I'm partial to the Series iii, but the Custom EX is a great horn. I had the benefit of playing these two side by side for weeks while I was in school. Yamaha did an excellent job with their horn's intonation and response, but I felt I had no flexibility with the pitch and there was something about the core tone I didn't like in the high register. I bought a Series iii and swapped the neck which improved the low end response, which was my only complaint. I don't like Yamaha's gold lacquer either. My Selmer has a brushed finish with a clear lacquer on it.
