Join us on our journey while we learn all things chicken. We never knew how much fun chickens were to have around the house. We decided to get them so that we could have eggs, which would be most people's reason for getting them. What we didn't know was the joy and fun that they would bring to our small city homestead. We want to share with you our adventures with these funny, friendly, lively characters.
It's a Snowtastic Kind of Day!
The chickys are upset and 2.0 is very loud about her displeasure. I try to hang out with them for a bit to settle them down. They do decide to peek out for a minute later in the afternoon. Follow along on our journey.

i keep alot of straw in my chicken house, in the winter...they love curling up and staying cozy..we get temps below 0 and i have never lost one from the cold yet

HI NEW SUBSCRIBER WHEN DO THE CHICKENS START LAYING THIER EGGS AND WHEN DO THEY SLOW DOWN.
Chickens will start laying their eggs at about 16 to 18 weeks of age, depending on the chicken breed. I have experienced a slow down in egg production about a month after our first freeze, but it warmed back up in our area. I am not sure what area of the country you are in, so that will probably depend on the weather factors in your area. When It is really cold outside, I still may get 1 or 2 eggs. That is also dependent upon the breed. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Rarely gets down below 15 degrees around here but it has hit 0 a few times over the past couple of years. These crazy birds seem to like it. Keeping them cooled down in summer is the tough part. They start panting like dogs when it gets over 70. lol
Yes, I had that happen this summer too. I was so scared they were going to die from heat exhaustion. This is our first year with them, so we didn't even know that they would get so hot. We are learning so much from these guys.
Make plenty of shade available and lots of water mostly. Most of mine spend a lot of time in the woods or under my shed. I hose down the runs every day if it's not raining and keep a couple of shallow pans full of water. Some of them like to jump in and splash around. They make a mess of it that you have to clean out daily though cuz they are definitely gonna drink it too. They aren't all that picky ya know. Poo water is an acquired taste I reckon. lol

Those are dried mealworms. They also get some black sunflower seeds for a treat too.
what kind od hens are they?? how old are they ?? they look good
The 4 colorful ones are different breeds. Red is a Welsummer, Blackie is a Black Sexlink, and I am not sure about 2.0 and Marble. I do know that 2.0 is also called an Easter Egger and is a mixed breed. The 3 Grey looking ones are Lavender Orpingtons. They are all less than a year old. We got 4 of them in April and the 3 Lavender Orps in May. Thanks for watching.
