All the best zoos around the world are members of various international breeding programs for the more vulnerable species... it's likely that this Giraffe birth was part of such a program. The purpose of such programs is to selectively breed enough individuals to eventually recreate a viable wild population.

Can't watch it, Truk, am so traumatised by recent events on "my" osprey nest. So I really appreciate your warning. Thus far in life my experience of predator/prey interaction and sibling rivalry must have been santised by the BBC etc, watching it in real time, uncensored, is quite a different matter. However, the seeds of rationalism have been planted ;-)
