Kings Lynn Woodbridge Norwich Yarmouth and Soham Steelyards
Kings Lynn - Norwich - Soham -Yarmouth -Woodbridge - Steelyards.
Soham in Cambridgeshire and Woodbridge in Suffolk have the only Steelyard weighing machines left in this country still in their original position, parts of one at Kings Lynn, Norfolk also remain. This interesting story will tell of five known to exist.
They were used to weigh vehicles, mainly carts. The weight of the load determined the cost- collecting fees for the upgrading of roads called a Turnpike or a Wayleave. The driver of a vehicle would stop at a Tollbooth and pay a fee required to pass along a section.
All the Steelyards in this film were attached to Public
The Fountain Inn - Soham. The Blue Lion - Kings Lynn, Norfolk. The Old Bell and Steelyard -Woodbridge, Suffolk. The Kings Arms - Yarmouth, also The Magpie Inn - Norwich, all in the south east of England.
