Figure Heads, Part 2: Construction
Переглядів 11921 день тому
This is the second part of my Figure Heads where I show you how to make them. The only thing you really need that's unusual is the brass rod. I use 1/8-inch thick stock from Admiral Metals (admiralmetals.com) in Woburn, MA. Also in this video is an update from one of my students, Cynthia Chopra, with her garden sculpture. The Evolving Image

From the dawn of our existence, art has provoked, prodded, and kicked all the sensations of life, sight, hearing, touch, and fragrance to explore that dark and endless world surrounding the familiar experience of what we know. Art is that ruthless, miraculous transforming principle of evolving life. The beginning of this video is from a Wellesley-Weston Lifetime Learning lecture in the spring o...

My desire is to stimulate you to look at things as they might be, what they suggest, and not say to yourself, I’m going to do stained glass and make a thing, like a butterfly or a bowl of grapes. I want you to make a jump into the abstract. This is the way to achieve self-expression. In this video I talk about using hand-blown stained glass sheets. Here is a wonderful video on how this glass is...
They Speak!

One of the things I’ve learned in sculpture over many years is that you have to let it tell you what to do, where to go. And if you go in the wrong direction, it tells you that. If you give it time, it really will speak to you. They truly do have a personality and they really do come up with something that is a name. So pretty!!
Beatifull 👏👏👏👏
U might contact an industrial glass mfg. for scrap . I would like to be more helpful ,, keep in touch Joe
Beautiful ~ thank you
I love it!
Glass wrapped with copper foil seems to be the best option. Copper must be bright clean, for a good joint . Joe
Absolutely stunning what are the big chunks of Glass called please I wonder whereabouts in Australia I could get some
😂 Isabel is present in everything I have done. Thanks for recognizing it
Awesome!
So wonderful. Before I started creating music I was a sculptor myself. I had a studio full of art. But over the years music completely took over. However It has always been my dream to make stained glass. I have been setting up my stained glass studio the last few months. And during the time I am not playing melodies ill be in the studio mastering my glass skills. What you have done here is amazing and inspiring to me. And I hope you take it as a compliment when I say I would like to emulate some of your work. (not copy) but take notes of your style. Keep up the good work you have a new fan in me. Have a great day.
Music is a beautiful activity to enhance the stained glass experience . I have a more detailed version on the way. Thanks. I have 94 years of life experience.
Hi Joseph, What a wonderful artist you are! I’ve never seen anyone making 3D sculptures like yours. They are amazing! Thank you for sharing! This also left me puzzled - how on earth did you join those glass sculptures in the wooden frames? It seems really tricky to get that precision for rod holes if you inserted the ready-made sculpture into the frame. Or did you build the sculpture into the frame? How did you manage that? All best wishes to you!
I build the frame the size needed for the composition usually 6 inches deep. Holes are drilled into. The frame the diameter of brass rod of a thickness necessary to support the composition : industrial brass rod can be found any diameter I n. 10 foot length. I hope to give more information via video . Thanks for your interest, Joe f
Joe, I'm so happy when I discover you've posted another video. I love them all and especially this one with your autobiography. Seeing photos of you and Isabelle was a treat. Thank you!
Julian, thanks for your comment , I am new to this world of popular imagery and appreciate your comment . Joe

Amazing video with amazing vibes, keep it up! :)
Thanks never know how more serious presentations will work
How amazing is this?!!! What a beautiful artform, I've never seen anyone use stained glass in this way! Absolutely stunning! What a creative mind this man has,and the talent to make it come to life! Would love to see these art pieces in person!✨💞✨
This is so interesting and inspiring to me, thank you for sharing!
Stop using plastic, only glass u know iam right.
I would have agreed with you, was reluctant to use plastic, but as I esplaine in the wind sculpture video, plastic is less threatening to exhibitions. It is also lighter than glass and allows one to build less support. But nothing is as exciting a s glass. thanks and build big things. Joe

Incredible!
Thank you!
I absolutely adore your work Joseph ! This is a favourite and I am feeling so inspired seeing your videos. Your work reminds me of Da Vinci somehow ,I’m in awe of those blown glass inclusions. They look like the earth created them naturally in geological process, like the fossilised sap from an ancient tree with that amazing amber glass. Very cool!
Thank you so much!
Thanks Utube is spectacular for the yin yang of good and bad. I have experienced so much of the good I hope to share it and art is my medium . Welcome as a co conspirators Joe
Just amazing! I’m curious how you made the bronze wire go into your base, what is the base material? Keep coming up with more video 😊
My bases are blocks of stone or heavy wood, I build the sculptures in averticl position ,, as a painter would paint a picture. I use brass rod, obtained from an industrial supplier, diameters around 1 eight dia. easily bent. I hope to have more pieces on Utube. Courage. its worth the anxiety.
Hi Joseph I love the name twisty treats all yr sculptures are magnificent, at the moment i do stained glass & leadlighting ...but then i started to dabble in galvanised wire work & natural fabric materials sculpture & i love it 😊😊
Wonderful! Thanks!
If you are soldering, I reccomend brass rod or wire, galvanixed wire can be hard to solder ... it oxidizes rapidly. Hope this is helpful, Joe
Hi Joseph Do you use gem stones in these sculptures, im curious to know where you get such big chunks of glass to work with 😊
I have tried to use jemstones , but , other than in jewelery, they attract too much attention. I have collected chunks of glass over 60 years,
Wow Joseph to hear you talk about colour is so inspirational, my love of stained glass came from when i was at Sunday School in Church, i wish id known at an earlier age i could become a stained glass artist, i just cant get enuff colour in any medium im working in 😊
Thanks! It's never too late to try!
@@JosephFergusonGlass yes and now I am. I've been making glass projects for 2 years now & I'm hooked 😁
@@JosephFergusonGlass😅
Hi Joseph So they are copper rods not tubing and what do you use to bend it in shapes because its quite strong, & i am not 😂
You can get brass rod in various diameters of thickness, from and industrial supplier, I would reccomend I eighth, or sizes around that, under of over. You will be able to bend these by hand, ,, I am 94 as the 15th of this month and no muscle builder. I will be showing more three dimensional sculptures that might help. Working with glass this way is direct like painting and thrilling, so keep it up, Joe
@@JosephFerguson-tu8ug Thankyou so much Joe, Happy Birthday for the 15th, your an Aries like my Husband his Birthday is the 18th. I love yr work it's captivating & different & I like something different to what others do, I'm excited to try, Thankyou for the encouragement 😊😁
Wow im in awe of yr work, i like the little models, can i ask ... how do i get solder to stick to old copper tubing so i can try something with old bits of glass & globs i thought i might trybending bits of copper tubing & wire given to me from a friend, how can i orepare this copper would i have yo foil those pieces and then tin them is that the only way ?Thankyou 😊😊
You ask the crucial question. Soldering requires bare metal, Metals oxidize quickly and that prevents the solder from bonding. Your soldering iron myst be tinned , it surface should be bright so it picks up the solder and transfers heat to the metal. Keep at it courage Joe
@@JosephFerguson-tu8ug Thankyou Joe, I will have a go at it, thanks for taking the time to reply 😁

I love your work and each of your videos. Your understanding of form and color combined with your peaceful voice and explanations touch my artist heart! Thank you. You mentioned your trip to Turkey. Was that the Longyear adventure? I was on that trip with you and Isabel.
Ellen, thanks for your comments, It seems a long time since the Turkey trip. But it was wonderful, I keep running into references to places we visited.. Capadocia for interest. I am new to this Utube venture so grateful to get feedbacl. It is a wonderful way to get a lifetime of work and thought out to share it. Keep in touch I hope to have many more videos. One already there is a poem by Isabel, speaking in roses. hope you like it. regards Joe

Thank you so much!
Your style and colour choices are incredibly beautiful, love the lines, the shapes... Stunning in my opinion 😍😍😍 thank you for sharing these gorgeous pieces 😊😁⭐
Thank you!
I like listening to your narrations. They are very peaceful, meditation like, and sometimes seem like prose poems. Thank you!
Glad you like them!
I like the way your intuition led you to Manbiguity. Maybe Manbiguity uses the pronouns they and them, in that contemporary way, like in the first chapter of Genesis, where it reads, “male and female created he them." One could read the original text as if separate males and females didn't emerge until Chapter 2. It could suggest a more transcendent view of the wholeness of the individual. I love your new word. Thank you!
🤩😎😍😍😍😍 Absolutely stunning. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent and explaining your work in great detail alongside your thoughts. ♥️
Thanks so much 😊
Very inspirational ! Thank you Joseph
Glad you enjoyed it!
