Keeping this video in mind - I actually started the 1-on-1 with my direct reportees. I had done many times before as part of performance reviews but never actually in 1-on-1 sense. And then went through this video in detail. As said in Outro - just get started! I am also starting this with my manager called as 1-on-1s specifically. So thanks to you all - for bringing up this topic - sharing REAL insights of how it looked / worked. This is one of the mostly underrated topic as per my observation.

What's a small bet for one person might not be for another. Context matters.* 21:20 🚀 *When picking side hustles, limit your resources and spending. Choose problems you personally experience and feel motivated to solve. Community feedback and mindset shifts are crucial.* 23:27 📝 *Identifying problems in your life can lead to valuable side projects. Example: Simplifying the preschool registration process through automation.* 24:33 🔄 *Learn from each project, and don't be afraid to ship sooner. Treat projects as "shots on goal," recognizing that not all will succeed, but each contributes to your learning and experience.* 27:28 💡 *Side hustles can emerge from personal experiences and challenges. Thiago's example: Helping people transition careers and move abroad by sharing experiences and insights.* 28:30 🛑 *Don't get too attached to projects. Don't overthink; just get to a point where you're generating income.* 35:21 🧩 *Consider the false dichotomy of "go big or go home." Start small, make money, and then worry about scaling. Avoid unnecessary stress and focus on practical success.* 38:52 🎤 *Understand your strengths and weaknesses. Not all engineers are introverts, but recognizing your natural inclinations can help shape your approach to side hustles. Side projects can serve as skill-refreshing exercises without the need to start a full-fledged company.* 39:23 🛒 *Consideration of buying a SaaS (Software as a Service) instead of building, emphasizing the decision-making process between building and buying.* 40:28 📚 *Buying an already validated SaaS with existing customers can be advantageous, avoiding the need for experimentation in marketing and sales.* 41:32 💰 *The purpose of a side hustle can vary: it could be for profit, cash flow positivity, or simply for the joy of keeping skills sharp.* 42:33 🚫 *Not all side projects need to be monetized; some can be pursued purely for personal enjoyment or to make a positive impact on others' lives.* 43:37 💡 *Having a plan or a way to monetize is crucial for considering a venture as a side hustle; a side hustle is inherently aimed at making money.* 45:35 🔄 *Embracing a side hustle and small bets approach allows for exploring various interests, solving different problems, and following energy and motivation.* 46:10 📉 *Sharing experiences of failures, including shutting down a startup due to personal priorities and the importance of learning from setbacks.* 54:06 🌐 *Success in side projects may not always come from big, complex endeavors; simple, information-dense products can be valuable and profitable.* 56:38 🌉 *Burning bridges, where going back is not an option, can increase the drive and commitment to make a side hustle successful.* 58:40 ⏰ *Balancing time between a nine-to-five job and side projects, recognizing the challenge of finding dedicated time for side hustle activities.* 59:37 🚀 *Overcoming challenges in maintaining side projects amid busy schedules.* 01:00:12 💼 *Side hustle ideas for engineers: explore freelancing on platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or TopTel. Consider starting a newsletter to share knowledge.* 01:01:18 🌐 *Freelancing or consulting can help discover interests; fractional CTO work for small startups broadens experiences and networking.* 01:02:20 🗣️ *Networking is key to finding freelance opportunities; express interest to friends, business connections, and leverage the current freelance-friendly economy.* 01:03:29 📚 *Engineers should not limit themselves to code-centric activities; exploring diverse interests like writing newsletters or creating content can have unexpected positive outcomes.* 01:06:00 🚫 *Don't delay acting on inspiration; time box your efforts, set success metrics, and embrace diverse goals beyond just monetary success.* 01:07:29 🛠️ *Utilize info product space; consider building projects quickly using existing templates and having your own tech stack for rapid development.* 01:09:28 🚢 *Ship projects even if not perfect; early releases can attract valuable feedback and build anticipation.* 01:11:29 🔄 *Create a skeleton tech stack to rapidly start new projects, avoiding burnout during initial excitement; identify problems in the process as potential ideas for future projects.* Made with HARPA AI

At the final stage of the interview, when my compensation was supposed to be decided. I read an article on how to negotiate salaries, wrote down some points, and when the moment of truth arrived, I got flustered, said my number first, ended up getting less than what I was asking for, and accepted it too. I quit that place within 6 months and got almost triple what I was making there.

Hi all, congratulations for the work, amazing content, very necessary as this is not much spoken and expained in such direct way. I would like to explain you my recent experience. I've changed job 7 months ago, I was hired by a consultancy to work for customer in the UK in the fintech sector. Project looked super interesting, with a tech stack that I wanted to work and progress. To be said, I only have deep experience in a few areas but during the interview they explained me this was not an impediment, they were kind to instruct me in such areas. Nothing further from reality, after 7 months I'm struggling with almost every aspect of the work and with a very high level of frustation. Onboarding was inexistent, just a list of things to do in a self-paced way. No feedback since the begining, no 1:1 for the first 4 months. After that time, I asked specifically to have regular 1:1s. During my first 1:1, I asked my manager to have feedback, he hasn't nothing prepared and tried to improvised a few words. I asked him to prepare feedback from him and my teammates for the next session, he agreed. It's been 2 month a we are going to have another 1:1. I haven't quit yet because now I am very curious to know about this feedback, I've been perfoming very low and struggling a lot. Although all this sounds very bad, the only good thing is that I'm learning a lot (almost by my own), but I don't know how long is going to last this situation because it has been (and it is now) very HARD. Wanted to know your opinions, if anybody has been through at some point. Thanks everyone and specially the speakers in the videos, this content is awesome.
