I’m so emo, those motifs man, they just give off so much more than you’d here from this one song. To begin with, the stranger in our pictures is referred to, not directly but melody wise. What you would of expected to hear was: “careless and self-centered ways I behaved, stained our home” only...it’s replaced with That City “You say, I’m late! I showed up anyway.” This reflects Don’s past behavior and struggle with drug addiction, one that he’s since then separated himself from, but the stains of his actions still linger in this song (reflected by the melody but not the lyrics) His past still impacts the present, where the one he loves is no longer a part of his life. Relax/Divide is their story, “the place where we met...” *is* from R/D , which is already a song filled with reflection. What this tells us is how toxic the relationship was, especially on his end where he depended his entire being onto this one person, like they were a fix to his drug he’d grow anxious without. So he recognizes now it was better for them to part but he can’t help but reminisce on the good moments they had, and it’s only after time has past did he realize what he lost. And lastly (but may not entirely fit the song) The lyric “we talked in your car” reminded me of the events in Burn Nice and Slow, the music video depicts the two together in a car and after a while everything burns around them but no matter how hard Don’s ex tried to help him, he couldn’t help himself and eventually she left knowing nothing could be salvaged or saved. Though, he mentions in That City that her walls were up, but maybe that’s when she had enough after putting forth so much of her energy to be met with nothing. Idk this is just speculation and for fun but if anyone has any feedback thats totally welcomed!! I’m just a big fucking fan of don’s work and it has inspired so much of my own art, so I get really excited when he releases anything!!
