Directory guide for the algooo
Hey Frey, i wanna ask if im starting out to learn SEO - are they any course you recommend me taking?
@@DannyChowmrchow I’ve never taken an SEO course so I wouldn’t be able to recommend any. What I did was just spent like 100 hours learning through UA-cam back in 2022 and started a directory site as a knowledge playground to understand which SEO principles worked and which didn’t. It sucks to say, but SEO is changing really rapidly these days. Many basic principles still work but most SEO advice I read online is just so wrong. Lots of people who share advice don’t actually own and operate their own website, experimenting with their own SEO tactics. My rec is to use UA-cam, go down the rabbit hole of on page optimization, backlinks, internal linking, and keyword research. I will also be making vids on directory SEO in the future
boring business?
Directory of a directory works?
@@SharkSwayze have seen people do this, don’t recommend. Not easy to monetize. Not a lot of search volume. Doesn’t seem worth it to me just from what I know from prior keyword research involving “directory”
Thanks for sharing. Question: since Wordpress has no code templates and since you did all the work of scraping and cleaning and enriching the data, why did you hire a word press dev instead of just pasting the data in? I assume you can just paste the data in right?
@@bobbyw1074 yeah totally, you can just paste the data yourself for no cost. But as you can imagine for this niche, pasting 5000 listings worth of data would take a very long time. Even at 100 listings, it’s a lot lol I pay for speed so I can start another website directory build immediately after
did you do any link building to your directory sites?
@@einthwil yeah most def! I let it brew for a few months first to see how far on page optimization takes it If it naturally ranks on the 3rd page for example and stays there for a month or so, that’s when I know it’s backlink building time
@FreyChu did you use Pbn? What type of links?
@FreyChu what type of links did you use? Pbn?

What do you think is the best WordPress directory template and plugin?
@@mohamadmj8790 haven’t tried many of them tbh. I mainly like to build out my own templates on Wordpress rather than using a plugin. Next video is on formatting a static directory on Wordpress
there are billion dollar worth directories like airbnb. you can not achieve that type of results just using seo. you need paid ads, social media and much more
So basically ChatGPT pulling stuff out their ass again 😂 I don't understand how people especially would trust numbers coming out of that thing
Great video. Excuse me if this question has been asked before but what is the minimum amount of monthly searches for a particular keyword or keyword phrase that you think is worth targeting. I see many somewhat easy possibles with less than 10k monthly searches. Thanks in advance.
@@jeffreylhayes depends on how you plan on monetizing your directory. Displays ads, I try and target 30-50k monthly searches because that’s the range where you hit a $1k/month+ directory. Could be much less if you’re incorporating affiliate plays, selling leads, etc
I already spend my day in Data so I'm just gonna jump in the boat as well, why not? Thank you for your inspiration.
Hi Frey, where were you born and where do you live now?
Another banger video. Now i am getting greedy to see you build whole WordPress website with this big data. I would love to see how you monetize and display ads on the website. Thank you for doing this for us.😃
@@jddude9 thanks man! that’s the plan, but I think it’s gonna take a couple months for the full build out. Also have some concerns with building this in public will affect how it would actually rank organically, if that makes sense. We’ll see how it turns out
I'm subscribing to your channel because I watched two of your videos and found both of them useful.
This is a really good video, thanks for sharing Frey. Super cool.
So pretty much look for industries or niche businesses that have a lackluster or overall middling web presence overall? Like "bounce castle rentals near me" or "mold abatement hershey pa" and build off of that? For instance, with mold abatement, you would focus on second city sort of locales (e.g. instead of Pittsburgh you would focus on Johnstown, PA or Altoona, PA). You essentially offer arbitrage in getting the customer closer to where they need to be. In that, do you try to focus on local/homegrown businesses over national chains/franchises? Or do you leverage those chains and their pull to bring more traffic to your directory?
@@rick.knowlton yeah there’s a lot to unpack here, but absolutely you can build a local directory and sell leads for those niches. I personally go for high traffic keywords. That way I can build it for high traffic and it’s really passive once you rank #1 for your target keyword. I can already tell without searching it up that ‘mold abatement’ and ‘bounce castle rentals’ wouldn’t have enough search volume for me, with the style of directory site I like building You can totally target chains, or branded keywords, to increase traffic to your directory. Again it’s so dependent on your niche and how you’re trying to monetize your directory
Another great video Frey! Question: Do you use any plugin for managing the directory listings in Wordpress? I bought GeoDirectory and it's pretty complicated so I'm still trying to figure it out.
Hey Frey, nice one!! You need to work on some stuff: use AI to identify dogs or full parks on those photos, you will probably get more parks without dog/park in the name. If you can grab the reviews, AI can also help you build a list of keywords for each dog park. Work on some SQL skills, it would help you a lot to just query filter things on that database. SQLite is free, easy and awesome. That will also help to easily edit (update) those lines with your selected keywords, after counting and prioritizing them to get the most important. On a (maybe) 15.000 parks (assuming you deleted a lot of good stuff), you should find a bunch of other keywords important for dog owners…
can you please share the website template design for the dog park niche?
@@einthwil I’m gonna create a custom template on Wordpress for this because of how much data there is, this is the next video :) formatting data on wp, etc
Enjoying your work! Trying to build an area directory
Great video! You don't have to enrich manually. You can use LLMs to do the enrichment for you. When scraping the data, also pull the review tags and the top 10 to 20 reviews. The file size of the scrape data may become unmanageably large, so you may have to use tools to chunk the data into separate files. Once you clean the data, you can then use a tool like GPTforWork or the ChatGPT API, to have an LLM read the top reviews for each row, and then answer simple yes/no questions based on the reviews. (Eg: Based on the reviews, is this an off-leash dog park?) If you can use the ChatGPT API directly, your cost for enriching the entire 5K rows of data will probably be less than $20. Also, you don't have to use Outscraper to get the data. There are sellers on Fiverr who can give you the exact same data for $50. Obviously, quality varies, but if you shop around a bit, you will find very reliable sellers. And lastly, in my opinion, this is a very risky business model. Given how commoditised information has become in the AI age, you will need way more value additions than shown in this example to actually have a sustainable directory business. There is absolutely nothing stopping Google from using its LLM to answer people's questions about dog parks (or any other business listed on Google Maps), and give them pretty much all the information that one can possibly scrape from reviews -- after all, they already have all the info on their own platform. Edit: Also, using regex can help you simplify cleaning. You can use any free LLM to help you generate a regex string that matches for multiple words like dog, pooch, puppy, mutt, canine, etc etc. This will retain a lot of relevant, useful rows, instead of paying good money to scrape them and then throwing them away.
Hey Frey thanks for the video! I think outscraper might be skirting around the Places API TOS by not "caching or storing" the data they send to you, and not selling the data, instead selling the service of pulling the data. However if you use the data you might violate Google's TOS, should probably be careful. Anyways GL!
Hi Frey can you monetize directory websites with google adsense?
Hi Frey, what do you think about using a CMS like Wordpress compared to using dedicated platforms like edirectory, brilliant directories, etc for building a directory?
I use wordpress for all my directories! Never tried any dedicate platform, just tried Geodirectory which is a WP plugin for programmatic directory builds
I have not seen how lovable can clone your own existing wp landing page, and then add Supabase & Edge Functions to create Dynamic duplicate pages based of different geographic locations ...
I think your videos are great!!!
What's it called?
Dumb question… when you are getting info.. why are you paying?
It costs money for the scraper to run. Someone has to set up the software, pay for the servers, APIs, etc etc. You can dramatically reduce those costs if you know how to code and work with the Google Maps API yourself.
Hey mate, thanks for sharing. I was wondering, how did directories get impacted by the HCU (helpful content update by Google)? Were many impacted? Or was it neutral / they actually see ranking increases in general? I ask as affiliate and blog content sites generally went down. I'm curious about directories. Thanks in advance for sharing.
Man, you came again with gold mine 🎉 thanks ❤
YOOOO WHATEVER YOU DO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FINISH OUT THIS SERIES from validating to building website to pgrammatic SEO to taking the #1 Google Search result. YOU ARE THE MAN
How do you upload the CSV to the website?
You can use a directory plugin like Geodirectory (there's a lot out there, this is just the one i use). Or you can hire a wordpress dev to write a custom script and automate publishing static pages for your directory
@@FreyChu Why not use a plugin like WP All Import? Or something similar instead of custom script?
@@Mackancheesey that can work too :) I’ve just never used wp all import, but from a quick look it looks solid
@frey chu.. Have any of your sites been hit with the ongoing Google updates where it impacts your ranking and traffic?
I came here after you did a reaction video of a directory video that gregg isenberg did withe another person and he stressed not spending ao much time on it until you justify the traffic. Do you put all this time and money just to test it?
Yeah, for the most part. I'll spend a lot of time researching and coming up with an SEO strategy based on competition and keyword research, then spend like 1-2 months building out the directory.
Bro please teach from scratch cause I can't understand which panel are you using like it doesn't look like c panel
Hey Fery, fellow web dev here, thanks for sharing a ton of info here. I also have some sites but they're not in the directory related niches and just mentioning for context. So I watched a couple of your videos in detail and just have a couple questions/concerns: 1. Building out a directory using "Near me", doesn't the default google and google maps does a much better job at that? The google listing comes up above the fold in 1-4th position, It also has our exact location whereas a directory site can only get a broad location based on an ip address unless the user allow us location access by clicking the prompt window button, which is a big inconvenience and people usually just go back to google maps. 2. I personally have never used a website to locate anything and always rely on google maps for that - do you personally not use maps and instead rely on a directory site for something? Can you give me a couple random examples, that actually makes sense. 3. As google is improving more and more of their services (Generative AI changes in SERP & Maps), don't you think it's risky to even venture for this at this point - 2025 onwards? I mean yeah for now it'd have a high chance of success but we are now at openai o3 point and so spending the time and resources on this would have a hard time to remain successful on the long run. Looking forward to your thoughts, thanks man!
Is 122,916 the max it can spit out? I get the same number for every pull
Not sure actually. This is the biggest data set I've ever scraped
@@FreyChu Then do you reccomend not doing nationwide and focusing on certain states first. To ensure you're not missing data from the scrape
@@eNVy100 Yeah you can go that route, check which locations have highest keyword volume and lowest diffculty and nail those pages first
why not focus on the major cities first? And then expand… or maybe 10-20 parks in a city
Not a bad idea, but major cities are generally harder to rank for on google. Google does not like traffic-less pages, so if you target small cities it's like super easy to rank on the first page quickly and start getting some traffic. More traffic, more trust, easier it is to rank for larger pages imo
amazing video! :) looking forward to more videos like this! Very interesting. If you manage to find a good way to automate this step more, please share it here on youtube! Would be nice to see! Thanks man for the value.
Definitely need to level up my automation game, will do. Thank you!
Frey with another classic 🔥
There is a scraper I bought for about $30USD which also scrapes all the review keywords also
Drop the link mate!
I too would love the link
Great video man! Is it okay to use those photos from google maps?
From a quick search it looks okay to use. So far haven't had issues on any of my sites using them!
@@FreyChu thx =)
waste of money apify is free
... for $10 worth of scrapes, yeah, it's free. Try getting all the rows of data you want with that budget.
What themes are you using for your directories and which hosting platform?
Hey @FreyChu, as you mentioned to use the copy pasting the data from Google Maps Listings to the directory, is that allowed to copy that data like reviews and images and store them on the site as that against to google terms. there is no clear answer for this anywhere.
I haven't had any issues on my directory websites using google maps photos and reviews. Probably in the gray area, but not completely sure to be honest

Pretty cool. I think people definitely need to start exploring ways to branch out for side income that requires low maintenance like this.
Love your content! I followed your advice and found a niche with an available exact match domain but the domain name is over 20 letters long. Do I go for a shorter domain that isn't an exact match or stick with the exact match even if it's a mile long? Thanks!
