Thank you Rev. Matsumoto, excellent exposition. Much appreciated for your sharing on UA-cam! Please 🙏 keep posting. Nami Amida Butsu
Incredibly insightful, beautifully presented and articulated. I thank you deeply from my heart. Namo Amitabha Buddha
Is there a way to contact Rev Paraskovopoulus ? thank you
Beautiful presentations from all three speakers, and some very moving comments from Rev. Jerry Hirano. Namo Amida Butsu, Namo Amida Butsu🙏
Super interesting!!
Thank you for your presentation Sensei.
Very interesting session, thank you.
Fascinating presentation! Namo Amida Butsu🙏
A wonderful and important talk! It reminds me of a recent, excellent, essay in the Jodo Shinshu International Journal - "My Dualistic Faith". Namo Amida Butsu🙏
5:30 lecture begins.
Alcoholism is not a desease ,it’s a habit fuelled by lack of acceptance of self , like all other human deficiencies -its an illicit drug like heroin , it’s the only illicit drug that you have to explain to people why you don’t partake in it ,It’s not in DNA, it’s a government backed social poison that has been around too long , weaved into western people in particular and should be totally banned ., bhuddist teachings Would deplore this nonsensical past time , It enables people to temporarily blanket mistruths within their psyche and cleverly helps them play the victim , it morphs to exasperate any weakness within ( like any addiction ) The minute the victim totally digests and accepts this they become no longer addicted , I know this because I was a victim for many years , interesting video ,thanks 🎉
Without orthodoxy there is no stability, only sentimentality. Sentimentality degrades the Teaching to Suggestion, and community becomes unable to sustain the clarity of truth. Without the truth the community loses its reason for being, and emotionalism and relativism come to dominate. When the community is dominated by relativism, its relativity is standardized by popular opinions and social fads. It's great to see a wise and experienced minister speak to the issue that enables Shin Buddhism to continue with integrity, conveying its timeless, transcendental truths.
Thank you for addressing this issue. As a non-native English speaker, I found it somewhat challenging to follow the highly sophisticated description, but it was definitely worth watching. Having grown up learning the teaching in a traditional manner, I’ve never found the story of Bodhisattva Dharmakara outdated or obsolete. It is a significant way of communicating what the inconceivable Dharma-body is like, to us, who are not made to grasp the supra-conceptual existence. In the same aspect, I love the Gobunsho letter, Osode-no-sho (Holding on the Amida’s Sleeves), in which Rennyo encourages us to “single-mindedly entrust ourselves to the Buddha for our emancipation in the afterlife, as if holding fast to Amida’s sleeves.”
Thank you Rev Takashi Miyaji & Rev John Paraskovopoulus for expressing the joys of our Shinshu tradition. For the love of our tradition to be filled with the Joys of the Teachings of Shinran Shonin and NAMO AMIDA BUTSU. Such a pleasure to hear "orthodoxy" for a change, to those who entrust who are filled with the compassion of our tradition, please share this Joy. Gasshou

This was quite the inteeesting talk. I enjoyed it
WOW Fantastic ❤
Excellent!!!
Excellent lecture! Gassho.
Thank you for addressing this topic. I like it. It's courageous to speak clearly about the risk of mxing up mundane and supramundane teachings.
Imperative and timely. Namu Amida Butsu
Its a bit polemic we talk about orthodoxy using D.T Suzuki and Perenialism as our references
I didnt register in time to see this live, but I really wanted to see it, thank you for uploading!
Wonderful talk, I loved the part about Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva! Namo Amida Butsu🙏
An excellent, necessary and timely talk from a wonderful priest. It is imperative that we maintain right view. Namo Amida Butsu🙏
The mundane isn't what we think it is.
What a beautiful talk! Thank you Matsumoto Sensei! This resonated deeply with me. Namo Amida Butsu🙏

南無阿彌陀佛
so very beautiful, thank you
can you tell me who was the minister who gave a talk on March 28th, 2024 called : " Power of Being Present >" ...it was on UA-cam, and why was his name not showing ? His talk touched me deeply . Namo Amida Butsu
I'm almost giving up ..the teachings are beautiful but I'm not Japanese...I wish the chants would be at least 50 Japanese and 50 local language....
Sutra chanting is also a practice. You don't have to understand the meaning of each character as you chant. But you can focus on the sounds of each character, and focus on your tone and breathing as you chant alone, or chant with others. As you become more familiar with the sounds of the characters through practice, you will start to gain an appreciation of the act of sutra chanting. And despite not understanding the words in the moment, if you ever have the chance to attend a Jodo Shinshu service in person, you will hear the familiar sounds of the sutras you have practiced, and you realize in that moment that you are one with a larger community. And if you ever have to change to travel to Japan and visit a temple... you will find the same familiar sounds and feel at home even when you are a world away. I hope this helps.
My grandmother was Japanese but did t pass down the language or much of the traditions. For me this is discovery of tradition and a faith that makes sense to me. I think of this loke the Latin mass. I attended catholic high school and have a deep appreciation for that church and the Latin mass; though it doesn't speak to me in the buddhism does. So I consider Japanese and Pali and Sanskrit as analogs to Latin in that way. A language of the sprit. Though I'll admit I also like Latin and Japanese as languages ontheir own 😂
The teacher "cajoling and bullying" into recieving Shinjin is absolutely still a phenomenon. I've experienced it personally! Anyway, a wonderful talk on the most important of issues! Namo Amida Butsu🙏
Another wonderful and important set of talks! Namo Amida Butsu🙏
Despite the PP slides really being a horrible text desert, often even with more text than Dr. Amstutz cared to talk about, and despite the talk being too long, in other words, despite the whole thing being a catastrophe didactically--I found it really interesting. I am interested in Shin Buddhism and know little about its history in Japan. so the issue is fascinating and I learned a lot. The issue how the Shin Buddhist organisations and indeed many followers supported Japanese nationalism and militarism in the first half of the 20th century is important and deserves to be looked at in depth, even by devoted Shin Buddhists. It reminds me of the discussions and soul searching of Christian churches in Germany after WWII about their rather inglorious role during the Nazi dictatorship. I am convinced that this does not question the value and the positive aspects of the faith in Amida Buddha and tariki, but it is kind of a shadow that must be addressed and not be swept under the carpet, in order to find a way forward. I also find it interesting how Shin Buddhism is developing in the USA, and I wish it would be more known and widespread in Europe. Namu Amida Butsu.
This was fascinating, and much deeper than I expected! I'm particularly fascinated by Rev. Yamaoka's work with addiction through a Shin lens and a Shin twelve step program! Namo Amida Butsu🙏
Great talk. My understanding no superstition doesn't mean denying the existence of ghosts, the same way not praying to Shinto kami doesn't mean denying the existence of kami.
Very good talk. If I may, I'd just like to add that there is a risk with naikan that, when its placed in a Shin context, it can be treated as a 'tool' for attaining Shinjin, which is self power and therefore unhelpful. Ofcourse, nothing wrong with naikan for improving our lives. Namo Amida Butsu🙏
Wonderful talk! Namo Amida Butsu🙏
What a wonderful lecture! I wish there was more like this on youtube, especially stuff that dissects the differences between the Nishi and Higashi Honganji. Namo Amida Butsu🙏
I am grateful for this fire presentation. Thank you! NAMO BUDDHĀYA!
Thank you for the excellent lecture. Gasshō
I'm sorry I came across this only now. I like the teaching especially towards the end. I now have a deep respect for Master Shinran's teachings. Very deep very deep indeed.
Thanks for this Part two. I understand how you discussing how to improve quality of your younger genaration.
Informative presentation. Namu Amida Butsu 🙏🏻
this was great! Thank you!
I was looking for a different (more recent) talk by Dr. Mitchell and just stumbled across this on my drive today. It is one of the most amazing talks on Shin Buddhism I've ever heard. I can't really put it into words except to say that I don't think I've ever heard a more cogent argument for the relevance, value, and uniqueness of Shin Buddhism for modern western (maybe better to say global) society. So much is right on here. The world would be a better place if it had millions of more views. Thank you CBE for facilitating and recording this, and Dr. Mitchell for your passionate exposition. I think this is really important.

Thank you Rev. Dr. Matsumoto! This session was a fantastic look at Shinjin, and I can’t wait to watch Part 2!
