Hey there!
By accident I've been on a sea kayaking trip a few years ago, and it immediately clicked!
Since then I spend as much time as I can on the waters, trying to improve my kayaking skills and enjoying the outdoors.
In terms of photography, I come from analogue portraiture photography with a Hasselblad 500c.
But soon I discovered the outdoor photography and later videography.
Happily these two passions complement each other perfectly! So I’m working on my Sea Kayaking, but also building up my creative portfolio. If you need a Videographer / Photographer on one of your expeditions, drop me a line :)
Here I want to share my experiences, hopefully infect you with my passion for this wonderful sport and make you get out there!
Never stop trying to find those little and big adventures, stay curious and wild!
Cheers! Tom

East Greenland - A Seakayak Expedition with Martin Rickard
Переглядів 30 тис.2 роки тому
East Greenland is probably the one destination to be travelled by sea kayak. It is the home of the kayak, but also home of immensely huge icebergs, polar bears, whales, other tremendous wildlife and incredibly kind people. I had the opportunity to travel to East Greenland with an amazing group of passionate paddlers, guided by Martin Rickard and George Shaw. Martin has roughly 20 years of exper...

The White Kayak - Expedition Teaser - Following the British Arctic Air Route Expedition In the 1930s, Gino Watkins and his team undertook a series of expeditions in East Greenland, to survey the weather and possible landing sites for establishing an air route from Europe to North America. The risks were multifold. From kayaking in ice choked waters, to snow storms and polar bears, they were on ...
My dear Fear - A cinematic love letter (climbing, kayaking, hiking) - Shot on Sony FX3
Переглядів 2,8 тис.3 роки тому
Probably everyone being active in the outdoors has certain experiences with this one feeling... Fear. Sometimes you don't even recognise it is present. Sometimes it dominates everything and you cannot feel anything else. No matter if sea kayaking in the surf, climbing a big wall of rock, or hiking alone in the woods. Sometimes it gives you that rush of adrenalin that pushes you towards your lim...
Bones - A Documentary about friendship, loss & a new beginning
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
This film is very different compared to the films I’ve done so far. And it's probably the most personal of all. It is a story not only about my longest friend of 17 years Wolfgang and „Bones“, the Maremma-Abruzzese herd protector dog, we raised together for over 12 years. It is a story about the very special connection between a man and his dog. And unfortunately about letting her go, dealing w...

Thanks for sharing. I feel the same way, no place on earth gives me more peace than sitting in a kayak. It’s magic!
Thank you :) really glad you liked it!
Wonderful as always, Tom! 👏
Thank you so much 😀
Great video guys. A touching story. Looking forward to seeing Jeff next month ❤
Thank you so much for your feedback :) Where are you going to see Jeff?
@@TomVetterl He is leading a ISKG course in Dunbar at start of next month. I cant make the course but I will do some photography with them.
Nice, sounds awesome nonetheless…!
what a cool tour! like a dream. I want to do that too
Thanks mate! Then Martin Rickard is your man :)
Not So fun fact. Martin ricard used to work as a ASN teacher at a school. He left in late 2023. He Bullied an autistic boy into running away from the school 4 times. I hope this spreads awareness about ayy holes like this.
Wow ! That is extreme kayaking, what an amazing adventure. I wonder how you cope with the climate and cold ? truly dedicated to the sport. Thanks for sharing an amazing experience.
Thank you Phil, glad you liked it! Actually it wasn’t too bad. On the water we had our drysuits over fleece/merino layers, on Camp also just merino layers and a rain jacket to block wind. A warm sleeping bag :) And lots of tea and coffee :)
Impressive achievements! But amature or reckless adventures are the worst! Never sail under or into an iceberg NEVER! It is unforgivable and it can crack on you without warning! Keep safe distance!
Glad you liked our edit!
bro sooo good! Came from the critique video and absolutely love what you've done!
Hey thanks mate! Glad you like it!
Can’t wait to see more! How fascinating - both the subject and the leader of the expedition.
Thank you!
I tell people to be sure to have a life while they're alive. You succeeded.
Thanks mate!
Thank you YT Algorithm for placing this on the top of my feed - a fine video, indeed. And it is is interesting the rare perspective we enjoy when we dare to press hard into the wind. Sadly, most people will never step out to the edge of their comfort zones. I have a similar story and it was mountaineering that did it for me. Now, at 64, I reflect and write about these escapades... grateful that I am still alive. As is written on the cover of one of my journals, "Life begins at the end of one's comfort zone." Cheers.
Hey thanks mate, glad the algorithm washed us into your feed :)
Thank you, I would be interested in your books, can you share a title you’d most recommend
Amazing video and such a vital, necessary story. What a gift!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Beautiful work
Thank you!

Thank you Matt! Glad you liked it!
Nice one ! . Nothing like kayaking to bring on the chill vibes
Absolutely :) thanks mate!
Cornwall is not a bad place to be, the water is cold but there is no doubting you will feel better after. Good luck.
Thanks mate
Deeply inspiring. This film and your words resonated strongly inside. I discovered kayaking a year ago during a holiday visit to my nephew living in the Netherlands. Never really been in a kayak before until 53 yrs of age, but somehow it sparked into a passion and a desire to learn and be on the water as often as possible. Especially paddling through the winter, when nature seemed to sleep and rest and hardly anyone else was boating had me feel a deep spiritual connection with life and Mother. Thanx for sharing your story. Greetings from an East German NAVY vet. 👊
Hey! Danke dir für dein Feedback, freut mich sehr, dass der dir Film gefallen hat 🤗
Great video guys!!! I too share the same passion for the ocean and kayak offshore. Seeing the shots of you playing in the waves gave me goosebumps nice work keep living the dream 🤙
Hey thank you so much, glad you liked it :)
Fascinating and beautiful - the film and the humans. Thank you X
Thanks mate!
I have a similar experience with the ocean. I love being in the water. It's such a beautiful, calm place of solitude.
Thanks mate!
At 64 I hit the wall. Abuse for years as a young boy, broken family, "stiff upper lip" upbringing. Years of being a lone wolf personality, watching an assassination right next to me, held at gunpoint 3 x , and so much more. The sea will be my savior soon. I understand the healing of the sea.
Thanks for sharing your story with us 🙏🏻
Nike. Just do it . . .
Absolutely
Y’all are seasoned Vets in the Sailing world and do an absolutely magnificent job at make wonderful videos. Enjoy every minute of u and the boy’s!
Thank you!
Dear Tom and Jeff, thank you so much for sharing this film with us all. I for one Jeff have been deeply touched by your story. i'm just 34 years old, recently moved back in with my parents after splitting up with my partner and suffer from depression and PTSD from my 2 deployments out in afghan when I was serving in the military for 11 years. i'm lost, empty and directionless, and there has been alot of things that resonated with me through this short film, and I have to admit, made me cry on a few occasions as it reminded me of my own story in a sense. i'm a big traveller, been around the world a few times with just my backback and experienced many cultures and beautiful people. I used to live on a boat myself in the uk, on the inland waterways. anyway all this to say, i'm getting myself the help I need now and getting myself back on my feet slowly but surly. thank you for sharing your story. i've just finished watching it 3 times in a row. much love to you Jeff and all the best. Josh
Hey Josh, thank you so much for your feedback! I showed your comment to Jeff, he wrote the following and asked me to post it here for you (see below). Hope you’re feeling better soon! Tom „Hey Josh, thank you for your kind comments regarding the film and for your humility and your honesty. I’m really happy that you’re finding support, it took me years before I recognised that I had stuff to deal with. Trauma affects everyone at sometime or other, it will be a lot more prevalent in the services and I know many more ex servicemen who have suffered in one way or another, so we certainly aren’t alone. I’ve lost quite a few friends and colleagues to depression and one of our aims for the film was to try and remove the barriers that many men, especially former servicemen have in being able to talk about these issues openly. If you ever needed someone to chat to, I’m always happy to talk and you could find my number through my website or social media pages. Jeff“
Josh I found your comment and wanted to say 👋. I hear you, I care and I say this because I've been in a hard spot many times over 50 years. Multiple incidents of trauma, ongoing interpersonal issues and anger, with a side of CPTSD. I wish you peace, find hope and joy in living. My go too now is bike packing and camping..at 65yrs. Exercise, in any form, sunshine and writing has always given me release from the load I carry. Be well, M
Thank you Jeff and thank you Tom for this beautiful and moving film.
Thanks for watching!
Simply outstanding! Insightful and poignant.
Thanks mate!
Beautiful cinematography, pacing and storytelling. A true piece of Art Tom. I am full with motivation and hope after watching this - and whenever a film is moving somebody, it worked, right? I am interested in your gear. On the Interview with jeff you are using something anamorphic or even a helios right? How did you coach him to stay in focus? And in the water you where using spherical lenses I think. What camera and housing did you use on these shots? Did you just put down autofocus sensitivity and speed to 1 or did you actually rock manual focus while beeing in freezing cold water? Congratulations once again. Just beautiful. Oh and cheers from a Swiss AOD friend
Hey there! Thank you so much! Glad you liked it! I used the Sony FX3 and mostly the Sony 24-70 GM. In the water I used my FX3 in a Salty Surf Housing, combined with an external battery and also the 24-70. For 90% of the water shots in autofocus, with adjusted sensitivity and speed. That was simply try and error, to find settings that worked for me. The focal lenghts was variable, so I could zoom in and out whilst swimming. For the under water flare shots in the beginning I used manual focus and just kept it constant whilst moving the camera. For the Interview I'll have to look up which lens it was, but either the Sony 24-70 or a fixed focal length like the Sony 35 mm, shot with open aperture and manual focus, I asked Jeff to not move too much, which worked quite well. I got a few questions if I have used an anamorphic lens, but actually I just added some blur and directional blur in post. Please don't tell anyone :D
Wow, incredible Tom! I'm kinda speechless.
Thank you Björn, glad you liked it!
Loved this story
Cool, thanks mate!
Beautiful story and well shot. Thanks for sharing

Hey Greg, thank you so much, I'm really glad you like it!
Beautiful. How very inspiring & offers moment of reflection.
Thank you :)
Kayaking helped me with all the trauma since early childhood, I am 51 now, and animals and my kayak is my refuge. I wouldn't alive anymore if I didn't have this ❤
Thanks for the feedback mate! Glad you're doing ok!
@@TomVetterl this means the world to me, to see that I am not the only one struggling and getting joy out of the simple but significant things in life. Tha is for sharing your story and your rockpool!
@@Hellhamster No you're definitely not alone with this... I personally have very similar struggles in my life, which is why I was so drawn to Jeffs story. I think everyone has these kind of challenges to a certain degree!
Just outstanding in all aspects. The most beautifully put together deep storytelling in under 15 minutes. Big respect to both Jeff and Tom.
Thanks mate!
I lived 3 doors up from Geoff for years in Bissom in Penryn, good to see him doing well :-) I've not seen him for years, this is one of the best things I've watched for years :-) .
Thanks mate!
Great film, loved it maybe more to come hopefully. I have met Jeff a couple of time through his brother, a gent of a guy.
Thanks Christopher! Yes, there is always something in the pipeline :)
