I’m a Chinese-American singer, composer, writer, & photographer. I specialize in improvisational & impressionistic interpretation of Chinese ethnic musical traditions, & modernist portrayals of literati (classical scholars) meditative & Wu (Chinese shamanism) musics inspired by indigenous aesthetics. My signature is a self-created “language” i.e. non-lexical vocables as lyrics, which accompany improvised melodies; I’ve developed this approach for 10 years because I believe it helps me to use the voice as an instrument, & connect most authentically with musicians from different cultures without the barriers of linguistic lyrics & literal meanings.
As a field researcher on minority cultures & a translator of Chinese mythology and folklore, I love to channel my knowledge & cultural sensibilities into creating & performing music & storytelling works, which have been featured by Forbes, Vogue China, BBC Arabic, among others.

Rui Fu『 The Lament』with the 2,400 year-old instrument Bianzhong from ancient China
Improvised performance by Rui Fu, December 2020.
www.ruifu.co | @ruifu.co
.inspiration.
This piece pays tribute to Qu Yuan's "The Lament" - an ancient Chinese poem from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC). Scholars such as Huang Xiaodan theorize that the poet, a historian and a guardian of his nation’s spiritual traditions, expressed nostalgia and lament as his civilization transitioned from the Era of Mythology into the Age of Reason.

Rui Fu『 Taiyi 』Ancient Music solo performance @Strathmore
Переглядів 10 тис.3 роки тому
Improvised performance at the Music Center at Strathmore. A part of the Artist-in-Residency's Fresh "AIR" concert, Nov. 2020. www.ruifu.co | @ruifu.co .inspiration. The concept of "Taiyi" originates from numerous clues about the Lord of the Sky found in ancient Chinese literature. This improvised piece is a specific reference to the first poem that opens the "Songs of Chu" - also known as the "...
Bravo bravisimo 😊🇻🇪
You and your music are absolutely beautiful and transcending. As a fellow Chinese, I can't help but feel pride that you're doing such a wonderful job of combining and spreading Chinese musical elements, harmony, tradition and culture. Btw, I was so mesmerized by the 2 dome shaped handheld bells in the beginning of the video, do you mind sharing where you acquired them from? Thank you!

Very beautiful song, bells, and performance. I subscribed to listen to these songs, whenever l feel like it. I love Chinese history, and China’s development to a super powerhouse economically. Chinese culture, and ancient instruments are superb. Soulful interpretation by Rui Fu - l can listen to it endlessly till l fall asleep, the lament is like a lullaby to me. Thank you. Greetings from Australia 2.08.2024 ❤
🌿🤍🌿 immortal
Grazie per la tua bellissima voce......il suono di queste campane magiche💛🧡💛💛💛
wow... my heart is healing.
Not like anything else.
Grazie per la tua energia🥰🥰
I have been listening to you everyday for past 2 years. Please don't stop uploading here. ❤❤
Thank you. So beautiful.
Absolutely fantastic! An angelic voice, with enormous strength! A wonderful gift!
This is beautiful! I like listening to explorations of the voice as an instrument not binded to words. One of the earliest persons who explored this was Demetrio Stratos. That said, I would also love to learn the original words of the prayer to the sky. My great grandmother had these daily rituals, prayers to the sky, sun, moon, in Hokkien, but the tradition was not passed down as my grandparents became Buddhists. I don't know anyone here in Sarawak who knows about it...
thanks very much for your comment! Your great grandmother's rituals sound beautiful, I wish we know more details about those ancient rites too, but unfortunately these things especially sound are not easily preserved. The original Taiyi poem also does not contain the words of the prayer but simply describes the ritual itself. Hope to share more inspirations with you in the future & sending blessings to you in lovely Sarawak - I've been there! :)
Kong Audio did an amazing job there, as well as everyone involved in performing and producing this song! I’ve never heard anything like this! I really like bianzhong music.
Yes Kong Audio is amazing! Thanks for your comment and your resonance :) Happy New Year soon🎉
@@RuiFu Thank you, the same to you! 😊
Wonderful ❤. And to think of how Mao tried to obliterate ancient Chinese culture 😮
Such a beautiful voice
BAM! Right to the soul! Thank you, Rui Fu! 🙏
Buona sera Maestra. La ringrazio per la superlativa condivisione🙏. Complimenti per il suo operato. PS: Mi ha sempre affascinato la cultura antica cinese:) Spero ci saranno altri video al riguardo. Saluti dall Italia🙋♂️🇮🇹
So beautiful ❤︎
China?????
yep!
Un giorno...in punto di morte...vorrei essere accompagnato da questo magico canto...
When Qu Yuan sang his Lament, he was probably already an exile, bianzhong might be too much, probably qin was more likely for an exile.
Hi 光宇, thank you for your comment & insight! I appreciate your interpretation of the poem - you're right, there are many qin pieces related to the Lament and that is probably the most common musical interpretation of the ancient poem. I believe, however, there can be different ways to tell the same timeless story from new contexts, instead of always literally illustrating the sentiment from the poet's point of view using the qin, which is traditionally only accessible to male literatis. I think of it as an ancient, maybe even later in time, prayer by the ceremonial shamans who might have honored the spiritual pursuits and lamented the fate of someone like Qu Yuan. I hope this makes sense and invites in different angles of storytelling than the traditional route. :)
@@RuiFu Oh my! You replied my silly thoughts. If I was a viking, then I would say by Odin's whiskers, your wisdom enlightened me like sunstone; if I was an alien spaceship AI, then I would say your kind reply warms my fusion core; if I was my neighbor cat Tom the Sneaky, then I would say something sweet in tail language; if I was my phone, then I would say reading your reply recharges my battery. As to me, a silly mortal two-legged, I couldn't agree with you more. May Goddess Muse smile upon you.
@@jumpingwolf hahahhahahah you're too funny!! thank you for your kind response and for sharing your thoughts in the first place. Sending you best wishes & looking forward to hearing your thoughts in the future as well! Take care!
