Heartbreaking news in the last few minutes of this film. What a loss to the nation. I wish there could be a national craft museum which gave the public an exposition of handcrafting with leather, wood, metal, ceramics etcetera. There are so many old cotton mills that could be used. The will to sustain collections of excellence should not centre on money alone. We need to question our values.

Hi Dani. The finished product [sans Jackson Pollock splatting!] reminds me of the cover of the special item you made for me. I have aquired a tub of leather balm and treated our leather purchases from you with it. Itry not to make this many ink blots in my calligraphy ... but there have been days LOL! Eryk :-)

Hi Dani Best wishes from myself and my good lady to you both for a happy, prosperous, fulfilled New Year. This film has been wonderful, we wish the museum was nearer! I remember when so much was leather before plastics came to the fore and I had the loan of a leather trunk at school with some seascape carvings above the hinges and lock areas - maybe an old seafarer had it - there was the smell of an old seafarer inside LOL My early shoes had cardboard soles and my first leather ones were a luxury but then, suitcases were made of cardboard with sometimes a lincrusta lining. The cardboard was so cleverly made to look like leather! Those tools will have been made with such a better tool steel than we can get today - the paring knives will have kept a sharp edge for quite a time. We have enjoyed so much seeing you on Ep 2 of series 2 of Make it for Market [wrong title - sorry!] So good to see you make that bracelet. I had fun with a strip of vinyl making a Mystery Braid a few years ago. You provided really wonderful entertainment and education as did the calligrapher. Cutting back and forthe between you both was awkward but I watched the programme several times! As I am not a televiewer I never knew about this series. Thank you so much Dani for uploading this and also telling us about the TV programmes. :-)

First time you came across my feed. Great video. I Love Galen leather. You know if you don’t like the pen loop, you can leave the pen loop down with your weeks or anybook on top of it. I have done that with one of my books. Works great when not using the loop.! Blessings. 💖

Absolutely amazing to watch your precision and talent in this video Dani! The most that I would be capable of would be threading the needle!

I am immensely grateful to Dani for making what is now my beloved and treasured Travelling Scriptorium. I am fascinated to see the painstaking work and incredible skill invested in creating exactly what I had hoped for. The retaining straps work perfectly and at just the right tension. I was given so much choice as to colour and type of leather, straps, sewing thread and even the securing press studs. There is room for paper and blotting paper under the cover and the cover can be used as a writing support if needed as well as a tray for accoutrements. Dani has made items for me previously which fit into this scriptorial delight and I commend her work to anyone considering a commission for DD Practical. Thank you Dani for your wonderful work and for creating and uploading this video. I know it will inspire many people. Bravo DD Practical! Best wishes, Eryk

I'm a leftie overwriter. I have very little trouble in smudging fountain pen because since childhood i've always tilted the paper in the OPPOSITE direction from what you are showing. (starting with paper straight, then turn it COUNTER clockwise about 45 degrees. Combined with overwriting style, I can then write at a nice slant and write three or four lines before my hand makes contact with anything I've written. That's usually enough time to dry if i don't write overly fast.

GOD I wish I learned turning the paper 90 degrees when I was a kid. I spent my entire kid & teens years leaning my head over so far to the right (that it nearly looked like I was laying down at my desk lol) just so I could see what I was writing/drawing.

Hey Dani - glad you tried the color tip with the washi. This way the washi will actually show up in the layout. I'm not one who sticks to the timeline in my cousin; it's more of an account of what I did not when. Truly appreciate your sharing another colorful rainbow layout - instant cheer!

Watching the planning and diary system here reminds me of some work I was tasked with over half a century ago. There were six projects underway and I had to create a flow process chart board that had infinite variations for job segment completion. This was in London and W H Smith then had so much that I could choose from. Pegboards, elastic thread attached to different coloured pegs, note holders and so much else. I had a great time creating the progress board and I showed what stage all jobs had reached and the next stages - I was pleased with myself. Took it to the boss and put it on the easel. He told me that the work was exceptional and he understood the ideas but he could not use it! He had not told any of us that he was completely colour blind! Only black, white and grey was what he could percieve! I went back to my office dejected and then it occured to me that stripes, circles and different versions of 'monochrome tartan' might do the job. I mocked up a simulation and it was a success! These days this would all be done on a computer and printed as needed! We often assume people can see and hear the same as us ... that taught me a valuable lesson, and got me half a day off! :-) Eryk

Yet more possibilities! Including cutting a part circle to the edge of an enclosure to enable pulling something out but I assume that was thought about long before the order was put in :-) These cutters as well as those shown before look so well made and robust. I am wondering whether the use of a honing tool is occasionally required. Thinking personalised coasters or maybe short quotations or. ...... The limit is the imagination really! Great asset! It is a pleasure and a privilege to support DD Practical. A small business run by a deeply commited person who works hard and has a good grasp of where she stands and what is needed to maintain a progressive dynamic and when to invest at the best time in resources that will grow the business. No one can afford to rest on laurels and be a diva but I have met those. I get nice words from DD Practical and products that are more than nice. They are made with love and care. I am thinking of two layers of leather with the shapes cutting through both, meaning you could maybe create something like marquetry on (say) part of the fastening of a handbag handle between studs ... Eryk :-)

This is such a very fortunate position to be in and I am so happy for you. I look forward to my workshop being fit to work in and that part of my life being fulfilled. I have always had a workshop or in early years a workspace. When I was young many young people had hobbies and interests that they went to college to study and went into the world to contribute. Now fewer fathers and mothers rear children to see that they can create and contribute and that satisfaction never arrives. The plastic screen obsession and the shallowness of so many leads to so many giving up hope and settling for the minimum. DD Practical, in offering wonderful hand crafted products and a positive, inclusive attitude is a contributor on many levels, we need so much more of what you offer in many spheres of life. May your Best Life beam out and encourage in every way - DD Practical certainly encourages me! Eryk :-)

Splendid idea for the embossed leather! I am wondering if you could emboss your own blank leather wet using texture plates? The leaves could make a lovely mandala broach or scarf pin maybe? Eryk :-)

We are evolving and adapting as a society and individually every day in so many ways. Macro and micro. Macro is this platform which brings me your channel and also 11th century binding and lettering but also teaches me how to cope with computer op systems. Macro change is the loss of Kiwi shoe polish because people are wearing fewer leather shoes which influences the leather production industry. Micro is hearing the latest 'in' words and phrases and learning their meaning. In my long life the concept of a job for life has disappeared and replaced by searching for funding or a five year plan rather than working towards an indefinite objective. We adapt or depreciate and become Tolpuddle Martyrs. I have to say there is more than a modicum of Tolpuddle in me! A lake rather than a puddle :-) Eryk

I was transfixed by this film Dani. I have arthritic problems and I use a similar knife to the one you have been using and with similar difficulties. The L'indispensible looks so much better. When you next buy snap off blades may I commend the black blades as sold by Crown Decorator shops. They are more expensive but far sharper. I may make a fimo handle that fits around my slim knife, moulded to my personal grip before firing. As I cut paper or card with mine it protrudes less and 'wobbles' less. All that said, the new knife is a beautiful instrument. Happy New Sun to you both for Spring Equinox. :-) Eryk
