Green Roots on the Meadow
In September 2024, Multistory presented Green Roots on the Meadow, a free community event to celebrate the flourishing meadow we planted in September 2023. Comprising performances and creative activities, the event took place on the meadow behind Primark in New Square shopping centre (West Bromwich).
Green Roots is Multistory’s urban greening cultural programme that we have been running across Sandwell for the past three years. It invites Sandwell communities to co-produce and engage in conversations and activities around climate and social justice through art-making and workshops.
Green Roots on the Meadow celebrated environmental sustainability and all the wonderful communities who have worked with us on the programme. The event featured a first cutting of the meadow in collaboration with the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust, where attendees were invited to take part in the cutting and in the planting of wildflower seeds.
There was also a live musical rendition of the map 'Sounding the West Bromwich Way' (a collaborative project with members of Sandwell Visually Impaired and sound artist Lorenzo Prati) performed by poet Lee Mackenzie and local musicians on the day.
Midlands-based physical theatre group, Open Theatre, showcased a family-friendly inclusive theatre performance, Wandering Wild, using the meadow to explore themes around nature and wilderness.
We were also joined by Ruby Lewis and Zoey Sibanda who provided some fun creative art and planting activities.

There's nothing like a herbal tablet on a cold winter's morning!
I used to live in Wednesbury 1940s and 50s. Werked at thowd park a Lloyds it was a Bostin plerce. I now live on the Mediterranean but the old place still brings early memories
I just bought some Gray’s Herbal Tablets and by coincidence up popped this documentary. I’m just hoping that the company is still being run along similar lines. It would be wonderful to think that this wonderful business continues to flourish. My favourites have always been toffee bonbons. Love their shop and goodies. Hope they go on forever.
I used to live by the van driver they interviewed. He used the van to go home in. Whenever you walked passed it it always smelled of herbal tablets from 10ft away!
I think the fact that there's only one comment for this video shows what the people of Wednesbury think of this nonsense. What we need in Wednesbury is for the woke council and planners to ignore the government and the agenda 21 plans. What we really need is for the powers that be to not spend 3 million pounds on massive new paving projects where they're not needed, or new market stalls where they're not needed or making the two way high street into a one way street that stops traffic entering the town to reach the shops they need. We need more incentives for businesses and traders to come to Wednesbury to give the local people more choice and good service. Art is fine if it's free or cheap.
You can't beat old-fashioned sweets. Sweets to all the sweeties at Teddy Gray's.
Brilliant, well done all involved 👍
Your work is inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
I can buy pear drops when I attend Leighton hospital, but rarely. I’d buy more if I could. Wish I could buy from supermarkets
I live in Tipton and frequent good ol' Wednesbury
2:18 where can i get a calendar?
Music is annoying as hell !!!
Absolutely, I agree with you. Too much noise in this world. If somebody has something to say, that is enough! And this artist has a lot to say. Very inspiring!
This was fascinating!
This was a fantastic watch. What an amazing story, and indeed factory!
Liked it! Cheers from Australia!
Don't know anyone who doesn't like them,I'm eating a pack of herbals right now,you got to keep buying these ,don't let another uk company close down, they need our support, maybe our kids will be able to enjoy them when their older too.
Use to live nxt to brendon good chap haven't met Ian bott but know the family n his brothers enjoyed watching this brings bk memories of wednesbury
Wow she’s a human calculator 😮 the way she can handle all the numbers just in her head! That’s incredible, a true asset to any company, can’t believe how long ago this was filmed tho, I hope it’s still the same old same old, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
Lovely to see you Susan perform your poetry.👍
The rock don’t taste very nice sorry guys just didn’t enjoy them
Herbal tablets are good and the pips sweets are grate on flavour
And yow cor get na sweet like Teddy grays does them
Best sweets ever
This is the most famous company in the Black Country but not only that it developed its own famous black county suck and this business is a family owned business not owed by council at all also its sweets date back to Victorian years
lovey to see you Ian x
Incredible. I'm inspired.
Amazing 👏 Wonderful to see physically interactive poetry rather than virtually. I want to know if this happens again so I can come and take part in events?
Thanks Parm. You can sign up to the Multistory newsletter on our website to hear about upcoming We Are Wednesbury activities - lots more to come!

Happiest place in my life into Teddy Grays 1961 after being at the cubs.
Well done Martin, and thanks to all who featured, so much to enjoy.
When will teddy Grays Dudley be opened up again it was sad to see closed all through this stupid virus
Just ordered some Grey's herbal sweets.
I love how your meticulous cutting out.
Hi great work . How do you glue? Do,you create a composition and then trace the best you can before gluing to know where the pieces were ? This is my challenge. Technically.. thank you .
Hi! I photograph the composition then refer to that at the sticking stage. Depending on the piece I sometime use tiny pencil marks for positioning.
Wow! It's so beautiful and amazing. Greetings from Brazil. 🇧🇷😍👏
