underlying structure, and you can be as creative as you like.
We’ll learn easy ways of creating facial features that add cuteness, and emphasise strong body parts too, like the hind legs and strong tail.
I hope you enjoy this video and give it a go yourself!

I've been drawing and painting birds for over 25 years and have learned many ways to approach sketching a bird. I'm a huge fan of John Muir Laws and own his book "The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds". He is constantly evolving and finding new ways of approaching these feathered creatures. As I practice, I also continually discover new ways of attempting my subject.
I'm excited to be sharing these techniques with you. If you'd like to see more, drawing and painting techniques, please subscribe and you'll be notified when a new video is uploaded.
I'd love to hear your comments and thoughts...and requests for new videos :-)

How to load your watercolour brush to draw or paint
Переглядів 309Місяць тому
It's important to fully wet your brush right through, then dip into wettened paint and slowly swirl or roll the whole body of the brush, so that it soaks up heaps of water and paint. This way you won't have to redip as often and your paint will flow more freely. It's important to roll and swirl the brush to maintain a nice point to the brush. Paint a sunlit rolling wave in watercolour and learn how to bring the seascape to life
Переглядів 1558 місяців тому
Learn how to paint a rolling wave sunlit from the back. Paint the wave, foam, light and shadow. In preparation for a recent seascape workshop I filmed my practise session to see how long it would take, the colours I would be using and to remind me of the process. I'm really glad I did this, as it is so easy to forget colours or procedures. Even though this was initially for my own benefit, I re...

Thank you, dear Princess 💕💕🤗
Love this! I can't wait to try it! 😍❤
@@KatrinaAmphlett Thanks so much, Katrina. Can't wait to see it!
This is great! I found it helpful when you showed how to put the darks and the shadows in! 😊❤
Thank you, Katrina. I did those to help me think about the darker shades in the painting. When I did the final sketch, I didn't include them, so that the watercolour sketch wouldn't be too busy. I hope you come and join ne for the painting, where it will all come together.❤
Yes, I would love that!! 😍😍
Love it
@Tilfree12345 thanks so much! I really appreciate you! And ...unless you tell me different, I'll be calling you, Princess 🥰
Sweet little bird. Very clear explanations. I look forward to more videos.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your comment and support and look forward to creating more ❤

Thank you for your valued support, dear Princess 🤗
Wow. The way you showed the angles and the relationship between the different parts is so helpful. I’ve been drawing all my life, but have never noticed these things. I have never had lessons so have had to “wing” it. I am now 72 and UA-cam has opened up worlds! Thank you so much. I just stumbled across your channel and have subscribed. Thanks again.
Hi Sharen, Thank you so much! I'm really excited you've found it helpful. I'm continually looking for new ways of approaching tasks and having it resonate with you also is a win-win! Thank you for subscribing and we're bound to have some more fun!
Following your tutorial. I need more practice, but I am happy with my first attempt and I’ll keep trying. I’ll keep watching for your post and following. Can you show a post or do a little more detail about how you blend between colors you’re such smooth transitions between the black and the orange on the back of his head for example. Having fun drawing with paint!
Hi Margie, yes, certainly. The main key to smoothness is to resist retouching. Watercolor does a lot on its own and we have to trust it and let it dry. It's another great idea for a video, thank you. We are currently on a road trip, you could say "bush trip", you know, kangaroos and little reception.... so I aim to do some shorter videos while we're away. Just keep practising and enjoying, and I appreciate your comments. They help me too! 😊
I am new to watercolor painting. And have never been interested in drawing until I stumbled on your website and UA-cam videos. And maybe every instructor teaches drawing using angles, and plastic overlays to figure out the angles but your teaching method is new to me and kind of a revolution. I like how you show and tell why you make your lines and really appreciate you following up with the watercolor of the bird.
Hi Margie, thank you so much. I feel humbled I've inspired you in some way. The techniques I've shown I haven't seen anywhere.... I like coming up with what I think are my own methods... I'm so glad you're enjoying my content...more to come!
Hi. I just found your website and have subscribed. I love the few videos you have of it. I just hope you keep posting. Specially how to draw birds birds with your brush. Anything will do. I just like your tutorials on how you going to detail about why and what you’re doing.
Hi Margie, I really really appreciate your comment and that you'd like to see more! I started my channel in 2013, wirh nothing to show for it, but have now made a commitment to it. Your encouragement is really special to me. I'm learning how to make better videos. If you are interested in any particular birds or anything for that matter, let me know, and hopefully I be able to deliver. Thanks so much for making my day! Anica x
@ can you demonstrate a cardinal or Blue Heron drawing and how you would paint it with watercolor? But really I’ll be interested to see anything you draw. Especially , colorful birds. Thanks.
@margiebowser1397 thank you, Margie. Yes, I'll have to do some research as I've never seen a Cardinal in real life only photos, and same goes for the Blue Heron. I will definitely add them to the list! 😊
@ I will be happy with any tutorial that you post.
Great tutorial! 🐦👌
Thanks, Kat. I'm really glad you enjoyed it! 💕
Cute❤❤😁
Thanks so much....my first short 😅
Amazing! Even I could do this! ,🖌️😍👌
Wow, Katrina! I'm really happy to hear this. Give it a go, and show me, if you like! ❤️
you just helped me figure out why I've been having such a hard time being consistent with watercolors and I've been trying for MONTHS. thank you!!
I really appreciate your comment, and am so glad you found it helpful! :-)
Thank you! This is very helpful!
You're very welcome!
Love this! Can you please show how you load the paint on the brush?!
Thank you, Katrina. I will create a "Short" and show you how to load the brush. Bare with me for a moment, and I'll get it to you! Thank you so much, I'm sure it will help others too!
Hi Katrina, here is a Short to show you how I load my brush: ua-cam.com/video/MXPZ6v2ripk/v-deo.html
I've really enjoyed this video and I love how the angles and shapes relate to each other! I hope to see a new video of yours soon!
Thank you, Katrina. I really appreciate your comment and look forward to making my next video! It is already in the making!
