There are quite a few things you can do for free on your birthday in Switzerland from free boat rides in first class to free rides on mountain trains and cable cars. Since it was Graham’s birthday, we decided to take advantage of this. All you need is a valid form of ID, in our case a passport, and off you go.
We opted for a free return trip to Schilthorn early in the morning so we could combine this with the buffet brunch that they do. We also had a voucher from Migros which meant Emma got a reduced rate too. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us and was cloudy for most for the morning. Saying that, it did hide all the construction works going on at Schilthorn.
The brunch was great and contained everything you would expect, cereal, meat, cheese, salmon, hot food, cake, bread, drinks and plenty of bottles of Sekt. Classic start to the day.
Whilst at Schilthorn, you may as well take a look at the James Bond Experience, an interactive attraction covering the use of the Schilthorn during the filming of “On Her Majesties Secret Service”. There are plenty of things to do and look at but we found some of the activities didn’t work properly. Buttons not working etc. Hopefully this will all be fixed once the construction work is complete on the new cable way.
Once done it was off to Wilderswil to catch the train to Schynige Platte. Again, this was a free return trip but you also got a surprise in the restaurant at the top. Thankfully the cloud had sort of lifted so we did get some great views and also managed a short round walk whilst there.
Overall a fantastic day.
