Polymer Clay Mokume Gane Faux Abalone Tutorial How to Create a Realistic Faux Paua Shell Cabachon
In this demonstration, I show how to get a realistic faux Abalone/Paua shell look using polymer clay. The beginning of the video shows the colors I used for this cabachon and the thicknesses of each after running through my pasta machine. I use an Atlas 150, so my thinnest setting is 7, while my thickest is 0.
All of the colors shown are mixed by hand and are not available in stores. The names I've given them are an approximation of colors most are familiar with. Hopefully, this will aid in choosing or mixing your own colors.
I mention that a key element is stacking colors in the ROY G BIV pattern. That is red, Orange, yellow, green, blue, Indigo, Violet. If you omit a color in the pattern, then stack the next color in line or the next color that is closest to the color that belongs in the order. I didn't use red or orange, but pink stood in for red, and I just moved to the next color after orange in my recipe. The pearl White should be 1st before your "red," and the brown black should be the color that meets the darkest in the stack when cut in half and restacked. That is why the pearl goes on top of the brown black.
In this example, if I wanted a more blue (or any other color) Abalone, I would omit a green and thin down the strongest green to a #5. I would then pick another blue and roll it to a #4, and proceed the same. I hope this info helps you in your learning journey. As always, if you have questions, comment on the video, and I'll get back to you. -Amy
A few of the products used in this tutorial can be found in my Amazon storefront. I am an affiliate.
Unfortunately, I've had the wave rubber stamp I used in this video for several years, and it isn't available on Amazon any longer, but I've picked out 2 other here that I would choose today.

Do you offer classes?
Hi, thank you for your question. I do not have classes in person at this time. I do have a few tutorials on youtube. www.youtube.com/@CaricoClay
could I do the same technique with liquid polymer clay?
Hi, I'm afraid not. Liquid Clay doesn't have the right surface required to make this work. You may have some success with a polyurethane coating, like verathane or brite tone.
Thank you for the tips and tricks! 🙏💗
@@Pamming-now Thank you for watching 🥰
The work is beautiful! I have a question: why you choose translusent backing? What is the benefit of it? Doesn't do another backing the same work?
I picked translucent because it's what I had that was light colored. I would've used white but didn't have it. Lighter backgrounds affect the brightness of the top layer. However, you can use any clay color.
Gorgeous! ❤
Thank you! 😊
This is very pretty! Love all the color variations in the pendant. Thanks!
@@debbiebarnette9715 Thank you for tuning in. ❤️
That was incredible! I can’t wait to try this technique out. Thank you for sharing 💗
You are welcome. Have fun with it. Thanks for watching. 🩷
Until I saw you do it, I would never have believed this would work and now I can't wait to try it. What magnificent results! Thanks so much for sharing.
You are welcome. There is so much that can be done with it. Thanks for tuning in.
Very negative comment. The bail looks very strong to me.
Thank you, Debbie. The bail is quite strong and has not failed. It's all in the material used and curing so that the plastic forms properly. I appreciate your support. ❤
You’re very welcome. I think the bail was one of the most unique things I have seen on UA-cam videos. Did you also the pendant? If so, do you have a video showing how you did it? Thanks!
Thank you 🎉 New subscriber here 🥰

How excellent to see something new and different! Great piece, I love it! I ordered repel gel but haven't ever used it. Does a little, go a long way?

Super, love mica shift, thank you for sharing..
Thank you too
Think this small bail will break very soon 😢
What makes you say that? Do you know what material it's made of, or what's your reasoning, please?
All of my bails have held up over time. I haven't had one fail. They are made with Cosclay in the base, giving them strength and flexibility.
Love it!! thanks so much for sharing your talents ❤
It's my pleasure
Thank you so much, loved the video and the pieces

Hi Amy, Jill here in the U.K. thanking you for a fab, creative, artistic and easy to follow video. Thanks for sharing. Question..at the beginning you have 2 pieces of translucent but unless I missed it…didn’t see you use it. Do you just add it to the bake before baking?
Hi Jill, I did use the 2nd piece, but if you blink, you may miss it. 😂 During the circle cutting part of the tutorial, I'm trying to place the cut-out circles where they are most opposite in color on the pattern. The last 2 large circles didn't have a home, so I grabbed the extra piece of translucent, placed a couple of veneer strips that I liked on it, and cut out the 2 remaining circles. It's at 14:21 in the video. Thanks for watching! ❤
Thank you for posting this great lesson. I love this a lot.
Thank you!
You are so welcome! I found the comment. Lol😅

Where can we find the template for cutting the pendants?
Hi thanks for the question. The template is from Cool Tools.
Amy, this is the first time that I've been fortunate enough to see your creations and WOW, are they strikingly beautiful 🎉 You make it look so easy but I'm sure that the first time I try to emulate them, it'll look like a 2 year old's attempt to follow the leader! Thank you for sharing these lovely pieces with us. I can't wait to try!!!!❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Hi again. I can't find the comment I just wrote to add to it. The 2 color slab AND the accent slab together don't even look as thick as just your one color slab. m Can you just come over to show me? I'll make the coffee.
This is super cool. I love it & it's not too complicated. I do have a question though. Your slabs look a lot thicker than mine do. colored clay-4th setting...accent clay-5th setting, right? I have an Atlas pasta machine that goes to 7 so maybe it's my machine making the slabs too thin. Any suggestions? thank you. I wish just ONE thing I make would turn out.
Hi, sorry to be so long in responding. I also have an atlas 150 which goes to 7. I rolled the colors on #4 and the translucent on #5. When you shave and add the strips to the translucent piece some slightly overlap but after burnishing with the wax paper and roller the veneer levels off probably to about a #4. I hope this helps. Just keep practicing. It will come together.
@@Caricoclay Thank you so much for replying. Your info is very helpful. Very kind of you to make the effort to explain.
Is there anyway I could get that page that you used for your pendant please? I love this technique!
Are you asking for the tutorial for the pendant itself? If so, here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/0aRlx0GtJL8/v-deo.htmlsi=BfkmZvoMEY5xio3Q
Devine ❤❤🙏🏽
Lovely slab. Where did you get the templates?
Template is from Cool Tools
Really neat. Way too complicated for me to even try.
..right now. Keep practicing. It's that blade work...
Once you start understanding the concepts of how certain techniques produce certain results, it all starts becoming intuitive! You'll get there!
You can do it!
extremely well made tutorial! love the camera work, edits, sound...oh-and actual project is great too!
Awww, thank you so much! I put a lot into editing. I find it quite satisfying. I research a lot of sound, too. I really enjoyed putting this one together. So glad you enjoyed it.❤
