So beautiful. I've never seen one. Show me more!
Stupendous & huge
So excited to meet him/her!!!!
Very cool!
What is the definition of fossilization? I assumed it would be absorbing surrounding minerals but if a shell is already mineral, how can it fossilize?
A fossil is a modified "version" or representation of a dead organism. Fossils can be plant imprints on sedimentary rock, internal molds of shells, or bones or shells in which some of the minerals were replaced by similar ones after the passing of time. In mollusk shells the types of crystals are replaced, and the organic fraction of the shell is also modified.
@@TheJoseHLeal thank you. That makes sense
I found a shell that looks similar without the ridged and is half the size here in Cape Cod, MA, USA. It’s huge and that one is double its size! So cool! We cleaned out the animal, and sun bleached it! It smelled horrid . We had to keep it deep in the woods for 3 months because of the stench and let the bugs clean it! Now it’s pure white almost and it’s so cool!
I love learning about my favorite things from you. You are fascinating and your shells are amazing. Thank you for doing this🐚👍🏽
What about the Junonia?
Thank you, great information
Very cool!
I am in shell heaven! Thank you for your expertise & passion for shells…this is the next best thing to being on Sanibel 🐚💗
Thank you so much, lots of useful information presented by Dr. Leal
Stunning colors. Amazing
SO beautiful!
A very interesting lecture, it really touched on a lot of different aspects related to cowries👍 a very diverse view on the topic of cowries. Thank you so much👍
fascinating!
Congratulations to all of you. What a daunting and challenging journey you have been through. Your hearts must have been breaking as you realized the degree of compromise to the structure, the live specimens and the community as a whole. As a collector of shells, a retired scientist and past curator of a different collection, I would love to have lived on your side of the country. I would have been rickety, cerebral help, but I’d have been there. Best wishes for the future. You have a unique community and collection. Please continue to fight for both.
This was excellent. I learned a lot from the presentation. I am traveling to Belize for the first time soon and will share this lecture onto the travel fb pages on info on Belize.
Me too! 💚🐚
Thank you for the information and the presentation!
Thinking of you all. Thank you for posting this so those elsewhere can understand what happened. Onward indeed and wishing you the best!
Stunning images and information Jose. You are an Explorer of the Exquisite and we thank you for sharing your passion 🐚
Amazing!
Trying to shake Sam's paw.
I really enjoyed this presentation! Thank you!
I agree with Ryan, gorgeous shell!! So glassy. I adore the janthina and wentletrap. Such favorites. I love the glossy shells and used to wonder if they were fakes. This was long before I was collecting shells. Ha!
This is the best museum I've ever visited. I love seashells! I love Sanibel-Captiva.
Shellwork is so therapeutic 🧜♀️🐚 Wonderful presentation. Thank you.
The pH scale is log so every whole number is a power/factor of ten. By definition pH is the negative exponent of the hydrogen ion concentration. For instance, pH 9 is 10^-9 or 1 part per billion, 0.000000001. pH 8 is 10^-8 or 10 parts per billion, 0.000000010. To go from pH 9 to pH 8 is factor of 10 or 1,000%!!!! Makes 26% look trivial. Ocean “acidification” of pH 8.2 to pH 8.1 is a decrease in alkalinity equal to 1 ppb of H ions. I’m fairly certain the ocean flora and fauna don’t even notice.
Are the Junonias carnivores?
Yes, they feed on other mollusks such as Shark Eyes, Lettered Olives, and others
