K9K - Metro Pulse | IDM Break | Octatrack | Jamuary #1
I’m participating in Jamuary this year, but kinda in my own terms.
Since most of my videos are already short jam sessions, I’m using Jamuary as an opportunity to spend more time on my jams and maybe even develop them into full tracks.
Jamuary #1:
I’ve learned a lot through my UA-cam channel by doing these 10-minute challenges, and I’ve discovered a new approach to making music on the Octatrack. In this track, I tried to incorporate: creating drum tracks using limited samples, P-locking starting positions, and speeding up samples by pitching them up. These are actually the very basics of what the OT can do, but they’re powerful enough that I have never feel the need to dive deeper into this machine :)
All the harmonic elements are made using the Korg M1 and Monopoly VSTs, and the drum tracks are percussion samples I found on Splice. Everything is chopped up and mangled on the OT afterwards.
I really like how percussive the track has turned out. The unquantized playback (by pitching things up) creates an unpredictable swing that really brings the groove to life.
The background video was shot on an NS night train as it passed through a long tunnel. It took me way too long to figure out how to sync it to the beat, but I guess I’ve gained some extra experience points in Adobe Premiere as well.
Thanks for listening!

Making music using only 2 samples, in 10 mins - Octatrack

I’m challenging myself to battle the infinite possibilities of music creation by limiting my options, by using only 2 samples. This is an older video where I called samples "loops" and I experimented with yellow subtitles (Hong Kong sub style haha). I’m challenging myself to create a 180 Bpm breakcore style track in 10 minutes, using only 2 samples. This isn’t a full track, but more of an idea or a starting point. I hope you enjoy what I’ve come up with! Let me know your thoughts in the comments, it would be very helpful! I’m challenging myself to battle the infinite possibilities of music creation by limiting my options. This time, I created a sketch using only two loops I found on Splice: one percussive loop and one melodic loop. This isn’t a full track, but more of an idea or a starting point. In this 10-minute challenge, I’m taking a bit of a deeper dive by using an LFO to modulate the filter width. Still pretty basic compared to what the OT can really do 🙃 I didn’t pre-slice or use a slice grid, just using the starting position parameter. The sample is a fragment of an unfinished track that I made in Ableton. I used the plugins Microtonic by Sonic Charge and the Korg M1. If you’re ...

Another 10-minute challenge where I try to make music using only one sample. The sample is a loop from an unfinished project I made a while ago. (in Ableton) The Octatrack is a very complex machine, but here I’m only using the very basics. Even with simple techniques like P-locking the starting positions, you can have so much fun with a workflow that other samplers can’t match (or at least, not...

I’ve dusted off the Model:Cycles and I’m having a great time with it. It’s a synth that has a very limited and distinct sound, but I find this limitation to be very inspiring. It's fun to try pushing this synth to make music that it actually can't do, and then it surprises you with something totally different! I used Ozone 9 after recording to boost the volume and add a bit more to the mids. #m...

Quick jam made entirely on the Octatrack, using sounds I sampled from UA-cam. It’s a bit rough around the edges since I used the raw samples as they are. #minimalhouse #octatrack #dawless #elektron
That was brilliant, well done! I only just started learning the OT which is quite time consuming lol
@@PiotrstrashcanŚmietnikPiotra Yes but everything will make sense once you get your head wrapped around it! Have fun with the OT 😁
A bit of an upbeat 'Ring the Alarm' rhythm sorta thing you got going there?
@@davefave4351 haha depends on from which artist you mean, Beyonce? 😁
@K9K-trax Original, Tenor Saw, Techniques label (I think) It sounds familiar, has that production 'feel' - I had to sell a reggae collection in the 90s (divorce) and my memory's a bit rusty; it'll give me an excuse to scour my remainders and replacements...
@ i listened to it and I get your point! It shares the same chords, i think! Very interesting comparison, thanks for sharing 😊
@K9K-trax It is a real cool little box. Nice one!
@ thank you man, I really appreciate that!! :)
Amazing stuff. Any recommendations on splice packs that have these types of percs on them?
Thanks, man! For this track, I actually used some pretty generic drum loops. Subtle beats without overly harsh transients works the best. Keep the envelopes very short. I never go for full packs since I’ll probably only use about 30% of the sounds anyway 😆 What really makes this track stand out is the Latin percussion I pitched up. It adds a unique “break” vibe without using the Amen break. I think the mallets from the M1 also adds a lot of percussive character here. I might do a track breakdown video of this one!
beautiful work
@@totaled_camry thats very flattering. Thank you my friend 🤟
@K9K-trax just realized I haven't been subscribed until now, all your OT compositions are really inspiring and high quality!

I found this balloon advertisement and I just chopped it up and change the colors to make it look hyper 😁
@ are you using resolve for editing orrr?
@ im using Adobe Premiere Pro. It was a pain in the ass to do this because I’m cutting everything manually and aligning it on the beat. I’m sure there is software that do this automatically for you but I have to do more research on it 🙃
@ nice. Great OT work. I’m about to dust mine off and try some of your tricks. Your techniques are inspiring.

I actually liked it when your knob detuned your sample with a mind of its own, think the piece could have incorporated some more dissonance, that high layer wasn’t doing so much for me when it was in tune.
@@jantuitman I kind of agree! I’m always a bit hestitant with detuned sounds, although I always think its sounds good when listening to other artists. Maybe nice to experiment with it the next time!

Do i understand correctly that u dont slice the sample first? because i have been slicing for some reason the way you are doing it feels more intuitive for this kind of break stuff then the more hphop style slicing. Great vid. Thanks!!!
@@IINTERLACED Yes no pre-slicing indeed! I think this method is more unpredictable and fun! Also I’m too lazy to slice in manually haha. Thank you very much 🤟
@K9K-trax This is amazing, somehow exactly what i wanted but i felt stuck in slicing because i thought it was the only way to make breaks and incorperate p-locks etc. Thanks for saving me headaches hahah. Fuck yeah im too lazy for that shit too hahahah
Man what the hell, i looked up ur stuff on cuz i like it. You based in Rotterdam too aint ya? What a coincidence. Anyway the stalker that followed ur socials is me hahaha cool stuff dude! Cool to have you in the neighbourhood! Always down to jam some if ur up for it :)

@ exactly what i want to pair it with :)
I'm a fan!! Love you videos
I’ve been really enjoying your videos and find them really inspiring - thank you! When I got my octatrack, I thought i needed to kind of use it like a “mini daw” and try to do everything painstakingly in there and until I saw your videos I didn’t see the possibilities of using prepared material that I already made in ableton…it weirdly felt like cheating at first for some reason to my beginner mind. It plays to the strengths of the device and lets every tool excel at what it’s good at, from the music I’ve seen you make.
That’s so good to hear! To be honest, I haven’t used my OT much since I bought it 4 years ago. Like you, I made it way too complex for myself, to the point where I got demotivated to use it. Recently, I decided to pick it up again and started with the very basics of what the OT sequencer can do. I was surprised at how much fun I’m having with it now! This channel definitely motivated me to do this, and hearing from others like you that it inspired you only motivates me even more!
Oh, and as long as you make the sound your own, the source doesn’t matter-it’s definitely not cheating! 😁
@K9K-trax I've had mine for four years as well, same situation. I'm determined to approach OT from a different angle this year, using it not as a song arranger but as a sound and rhythm design lab. It's never going to replace Deluge or Drambo for me as a DAW but videos like yours and Max Marco's helped me realize that it doesn't really need to, to still be fun and useful.
Awesome mate, very inspiring! this kind of thing is really were the octatrack shines i think, squeezing as much variation as you can out of just two samples but it sounds like a whole multitracked session.
Nice to hear it inspired you man! I am sometimes also surprised of how little effort you need to make something nice on the OT 😁
@K9K-trax loved the intro too by the way haha
