    wow just when I was about to use the airtag to protect my bike. I think now we will need a bike designer like how tesla chaning the car game for someone to change the bike game to include a device aka part of the bike to be a security system and without it the bike just will not work, will not ride or function without it. there's always a better way, but looks like companies are lazy and more interested in jacking up high prices to pay for the same lame old system. one solution will be to make a piece of the down tube removeable, it has to be stiff and just as strong to complete the tube since that its hollow on the inside anyway. remove it and the bike simply is unusable. im so sick of thieves stealing people's bikes already as I lost 2 already. thanks man and great video.

    this is such a refreshingly honest review - I like that you've had the bike a year and have really put it through its paces, both in distance, terrain and also customisation. Probably like most people, I love the look of this bike (SL 8 model), but I really wanted to use a redshift shock stem to reduce the pounding on my arms and shoulders. The quirks of sizing bug me too, so not only are there additions you can't have but you're tied into Canynon compatible mudguards (fenders), pannier racks and tool bags. I'm probably not going to buy the latest version of this bike, which leaves me a bit gutted. Your precis was invaluable. Many thanks

    I got the Canyon Grizl AL GRX 820 2x drive train 2 years ago. Overall I am very happy with this bike and had no issues with it at all. I did change the handlebar to a wider and more flared bar. I purchased the Canyon top tube bag and half frame bag. Their zippers failed and certainly did not last very long. I found that the gear specs with this bike was adequate for most of the riding I do but once I started going on bike packing trips this set up is totally under geared. Yes , there is enough gearing for keeping the bike rolling on the flats and downhills but with a 46/30 and a 11x36 cassette you start walking as soon as the trail goes uphill. I fixed that issue by exchanging the cassette to an 11x40. Problem solved. A 1x drive train either doesn’t have enough lower gears or enough higher gears. So if you are planning to go touring with this bike choose a 2x set up

    Never had to use one for yrs, buddy system works well, been alone on bike trails to, I bring the bike into the bathroom. I do carry a D-Lock for day trips just in case. I don't care how much a D-Lock weighs, my old classic bike packed, weighs in at 75 lbs water, tools, spare tube, food, first aide so a D-Lock isn't going to make much of a difference for weight. Commonsense goes a long way. Blind spots to avoid. Groups of other bicyclists that are not. You see something out of place, pass it by. I carry pepper spray, never had to use it yet. Just beware of your surrounding without being paranoid LOL!

    Gravel and cross bikes with DI2 (XT/GRX/Ultegra) and a gravel bike with Red 12spd XPLR…. For packing and Ultra, XTR or mechanical GRX are likely unbeatable…. For supported and/or events where an extra battery isn’t a huge hurdle, SRAM edges DI2 - the replaceable battery is a winner…. It’s kinda the same argument as cars… Normally aspirated vs electric…. Gas stations are ubiquitous and it’s reliable…. And, Shimano is not an innovator in components…. Well manufactured, reliable, but slow to market…. SRAM innovates.. And, lately, their stuff works well…

      Since i've made this video, I've found the Garmin Edge devices have built in motion alarms. So hypothetically you can set the alarm when your bike is outside somewhere and if it moves enough to trigger the alarm, it will make an audible alarm and alert your phone if its connected.

    Are you rocking a helmet light?

    • @TheEnduranceStudio
      @TheEnduranceStudio 18 днів тому

      no. I only have the fenix BC26 light. I found on the AZTR that one handlebar mounted light was enough for me even in technical singletrack. I have the two fish mount on my helmet so 1) in case I break the handlebar light mount I have backup and 2) I transfer the light to my helmet when i'm setting up camp and/or have to do anything like fix a mechanical in the dark. And yes I know having the one light is a single point of failure. If the light fails, I'll be riding daylight hours only to the next nearest bike shop or outdoor store or place I can find something. This is a risk I've accepted.

I finished the Oregon Timber Trail this year and there was a ton of gear that people lost along the way, a leash would have saved them! - Extra ziplocks for carrying food along the way... so many times I wished I packed an extra. - Gaiters! The new sram red xplr addresses some of your concerns. The derailleur is tucked in shadow style, and they protect the battery better physically (not sure about water). Also, it's supposed to be a better setup that avoids bent hanger problems. However, so far, it's only in red which is $$, and it doesn't get away from the whole electronic problem which is that in addition to all the physical things that can go wrong on any system, you can have the electronics die. Normal day to day weekend warrior stuff (me), I prefer the electronic setup because maintenance amounts to battery replacement rather than cable replacements.

    Very interessting podcast and thoughts. The reason people choose electronic for ultra(races!) is that it usually works flawless and doesnt fatigue your hands than mechanical shifting. The shimano battery (i ride di2 myself, so not a hater) has a hige downside because of the battery that is conceiled in the frame. You cant charge ir so easily than swapping a sram spare battery. The other downside wirh shimano is the cables which actually introduce more components that can fail. Looking at the thin cable that feeds my derailliour makes me anxious. Even on bikepacking trips the shimano battery is a downside. You need your bike next to a power socket or leave a powerbank to charge. Imagine checking in to a hotel. They will not letnyou take your bike to your room. They will usually have a rolm to store your bike which might have power socket or not. With sram you just take your battery out and carry it to your room. Why are there almost no shimano electronic groups at unbound? Probably because sram completely has overtaken shimano with their development of wireless, gear capacity and compatibility. Currently still on shimano di2 but most likely my next groupset will be from sram. If i would go around the world on my bike, i would ride mechanical on an aluminum or even better steel bike, with a mid range shimano group set where i know i can get spare parts almost everywhere in the world. For everything else i believe electronic shifting is fine. Just my thoughts on the topic ✌🏻😊

    • @donbarnard82
      @donbarnard82 19 днів тому

      I agree about the shimano wires. Instead of a somewhat vulnerable sram battery, you have a delicate wire.

  • @jessegee179
    @jessegee179 23 дні тому

    I also use a simple padlock alarm, if cut or moved the siren is instantly loud. When not activated it’s a simple padlock hung on the frame. It’s cheap, quick and easy to carry. It can attach a bag handle to the frame too. It’s good for letting me know a theft attempt has begun. My bike has a wheel lock too, so it can’t be easily ridden away. The key lives in it so I can’t lose it. The locking mechanism can be removed with tools but that’s where the padlock alarm comes into play. That said nothing is 100%, so I ask nicely and take my bike into stores.

    This video misses one of the biggest flaws with stalker mode, presumption that everyone is only using apple products. This was a whole conversation had when airtags came out and women in tech pointed out the obvious issues in airtags, leading to stalker modes inclusion, and apple washing it hands of the issue after they released stalker mode. Iphones are comparatively rare to android devices, and tend to be skewed towards the kind of people with the disposable income to not need to steal bikes to make ends meet. The end result is airtags are usually very effective tracking devices. As for search warrants, a tracking device placed on the object consistently being in the home is in fact, pretty good probable cause, though the more likely scenario is actually getting it back from a pawn shop who then reports the stolen goods to the police.

  • @jeffersonsharp2292
    @jeffersonsharp2292 25 днів тому

    Wether it's a stalking incident or a theft, the police need to be involved anyway. Apple would know what apple id disabled the tag. If apple coordinated with law enforcement, the tag owner could report the theft and with a warrant, the police could be given tracking info on both the tag and the apple device that disabled it. Sounds like this could be an easy fix, but unfortunately it would likely involve government, so, that's where the issue lies. It seems like any good law enforcement agency would welcome this tool. The warrant is the sticking point.
