Also, it would have been nice to quote what Wallace said in his diary that the discovery of the Birdwing butterfly, which he described is the most beautiful butterfly in the world. He related how it created such excitement as only experienced previously when in immediate apprehension of death, and stated that his heart was pounding so much he had a headache and had to retire to lie down for the rest of the day
Ymir☠️
Wallace is a great hero of mine. I vividly remember seeing this when it was first broadcast. Superb production in every sense.
I was shot at on New Year's Eve, somebody unloaded a full clip and I was chill. I'm just screeching right now like a child lol I'm not feeling this😅 I'm constantly in lakes and rivers and this is the thing of the nightmare
Thanks you Mr for video Please upload more video in ternate
Fascinating! Are they hunting fish, or preferring terrestrial prey?
The guy can't believe it's swimming lol
Hopefully Thylacine will be filmed like this again
This. Is. Awesome
I admire Alfred Wallace far more than Charles Darwin. He never knew it, but Wallace had seen plate tectonics in action. Darwin was a man of 'private means' whilst Wallace had to slog through swamps and jungles to make ends meet. There is no doubt that Darwin wanted the credit for 'natural selection' and dropped Wallace's name from all but the first edition of his book. To be honest, I would say that Wallace was the better man.
Alfred Russel Wallace shares credit with Charles Darwin for developing the theory of evolution by natural selection. Yet one part of Wallace's life and career has been completely ignored. Wallace went on to later believe in intelligent Evolution, and his conversion to intelligent design was grounded in science, and not religion. He was not a creationist, he was not a Christian, and he was politically a socialist. It just goes to show that Intelligent design is not something that can be pigeonholed.
Hard to see the BBC making a programme this good today.
Absolutely - these days their programmes have to appeal to the unwashed masses!

Thank you very much for your efforts to bring Wallace works and ideas to the public. I can be part of it when time allows.

AI today like ChatGPT can't be fully trusted but I think it can speed up the estimated 14 years of work a lot! (Especially since AI is progressing exponentially.) Regarding evolution it's interesting that epigenetics is more like Lamarckism than Darwinism.
Yes, potentially AI will speed up some of the work - especially writing summaries of the letters (though we have tested this with ChatGTP4 and the results are not perfect, so a human would still need to read the letter and correct the summary). The most time-consuming aspects are, however, beyond the ability of current AI systems: 1) meticulously checking the transcripts against the images of the letters. I have spoken to OCR experts and OCR will not be able to help with at least half the letters (letters to Wallace) because these were written by more than 1500 people, and you would need to train the AI OCR system on the handwriting of each person for it to work well, which is not possible; 2) AI cannot decide what endnotes are needed, only human experts can, though AI will help with the research for the endnotes. Yes epigenetics is sort of Lamarckian, but it is only relatively short term in its effects and is certainly not at all what Darwin and Lamarck were envisioning.
I could listen to you George for ever talking about the great Alfred Russell Wallace, thanks for the great informative video, keep them coming please 😊
Thanks very much Raymond for the encouragement!
Six year of service and Alli only recieved 2 rifles as payment... the thing is not that slavery and serfdom use to occur but that the filmaker decided to put it in the movie...
Before you start to criticise you should at least understand the facts. Ali was a Wallace's employee and was free to leave whenever he liked if he thought the pay and conditions weren't good. In Singapore at the end of the trip Wallace gave him "...besides a present in money, I gave him my two double-barrelled guns and whatever ammunition I had, with a lot of surplus stores, tools, and sundries, which made him quite rich." I worked in an organisation for 20 long years and when I left got nothing. Ali was very fortunate.
Do we know anything about Ali’s subsequent life, or what happened to the guns? Are they in the collection somewhere?
Amazing! And the soundtrack is also superb!

What a delight it was to watch it as I as an evolution enthusiast and a mathematician by profession celebrate Wallace 200.

Thanks so much for another epic on the great Alfred Russell Wallace, so enjoyed these, thanks for all your hard work 👍
Thanks very much indeed. I have been studying Wallace's life and work for 25 years now, and the more I learn, the more impressed I am. Also, the more I understand about Wallace's work and its impact, the more I realise that the history books need to be rewritten. Currently it's all about Darwin.
@@blaberus1 Well I also follow you too George and have met you at the museum when I was a member and have always admired you're enthusiasm for Wallace and really do hope soon he gets the credit he so deserves, your wife also has a great enthusiasm for arachnids, thanks again George 👍
Hu what if a fully aquatic species evolves will it have paddel like limbs
There is a cryptid called the Con Rit that is literally a aquatic centipede
Oh, neat--I had no idea you had a background in the history of evolution. I am a terminal-masters-type--but I studied with Will Provine and then Mark Adams, Rob Kohler, and Charles Rosenberg, etc. I was most interested in the Goldschmidt-Gould connection, hoo-hah, and all that. Gould is actually how I got into all that: by a Gouldian contingency, he and my dad grew up together, so from age 8, my dinosaur fascination started morphing into history of evolution, etc. I'm 53 now and am still plugging away at history of science, in the consumption sense! Reading Morange on the history of molecular bio. Great channel!
What a fine dramatization: tasteful, accurate--even situated in the actual places themselves! Very well done. Was not surprised this was the same crew as those who did the Mendel dramatization--also on UA-cam: The Garden of Inheritance. I must say, the lead actors this guy got were spitting images of the personages.
I totally agree. I will have to watch the Mendel film, which I didn't know about.

The 30 yr pension darwin paid to A R WALLACE... 1882 onwards.. Ending in 1913...that shows how much darwin rated A R WALLACE..
Incredible. Alfred Wallace is one of the most important naturalist's for everywhere.
The original broadcast appears to have been on Christmas Eve 1982 on BBC2.
@19:00 Darwin did not discover natural selection in 1838, if you think he did please share why you think he did (note you just said it happened, that’s all). Saying “the stronger ones survive and contribute to the next generation, and this is how transmutation works over many generations” is not natural selection. Natural selection primarily is the invocation of random variation in offspring, and if you have proof that Darwin was onto this in 1838 please share it rather than just tell us that you know. Random variation + (the obvious) differential reproductive-success, and general inheritance, turns out different species over time.
I mean, imagine if at @20:20 you didn’t have that red blob on Darwin’s timelines way before Wallace’s red blob, then it would be too sus to say Darwin came up with it at all… that red blob of Darwin’s means nothing, it was not the work of genius, Wallace’s actually was and fully encompasses the theorem. Darwin’s musings and writings were in line with the natural selection theory (the stronger ones contribute to the future genes) but doesn’t at all imply a non-haphazard steering mechanism, which is what Wallace created (the crane of thought).
What extraordinarily men both Darwin and Wallace were. Kind and gentle in respect towards each other with no envy or deceit in their pursuit and expression of the greatest discovery that has ever come to human consciousness. They are a credit to their species and history will remember them both as long as sentient life form exists. They were was it is to be truly noble in the most human of ways.
I’m reading countless books from Columbus, Darwin, FitzRoy, McCarthy and others. One day I’m ll get to Wallace. Wallace is in the league of John Harrison. I believe the H2 clock was on the Beagle’s voyage with Darwin and not the voyage before Darwin. Thanks
Where did you get it?
Looks like torture. Too small of a tank for it. Poor thing

There’s a similar centipede that moves it’s body like a snake to swim, it’s really cool.
There's never a spring at the summit. And millipedes don't sting, centipedes do.
Yes, I've spotted a few errors, but not any really serious ones.
