Lieutenant Arthur Vincent Leopold Hull, a former farmer, was part of the 18th Australian Infantry Battalion (NSW), 5th Australian Brigade, 2nd Australian Division which took part in the Battle of Poelcappelle on the 9th of October 1917. THE BATTLE OF VIMY RIDGE, 9-12 APRIL 1917 Tim Cook Many historians and writers consider the Canadian victory at Vimy a defining moment for Canada, when the country emerged from under the shadow of Britain and felt capable of greatness. Canadian troops also earned a reputation as formidable, effective troops because of the stunning success. But it was a victory at a terrible cost, with more than...
Breendonk Concentration Camp Belgium
Переглядів 4 тис.2 роки тому
The fort of Breendonk is located along the ancient highway Brussels - Antwerp. It is perhaps the only camp which remains totally intact because at first Breendonk was a military fort and the buildings are built using concrete. For the German occupation administration, Breendonk was a "waiting" camp (Auffangslager) designed to receive Jews and political prisoners before their transfer to Germany...

Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery "Caberet Rouge" was a small, red-bricked, red-tiled café that stood close to this site in the early days of the First World War. The café was destroyed by shellfire in March 1915 but it gave its unusual name to this sector and to a communication trench that led troops up the front-line. Commonwealth soldiers began burying their fallen comrades here in March 1916. ...
The Digger Memorial Bullecourt
Переглядів 3422 роки тому
This is the Bullecourt 'digger'. Looking out from the Australian Memorial Park over the fields of Bullecourt in France, the statue recalls the thousands of Australians who fought here in April and May 1917 in the first and second battles of Bullecourt. They captured a couple of square kilometres of trenches from the Germans, trenches which formed a small section of the formidable 'Hindenburg Li...

The Somme and In Flanders Battlefield Documentary Part 1 - 2008
You can pick up more things the second time you read a book after a gap of twenty years. This reflects the time that you have studied a particular topic. The subject area for me is my four uncles in World War One. Stephen and Andrew Tognolini both veterans of Gallipoli. Stephen in the 21st Battalion, and Andrew in the 24th Battalion. On the Western Front in France and Belgium, they would be joined by their brothers John/Jack Tognolini in the 57th Battalion and Henry Phillips in the 60th Battalion. The book is To The Last Ridge by Walter Hubert Downing, Military Medal, Sergeant in the 57th Battalion, in his book he has a Roll of Honour of the 57th's War Dead that includes John/Jack Tognolini, Military Medal, Killed In Action on the Fourth Anzac Day 25-4-1918 at Villers-Bretonneux, France. Downing AKA Jimmy and John/Jack were awarded their Military Medals at Polygon Wood during the 57th's involvement in the Battle of Passchendaele later in 1917. The knowledge I have picked up since I first read To The Last Ridge is that I know instinctively that an Australian Battalion is a thousand soldiers, battalions were formed into brigades of four battalions, and then divisions of five brigades. So Stephen's 21st Battalion and Andrew's 24th Battalion were part of the 6th Brigade along with the 22nd and 23 Battalions. They were in the 2 Division. John/Jack & Jimmy's 57th Battalion and Henry's 60th Battalion were part of the 15th Brigade along with the 58th and 59th Battalions. They were in the 5th Division. So I reread these words from the Last Ridge it affected me. ‘Against the black horror of bitter sacrifice that was Bullecourt, a thousand gallant deeds comes fourth. One could speak of the 2nd Division, which repulsed eighteen attacks in 24-hours,- of the 6th Brigade, which, though surrounded and with three quarters of its number wounded or killed, fought back for hours until all the Germans lay dead in heaps….’ Jimmy points out an Australian battalion after Pozieres, Mouquet Farm and Fromelles was at Bullecourt ‘600 in number.’
We are doing the same thing. We are here to relax and fix our house
Oh my god my house
We are there right now I went on mt noorat 3 times
1:10:44 These men, by my search, received VCs. In that case, they seemed to have missed (as I am a New Zealander) VC Donald Brown 1916 after action High Wood. Maybe because it was gazetted in 1917, don't know. Great job with this, I really value it. It sure is an amazing and important place to visit.
I have since looked into this. Brown's action was at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, just down the road from Pozières.
Damn bro i played this in battlefield
3 Great videos Steve im heading back to Albert in November after my first visit in May,given me a few tips as to where things are in relation to each other.
