The DCPG is a charity run by its members to encourage the love of clay, and advance skills and knowledge in potters. Members volunteered to host a community clay event at St Albans cathedral, enabling the public to take part in creating a huge clay model of the cathedral and many small gargoyle sculptures. We were visited by Royalty and Romans and many, many people young and old.

This short film explains the method of unloading a cooled woodfire kiln and what we learnt from doing this firing. This was our second meeting to fire the small wood kiln we had built. This time we were testing out high fire glaze recipes and ash glaze. We managed to get the kiln to above come 11, and all the high fire glazes we tested reached maturity. At the end of the film is a short account of the five glazes we tried out. This is the third firing at Chiltern Open Air Museum site with the DCPG Kiln Group. Today we did a raku firing, using mainly sawdust to create the carbon infusion, into white and turquoise raku crackle glaze. We also tried out OBVARA finish technique, where the red hot pots are plunged into a flour and yeast mixture and then rapidly cooled in water. It is hot, steamy and very exciting to watch ...
