EP.9 - Buying an Elite DIRETO XR-T smart trainer and doing my first FTP test
Howdy fellow human beings!
Alright, here we go. I finally got my hands on a DIRETO XR-T smart trainer, and it’s time to do my first FTP test.
Spoiler: it’s going to be bad. Really bad.
Let’s set the scene here: I’ve been sick, eating way too much, and haven’t trained for almost two months. This is basically the perfect recipe for the worst FTP test results of my life.
But hey, you’ve got to start somewhere, right?
I’ve also been hitting the gym lately-trying to build up some power for the bike-so this test is more like a baseline for the comeback. No expectations, no pressure, just a casual ride into the abyss of low watts.
Stick around if you’re into watching someone barely survive an FTP test and somehow stay optimistic about it.
Let’s gooooooo!

Howdy fellow human beings! This is a fun one (for me at least). When Johan and I were starting Onirique, he was closing a project for which he hired me as a gaffer. How do you control the Camera while shooting? This rig is super heavy so what do you do to be able to control the camera? How do you pull focus while shooting??
Hit the gym 3 times a week and sneak a yoga session in there once in a while. As far as focus goes, you either keep the subject in the plane of focus and move with it, use a focus motor that you can control with your thumbs or have someone remotely pull focus.

NASTY COMMENT: I love using a Gimbal! 😁 Maybe I just am weak and shaky but I use a Zhy... and the basic (non-digital in camera) stabilization to shoot weddings. I've done a couple without it and regretted it. (Even though I've received no complaints.) I want the crutch so I can concentrate on other things! There are so many THINGS at a wedding. 😅
I love it when people watch to the end! No, you are not weak haha, gimbals are a tool and we are all free to use the tools we want and need. Thanks for watching mate and keep being awesome!

Number 1 fan here. So next episode next week? And can you add number so people can see it in chronological order, like a doc series?
I'll do my best to release one every week! And it's an excellent idea to number the videos!
Attention ! c'est top secret!
Top secret défense!
Nice! amazing to see it was one year ago! It seems yesterday and in the same time 10 years ago!!! hahahahha!
So many things happened in so little time!
Where can I get the zhiyun battery pack from?
Probably Amazon
nice video, looks quality. I own a 28, 50 and 135mm Takumar lenses but can't get them in focus. I have an Ursa12k with PL mount, to use vintage lenses I bought an M42 to PL adapter ring. The Helios, for example, work perfectly, but the Takumar lenses don't, because I can only screw the adapter on upside down as the lens mount is too short. How did you manage it?
My URSA has an EF mount. That might be why
Dirty nasty ginger….but cool 😂
Great Video
very thanks
You're welcome 🤗
Love it
Thanks mate!
After a few days use you know nothing about this camera. Try 6 months of daily use. It's a tool for specific needs and no an apsc sensor does not create the lens compression a larger sensor does. They look different, and as real pros have commented on this video there are useful things for their type of work like large crops/prints etc. You actually are making shallow and unsubstantiated criticisms without sufficient understanding. All cameras have faults and compromises. This is a niche and specialized camera and not something that does all the work for lazy minded people.
Also I am not some gfx fan either. They have many problems and are far from perfect, however for me they can all be worked around for what I need and want. I heavily criticize Fuji for their errors. But for what I need there is no substitute.
It's crazy how y'all say shit like "lazy minded people" yet aren't even able to grasp the part where I say "For what I do". I know what a medium format is, I worked with them a lot when I was working as a photographer. The studio I worked at had a Hasselblad and it was our workhorse. But now that I work as a Cinematographer, I have no need for a medium format. Simple as that
always never give up

Have you still been doing any of the video outreach Julien?
Yes. I am currently finishing some projects that came from the first batch of outreach. I filmed and edited another batch last week and I will be putting the finishing touches and sending the emails sometimes early next week! I will be making a video about the results of these videos later this year
Nasty. I posted nasty in the comments as you directed.

SO GOOD! New Subsciber

Thank you for this perspective.

Hi I had to respond to your review on the Fuji gfx 100s and I don’t mean to be rude. But I don’t understand with all of the reviews on the Fuji GFX MF that content creators reviews by just having it or renting it for a few weeks is you guys always compare the Fuji GFX with another camera that not a medium format. That’s like flying on a luxury airline that has more room and fly slow and you guys right away compare it to a Concord that flys much much faster..It’s like buying a car like Mercedes SUV and compare it to a Mercedes sport car. Before I buy something I know right away what to expect.. obviously any full frame fourth third camera is going to be faster in focus, etc. etc. Also MF was never designed for video. If going to do any comparison why not compared to a Hasselblad or phase 1 that would be more practical. And I’m sure one would see why Fuji gfx is way ahead of those two overly expensive MF.
I only reviewed it because Fuji lent it to me and asked me my opinion and I thought I might as well make a UA-cam video about it. Comparing an SUV to a Sports Car is still valid since they both serve a different purpose and making these comparisons helps people who might be wondering if it's the right camera for them. In the end, I've been a professional photographer for almost 15 years now (I transitioned to video about 6 years ago) and I've been using almost every camera under the sun so I have a decent understanding of what a camera is and in what case it would be great. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around WHY people get so triggered by me saying that this is a marvelous camera that's just not made for me
This is great advice. Brilliant
Thanks mate! I am happy that my knowledge can serve you!
This was awesome! Thanks for the strategies, brother man!
I hope this can help you become a thousandaire my bro dog bro
@@julienpierb Fingers and toes crossed. Being a hundredaire is so stressful!
Scalawag does NOT get used enough!!!
It's wildly underrated in the UA-cam space
Nice! Love to see your strategy in action 👻👻
The cheaky ghost hahahaha! 👻 Thanks for the love mate
This is great advice! Especially liked how you went through the process. I’d love to see a video of how you make the video you send. The set up, script writing, editing too 🎉🎉
I'm putting it in the pipeline! Next time I send a salve of emails (next week) I will document it!
Very nice work, did I spot some vintage lenses in there too?
Thanks mate! There is only 1 shot for which I used a vintage lense. The rest is mostly DZO Pictor Zoom, Meike or my personal Sigma 18-35. I usually put a filter in front of the lenses for halation and diffusion.
wow, your demo reel is fucking awesome! thx for sharing xox
Thanks for the compliment mate. It really means a lot to 🥹💕
Also if you are ever in New Brunswick, would love to shoot together! I also have an ursa haha
I'm probably going to visit Nova Scotia quite often since one of my best mate moved there. I'll have to stop by New Brunswick on my way there!
URSA shooters unite! I'm in as well haha )
I agree, no one ever talks about it. But I felt like I had the same thing as you. I started getting into doc filmmaking and found two different types of filmmakers who have been in the industry for years and it really has given me so much insight into this industry. I feel like getting a mentor is a cheat code, it progresses you career so fast!
Definitely! It really helps you achieve your goals wayyyy faster
Thinking about picking up the viewfinder for my ursa, I hate having a monitor as well! haha
I sold mine a while ago and I regret it 🥲
@@julienpierb what did you end up getting?
@@DesmondSimon I ended up getting a Shinobi 7. It's a great monitor, but I really miss the viewfinder for shoulder work
@@julienpierb nice man! Such a struggle with gear eh haha
Nice images man!
Thanks mate! It's appreciated
I ordered this gimbal for my Sony FS5 and wow... its already a very heavy setup, especially on longer shooting days ... and you put this ursa on it whitch is more as twice as heavy then my sony. :D You realy have my respect for handeling this weight! Can you tell how long at a time you can film with this? I think after 15 minutes my body whould be out of order ^^ But ok... i am maybe very untrained and need to go to a gym but hopefully its enough to work with the setup every day :D
It is a heavy setup haha. I don't really use gimbals that much, but when I did, it'd for a couple hours at a time, but I'd film a couple of minutes and put it down in-between takes. It takes a bit of training, but you'll get used to it. I personally do Yoga almost daily and it helps a lot.
Nice wideo! I'll be waiting for the next episode!
Thanks mate! I'll do my best to stay consistent 😅
200th subscriber! :)
Woohoo! Thanks 🙏🏻 I really gotta start posting more than one every 6 months hahaha!
Julien thank you for a very informative video, I want to put my Ursa mini into a gimbal and give it more flexibility and stabilization in a new type of gimbal like crane 3s and now I’m inspired to get the gimbal!! Thank you very much, I’ve liked and subbed. I note you said you only abt 50 subs but now your nearing 200! Well done!!
Hey mate! Thanks a lot fo the kind words, it's appreciated. I hope you got the gimbal and are loving it! Ya! I don't really put any effort on UA-cam and I have almost 200 subs... it blows my mind! Maybe I should put a bit of effort into it hahaha
This camera has a regular bayer sensor, if you thought you saw Fuji colours it was placebo
I don't think you understand what color science is.
Yeah. Still shaking like crazy
?
I think the only person you convinced here is yourself. We shoot weddings 34 years in the game -20-30 year. I shoot with the old GFX100 and Jane shoots with the new GFX100s - the tilty finder is a must for me - but GFX is just so much more - the 110mm is so delicious nothing on earth compares with it - nothing from X series - and I used to use Phase One ans before that Mamiya RZ - saying you can do 90% of the GFX stuff on an XT-4 says sadly more about you than it does the camera - For example - I can shoot a full length bridal portrait - and crop in for a face shot with ZERO loss - ZERO detail - The tilty finder is dream for proper portraits shot at waist level - where they should be - the file resolution alone would be enough to convince anyone - but then there are the lenses - the 30, 45, the 80, and the 110mm are properly rounded primes - 3 of them share the same filter size - then theres the 32-64 zoom lens which Jane has - it is fantastic - nothing from X series gets anywhere near it - you need to try them on location in the heat of a social event to fully understand - I tried the XT-2 for w eek before I went large - it was terrible - an amateur camera at best - and with new lenses on the horizon including a Tilt and Shift - We are am sticking with it - I also tried Hass X Series but far too limiting - lovely colours - but no better than GFX once you have had a fiddle in Lightroom - in fairness if you don't shoot portraits just go with the GFX50s - still utterly ridiculous for cropping - 75%+ is still Ok - chuck one or two in black and white with a selenium tint - and you will sell them all day long - also worthy mention Leica - love the idea of it - but the GFX is a lot more versatile - for us anyway!!! All good though.
I am not trying to convince anyone of anything. I am only giving my opinion about something 🤷♂️. For my use of a photo camera, the XT3 works better. It is light, nimble and takes decent videos (which the GFX doesn't). I work as a filmmaker, I shoot with an URSA Mini Pro G2 as my main camera and a Pocket 6k Pro as my second. I use photography mostly to do BTS, document my everyday life, my travels, my car repairs... I have no need for a medium format. And to say that the XT-2 is an amateur camera speaks of you more than the camera 🤷♂️. In all good thoughts
