Does A Chess Computer Know What Bobby Fischer Is Doing?

I review a chess game of Bobby Fischer in his prime with chess computer analysis to help us see if a chess computer app like Stockfish knows as much as Fischer. What do you think, would modern day chess computers destroy Bobby Fischer? Enjoy more chess videos by subscribing to the Nick Butts Chess channel. Thanks and have a super chess day!

Young Bobby Fischer Defeats A World Champion!
Great opinion, even though this is a negative review I welcome your criticism to help me improve! What do you think would be a better way to do chess game reviews in the future to help players learn something, do you have a recommendation?
Awesome video, great analysis! One tiny note, at the end of the video it would have been great to explore the Qf8 line which would have given black the best chance, although it is still a forced mate. Logically, after Qf8 we would get Rxf8+, Kg7, Rxb2, and then black rook takes the white bishop. Or something close to that maybe, I feel like that's probably not the mate in 14 line exactly though?
Thanks for the great input, I will try to make sure and explore the possible final game moves more in the future!
What computer engine and interface are you using here? Very educational and fun!
Glad you enjoyed this Bobby Fischer video. I am on Chess.com using Stockfish for analysis. Thanks for commenting!
@@nickbutts64 Thanks for replying!
Woohoo! Another Capablanca review.. love it! Thanks for doing these.
Glad you like the Capablanca videos, more to come in the future! Thanks for watching and commenting!
so as far as I can tell, the reason why the computer liked h1 a lot is that black only had a dark square bishop, which would forever prevent any pinning shenanigans to the king or potential checks from the bishop. And blacks pieces are all stuck in a web of everyone is trying to defend everyone else, so its probably better for white to keep the tension and force black to weaken some squares by moving something and potentially opening the position for a more favorable attack
as for lining up the king directly with the queen, its never a real threat because the bishop that would allow a checkmate threat on that square would have to make several sequential moves to hope to get in a position to even see that pawn, so the computer does not care at all, because it knows itll never be a real threat
Great input, that makes sense to place the king on a light square when your opponent only has the dark square bishop left. Thanks for sharing your insight!
20:33 isn't this position m2 for white? Rf8
bishop pins rook to protecting the king, illegal move
At 20:33 after Larsen captured Fischer’s bishop on d4, Larsen’s bishop on d4 was pinning the rook on f2 to Fischer’s king and preventing the rook from capturing on f8. Thanks for your comment!
Great analysis and content, keep it up! 😀
Thanks for the great comment I hope you enjoy all of the videos!
One thing I’ve learned from analysis of my own games is that the computer rarely cares about king safety. Of course, it can see 16 moves ahead, so why should it? But it likes to make weakening moves that no human chess coach would advise
Outstanding point I have noticed some computer moves that leave the king open to attack but with an escape and or counterattack available but you probably should be great at tactics and have nerves of steel to play some of those lines! Thanks for commenting!
9:43 why not bishop takes on e6 forking the king and the queen?
The queen could then capture the bishop because nothing is protecting the bishop if it captures on e6. Thanks for taking time to comment.
I think it's perfectly fair to analyze any chess match with the computer. You just have to always remember that it's a tool. I liken it to sabremetrics in baseball. WAR is roughly a measure of how good a player is with higher numbers being better but it's really not that simple. Its a formula using simpler stats to try to measure how many wins a player was worth throughout the season. Just like the computer chess analysis, WAR is a tool. However it should always be remembered that these measurements mean nothing without context.
hope that it's pretty apparent I didn't finish watching the video before commenting lol
Thanks for your outstanding input! I agree that the computer is just a tool and that context is very important. More advanced technology and statistics are available today, we may as well use them!
I saw Qd2 pretty quickly but I dont think it fits the pattern. I think its more like exploiting a pinned piece
Yes these tactics puzzles are on Chess.com and sometimes the tactics categories chosen mix in some other tactics, but usually they stick to the right tactic category. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thank you for the clear explanations. It helps newbies like me learn.
Glad you enjoyed this Mikhail Tal video and thanks for commenting!
9:30 Why was Bb7 a blunder in the in-game analysis, but not recorded as one at the end?
Thanks for pointing that out! I need to make sure to hit the game review button before I begin so that all the inaccuracies, mistakes, and blunders show up in the notation. Also after Bb7 by Fischer, Smyslov could have attacked by playing Bxe6 which I should have mentioned and analyzed. Thanks for commenting.
@@nickbutts64 Thanks!
Despite what you may have been studying, the bishop pair has no added value at your level. Otherwise, it seems to me that you don't understand this opening. Why don't you just play the more straightforward 1. e4 open games....
Thanks for commenting. I am new to the Jobava London System and have just been following recommendations in the Jobava London System book by Grandmaster Simon Williams. I used to only play 1. e4 for many years and wanted to try 1. d4 for a change.
Thanks NBC! Been really enjoying these Capablanca game reviews and kudos for all the work you put into narrating them.
Glad you enjoy the Capablanca videos he was an amazing chess champion! Thanks for taking your valuable time to leave a comment!
Are you really trying to analyze Bobby by telling us what your computer says? What a joke!
Thanks for your comment. Computer analysis is a useful tool to find out what Bobby Fischer misses as even he wasn’t perfect or he would have won every game. How would you recommend analyzing?
Would you use a horse and cart to traverse 100km? or a car? "if not, What a joke!" , not many people in the world who could fully understand bobby fishers moves without a TOOL! "aka analyzing, like a car to get from A to B faster...
Name of the application please
Do you mean the Chess.com app?
First of all, thanks for the detailed commentary to this amazing game, even if I am a Tal fan, Fisher was a genius even in his prime ... By the way, may I ask you what chess softwer do have you used in the video? I have seen a lot, but this is one I have missed ... Thanks for the excelent work, really appreciate it.
Thanks, if you are a Tal fan I will definitely have to review some Tal games in the future! I use Stockfish on Chess.com for analysis but there are different settings so maybe I will have to experiment. Thanks for taking time to leave a comment!
@@nickbutts64 Oh it would be fantastic. I will look forward to it!!! 😄
The Tal video will come out at the end of the week!
If his name is Dutch then it's [OO-eh].
Thanks for helping clarify!
I like how you talked through your moves.
Glad you enjoyed!
great vid!
Glad you enjoyed!
@@nickbutts64 been going through many of your older videos and having a lot of fun solving problems. keep up the good work!
Thanks glad you are having fun and I hope the past videos are helpful!
Instructive lesson, I'd appreciate more explanation of the vulnerabilities and advantages of options as you're processing your next move though. I also thought the removal of the rook was a mistake, though I wouldn't have been able to give you a specific reason, it just looked wrong🤷
Thanks for your recommendation I will try to explain vulnerabilities and advantages more. Yes trading too many pieces off can lead to draws instead of a wins. Thanks again for your valuable input!
I LOVE BOBBY FISCHER!!!
I will have more Bobby Fischer videos in the future!
What happened to this series? It looks like you hit 1700 and are not playing any more on your profile.
I took a break in the Quest For 2000 series but will return soon! Thanks for commenting and asking!
i understood a little as i am new to chess but I found it interesting great narration.
Thanks I hope the video was helpful. Is there anything about chess you would like to see in future videos?
Nice lesson. I'd appreciate seeing the little annotations which appear on the pieces (I know the computer assessment is visible in the analysis pane, but it's easier to see when they're shown on the pieces). Also, if you could run through the possible end game past the resignation in examples like these, it might be instructive, maybe show how you might attack or defend; even though it's academic, it could be of value. Thanks again.
Thanks for commenting and your great ideas and suggestions!
On the 10th one that you got wrong, Qb6 wasn't correct because it's not a true fork, The king doesn't have to move, the rook can move to block the diagonal. Then if you try to move queen again to recheck with Qb8, the rook can block again by moving up and attacking your queen. If you try to take the pawn instead of Qb6 and the rook blocking, blacks queen can then take the pawn on c3 with check forming a queen rook battery in the process.
Thanks for your great comment and analysis good job!
You are playing all engine liness..try to play normal human like game
Thanks for taking time to comment. These moves are from a chess database of what moves human chess players chose to play most often. Do you have any examples of a chess opening line you would prefer to see in a future video?
Nice seeing small chess channels. Would you like to play some games?
Hopefully the channel keeps growing. I am busy now but have had a few people ask to play chess so after the holidays I will do some videos where I play subscribers and review the game. I will have more details on this in the future. Thanks for taking time to comment and I look forward to playing you in the future!

@@nickbutts64 Hope you don't mind my drawing attention to it, if I'd heard you say it once or twice, no problem, but when it's dozens of time per video, you understand👍
Thanks I didn’t realize how often I was saying “escape squares” in my videos! I know some repetitive words or phrases can be distracting and annoying. I’ll try to avoid that in the future. Thanks again I welcome any recommendations and suggestions!
@@nickbutts64 It's not the repetition, you understand; it's the pronunciation as "exscape", I hate to be a pedant and apologise for harping on it, but it's like gravel in my show now 😆
No problem! I will try to avoid that word, thanks for your input and taking time to comment!
Your analysis was enthralling.
Thanks! 😃
This is very interesting, but I'd like it if you would show the future moves you speculate about. Can't you continue moving the pieces? On some sites I know you can do that by pressing analysis. Thank you for an interesting video!
Thanks so much for your comment. The chess puzzles in this video just stop if you make a wrong move and then you must try again. In the future I will have to set up some chess puzzles on an analysis board so that I can show the variations like you recommend. Thanks for your valuable input!

I was looking forward to the analysis, without knowing the result...then you showed the result before the game...d'oh! How about a spoiler alert next time?
You are right I will start showing the game accuracy percentage at the end. Thanks for the good advice!
